The rain in training over Memphis, which is making flooding SO MUCH WORSE! Based on the flood maps that were released yesterday, looks like I may be trapped in Millington for a few days (and I have final exams with mandatory attendence this week). I'm keeping the local news on for the latest updates, but it is so sad that so many people are getting flooded with no insurance to cover their loses. I hope you are ok where you are located BC. I wish their was a flood watch thread on the Fragiel Earth forum. I bet there are more Memphis members here on ATS that have a lot to report.
Thought it would be fun this morning to tromp through a couple of stats about how this month has gone, since this has been a rip-snortin' doozy...screaming metals, collapsing banks and a cratering US Dollar. Makes it easy for a financial columnist to write on mornings like this; there is no shortage of subject matter. But the "one trillion pound question" in New Madrid does grab our immediate attention. We're on high alert for a major quake.
Where and When Do They Form?
Hurricanes do an important job for the Earth. They help move heat from warm tropical places to the cooler temperate zone. To do this, they typically form between 5 to 15 degrees latitude north and south of the equator. Then, they thunder across the warm oceans of the world such as the Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and the Western Pacific Ocean (where they are called typhoons), up to higher latitudes.
Hurricanes happen when the oceans have been warmed during summer months. In the North Atlantic, hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30, but most hurricanes happen during the fall.
Proxy records based on paleotempestological research have revealed that major hurricane activity along the Gulf of Mexico coast varies on timescales of centuries to millennia. Few major hurricanes struck the Gulf coast during 3000–1400 BC and again during the most recent millennium. These quiescent intervals were separated by a hyperactive period during 1400 BC and 1000 AD, when the Gulf coast was struck frequently by catastrophic hurricanes and their landfall probabilities increased by 3–5 times. This millennial-scale variability has been attributed to long-term shifts in the position of the Azores High, which may also be linked to changes in the strength of the North Atlantic Oscillation.

Hurricanes are the most awesome, violent storms on Earth. People call these storms by other names, such as typhoons or cyclones, depending on where they occur. The scientific term for all these storms is tropical cyclone. Only tropical cyclones that form over the Atlantic Ocean or eastern Pacific Ocean are called "hurricanes."
HAARP was highly active in the weeks before Katrina, during, and a short time after. The correlation is therefore not complete. If HAARP were inactive during that time, then it could be proven that it had absolutely nothing to do with Katrina, but since it was indeed active, a possible link still remains.
