senator has his way. Republican Lee Bright introduced legislation that would back the creation of such a currency, because, “If folks lose faith in the dollar, we need to have some kind of backup,” he tells the Spartanburg Herald-Journal. His resolution calls for a study on the subject, and argues that a state currency could protect South Carolina if the strained Fed breaks down.

and so it begins.... and yesthis is a real story

I'm sure many smug MSM and Northern folks will make fun of this guy, but, assuming this currency is specie-backed, this would be a reeeeeaaaalllly intelligent move on SC's behalf. Louisiana needs to begin discussion on preparedness for national economic collapse (Control of Mississippi River, largest port system on the globe, control of its own oil revenue, etc...). Will probably go nowhere as most state governments are as controlled by private interests as much as the federal gov't, but one can contemplate... Good for him.

This is so important. People must realize we need a non fiat currency. Assuming the government doesn't run it over.

Virginia has such a proposal in committee in their state legislature. Did so about one month ago...

My concern is that you are starting to have reasonably rational and intelligent men and women in positions of power considering scenarios that have been hot topics for quite some time here at ATS.

Just howclose are we to an actual dollar collapse?

It would seem that SC is not the only one to have this issue on the table for consideration these days.

Virginia State Currency

Montana (2009)

So this is not really a new topic when it comes to states and states rights when it butts heads with the Fed Reserve. Personally I think its a good thing that some states are taking the initiative to have alternate means of currency for their citizens in the eventuallity the dollar falls. It's another reason for us all to have small reserves of gold and silver just in case. Just sayin.

The federal government along with the federal reserve would never allow a state to create, produce and operate it's own currency. The ammount of control lost would be far too much for them to handle. Also the trouble for the state with trade laws, getting itself recognized, etc..

The fiat currency system that is in place now is the only thing that provides a guaranteed hold over the residents of the United States.

As far as a economical collapse? The US is "too big to fail" and they won't ever allow the economy to go into complete collapse without it being the will of the people. Which it won't ever be.

The doomsdayers will say that we are all on the verge, but this system is 100 years strong in 2014-ish and won't be going away anytime soon.
