83 ft/sec (57 mph). The article you cite from discovery is a terrible summary of the experiment. Helmholtz was a genius and calculated this number
in the 1800s and has since been proven he was very close with current technology. He discovered more important scientific knowledge than you even
know about. Helmholtz discovered conservation of energy, the trichromatic theory of vision, the blindspot of the eye and much more. He was a genius
and anyone who denies this is ignorant. His experiment was genius in discovering how fast nerve impulses travel. Don't listen to the discovery
article; it contains very little facts. I'm a psychology major and just learned all about helmholtz in a senior level class on the history of
psychology.
