Incoming Earthbound CME!

On Feb. 13th at 1738 UT, sunspot 1158 unleashed the strongest solar flare of the year so far, an M6.6-category blast. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded an intense flash of extreme ultraviolet radiation.

Preliminary coronagraph data from STEREO-A and SOHO agree that the explosion produced a fast but not particularly bright coronal mass ejection (CME). The cloud will likely hit Earth's magnetic field on or about Feb. 15th. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.

Not much to say really, an M6.6 blast created by a solar flare and a CME is on the way.
Should be interesting to see just how far south the Aurora's can be seen.

Wonder if it makes it down South??.... Guess we have to wait and watch.

That one seems to be referring to Sunspot 1157 which is in a totally different place on the Sun as 1158 which caused this event.
I suppose they could of got it mixed up though but they did say Northern hemisphere and only seem to be guessing, although it's hard to tell you need a password to look at the other one and to get a password you need to hand over some cash.

Thanks pazcat. Important heads-up, especially given that geomagnetic disturbances can cause heart attacks and strokes (and so, presumably, other health problems too).
