Um, it was actually the black man who made the black man his slave. I see you should brush up on your history a bit. Should blacks hate each other because their ancestors were slave owners as well?

That doesn't even compare with the treatment the white man showed the blacks, or any other culture for that matter

"Answer for the crimes of his ancestors?" They weren't crimes, it was perfectly legal to own a slave.

And because it's not a crime in the eyes of the lawmakers it makes it right does it?

People like you are the reason these "pride" months all exist at all. You can't put the #ing past behind you and move on. I will not be ashamed of the past of my ancestors, sorry. Because unlike you, I realize that without the past, this present wouldn't exist.

Listen closely pal, the past is behind me, but I still look at the mistakes my ancestors made so I don't repeat them, and as such I do realise without that past this present wouldn't exist, no need to swear like a little child.

The mistakes they made built the bridge to this future.

How about a human history month, where everyone can acknowledge that where we are today, wouldn't have been possible without the events that occurred in the past. Stop separating # by skin color. It's primitive thinking, and really, it's getting tiresome.

Because our ancestors seperated stuff by skin colour and thats why it happened, and those history months are the white man admitting they made a mistake, and trying to show the world we are better now, oh and you really need to wash your mouth out with soap, swearing is the lowest form of communication.

I believe there should be a month set aside for the race of people under 10 and another for those under 20. It's discouraging that the seperate races of mothers and fathers only get a day per year each, yet kids get zip.

The title of the thread was not the answer, but it is a fair question. I don't agree with having any race history month, but im sure abolishing any of them would have the same negative effects as it would to add white history month. I was just trying to figure out how leaving out 'white' became politically correct

We celebrate black history month to acknowledge the struggle black people as a race have gone through and still go through because of the color of their skin. It is a time to reflect on that struggle and what we as Americans can do to improve this situation. We do not need a "White History Month"! Have a compassionate clue man.

So you don't agree with Morgan Freeman. Other that the phrase Black History how do you see the function? I don't know how to phrase this, but if there was a plan to abolish racism, racial history months would be your answer ?

No I do not agree. This is a part of American history, and it still a part of American culture today. The OP asked "When is White History Month?" There is no need for a White History Month, but that doesnt mean we dont need a Black History Month. Think about your time in school --- when was the impact of Black Americans studied? - Never. Every one should study the impact. It is good and right to acknowledge what has happened in the past in order to change the future.

While the OP points out the Hypocrisy of the whole system, there will be no change.
It is political correctness at its worst.

I think hanging on the past is a cop out for more race based special treatment for pandering bias agendas and free handouts. In todays times modern slaves are found in the US, and guess what, they are blacks, in the US that have black african slaves. I remember Oprah did an expose on this. The "mistreatment" of blacks, was true, but why do the black Africans get a free ride, because they are not whitey? And look at the present, the vast majority of interracial crimes have a white victim and a black attacker. This hanging on the past is just fuel to keep the black racists all riled up, and give the pandering liberal socialist government people to have some agenda to pander for, just to keep people divided and able to play the victim card the owed card, soon we'll have comemerative stamps for black history month with Lil' Wayne on them. This racial condenscending pandering is all a plot of the government, and too many people, blacks(not all) and white leftists wanna howl about it, so they can feel like a victim or on some mission against "evil"(honky). It's sick how far this nation has fallen.

Really? I was in school before black history month was implemented. Prior to 1976, I had already heard of Harriet Tubman, George Washington Carver, Daniel Hale Williams, Charles Drew, Robert H. Lawrence, Jr., Sgt. William H. Carney and many others. I knew who the Buffalo Troopers were and how they actually got their names. If anything, I would say that BHM has actually reduced African American historical contributions to mere footnote status.

Why can't there be a Mixed Color Month? You know, so all us of 'mixed breeds' can feel good about ourselves too.

Racists are funny. They're so 15th century... all Euro-centric and bible-thumping good little holier-than-thou types.

I think this is exactly why we are having so many problems today, everyone has to have their special day, culture, etc. What happened to philosophies like being an American or Brit for example? People used to be happy with being grouped together with a common term to explain who they are. Now everone has to be special, especially any groups that consider themselves a minority. This cultuaral diversity idea I think has gone too far and is actually driving us apart rather than bringing us together. The more special treatments, days, months a group of people recieve through trying to be politically correct the farther they seperate themselves as an independent people/culture. I think it is time that we all adopt and speak the traditions and languages of the lands we live in or migrate to and start to consider ourselves Americans, british, Russian, French, what have you and do away with terms such as Muslim-American, Latino-American, African-American . . . you get the idea. Just my tow-cents.

Masqua, question, save me googling, are pure whites the blonde hair, blue eye types and us dark haired critters the one who have at least one black ancestor? (ignoring the we were all black and evolved from Africa theory)

I'd be only guessing, but my impression is that there is no 'pure white' except those who suffer from albinism.

Wow, after all of the other points made, here goes.

Perhaps Black History Month should not exist. Perhaps it is overstepping bounds, because at the end of the day, what is "Black"?

In order to understand what "Black" might be, we must examine what it is not: "White."

What is "White"? For some strange reason, a whole gaggle of European peoples who otherwise had despised each other or at best lived weary of intermingling and intermarrying with each other, are all of a sudden plopped down in a new continent (two or three actually) and find themselves closer based on the simplest thing known as skin color.

However, skin color was never good enough back in Europe, just as it is not good enough in East Asia or Africa. The US is not purely made of any one group, but as the immigrant generations continue through time, more and more Italians and Poles and Irish and Germans and Spanish and French and Scottish and Swedes are all shacking up. But that is not "white".

"White", like anything, only exists in opposition. It can only be explained by first explaining what it is not. Without "Black" there would be no "white" - as could be seen in Europe prior to and concurrent with European colonialism.

White is not an "ethnic" group. Black is. Black American, that is. "Black" as a people designator is ridiculous, because all ethnic groups belonging to what we might call "Black" (by virtue of skin color alone) are many, just as the Europeans are many.

But when a school says it's "Black History Month", we have to remember that they are specifically referring to "Black Americans".

Black Americans are made up of mostly West African heritage, some Mozambican and Angolan mixed in, with a large portion of European ancestry and Native American groups contributing to their lineage as well. Their culture reflects the syncretism, so does the way they speak. No word for "is" in Black American English reflects no word for "is" in West African languages, also mirrored by no word for "is" in Haitian Creole. And to defend the fact that there is no word for "is", Japanese, Russian, Arabic and Hebrew also do not have a word for "is".

(**By word for "is" I am talking about the "copula", where A = B: "That is my car. She is American. The concept is still existent in these languages, just explained through other means than the simple word "is".)

The descendants of all these different ethnicities that were mixed by force, rape, coercion or free will are what we call "Black" in the US. They are not the same as Black Africans (Sub-Saharan Africans) or the various African-descendant groups on the various Caribbean Islands. They are also not the same as Black Brazilians, Colombians or Venezuelans. By virtue of European colonialism and Slavery, however, the Black peoples of the Americas do have similarities that can be traced back to West African cultures, religions and languages.

In short, the reason there is no White History Month is because there is no such thing as "White" in the sense that you mean. There is no such thing as "Black" in the term "Black History Month" except in how it refers to the history and lineage of the Black peoples of North America as a less-than-ethnically-homogeneous group that exists somewhere on a continuum of ethnic and sociolinguistic heritage.

True, and whether a "family story" based on a grandiose idea of Native American mysticism, or because it's really the case, I keep meeting more and more people we here in the US call "white" who tell me they have Native American ancestry. I, too, have been told that there is Native American ancestry on my maternal grandmother's side.

It's hard to keep track of, but I would guess that there is a large portion of Americans who have lineage that predates the 1890s and forward immigration waves and that that heritage includes Native American ethnicity of one tribe or another. The mix is small and has been diluted by the European immigrant period. But, if other nations in the Western Hemisphere are to be held up as examples, it certainly seems plausible that the "whitening" effect of European immigration in the late 19th and early-mid 20th centuries was either purposeful or coincidental to labor needs through the industrialization and westward expansions.

I think the fact that most "white" Americans think they really are pure "white" is a national myth and one that could use to be disproved.

So now you speak for all schools across America just because you went to a really bad one that doesn't teach that? I learned about that stuff in school.....

While I may be risking sounding like a bigot, I can't help but notice that events like this are what breed racism. to even acknowledge the separation seems to be racist.

Human history is human history. I don't seem to be alone on this. If you google white history month the question seems to get asked a lot. And I am surprised to hear so many views from that search that thinks that ALL white people have had a comfortable history surrounded by servants and silk. that is BS!!

My age group never did anything to offend other races, we embraced it as far as i can tell. *SNIP* Same goes with sushi, that stuff isn't even a proper meal from what i was taught about food groups, but i supported it. I hate currie, but i will still suffer a plate of butter chicken cause that *SNIP* is good.

Why do i see so many young people from other races act like they need to be different from white people? What do white people DO that is so white? Modernized? that is white? well there were times that wasn't so, so i would say we have just as much to celebrate but are too scared to because it might offend other races

With that said: I can assure you I celebrate this every day - But as a collective whole Nada... Anyone can judge what I say and take this out of context. MO is MO as I have found that this is many others MO without reading into it - Just my 2cents

It still makes a point. Answer my question. Should blacks hate their own skin color because they owned slaves as well? Are you saying that black slave owners did not beat their black slaves? Because I can counter that easily. I can also show you examples of "humane" white slave owners. It wasn't all based on race like your skewed view of history makes you believe. It all depended on the individual slave owner, and what their personality was like. Now their REASONS for beatings may have been different, but it still doesn't change the fact that black slave owners treated their slaves inhumanely at times as well.

And because it's not a crime in the eyes of the lawmakers it makes it right does it?

And the same could be said for you. Because it's not right in your eyes, it makes it not right to everyone else? I'm not saying I agree with the treatment, just that your view is entirely subjective, and there is no grounds for you to try to make a point on that.

The definition of the word "crime" is an act punishable by law. Look it up, please. It was not a crime, like you stated.

Listen closely pal, the past is behind me, but I still look at the mistakes my ancestors made so I don't repeat them, and as such I do realise without that past this present wouldn't exist, no need to swear like a little child.

Don't try and tell me how to speak. This is against the point, and all you're doing is grasping at straws. Please stay on topic.

Now, no, the past is not behind you. If it was, you wouldn't still be separating everything by skin color and finding it necessary to have a history month based on the skin color of individuals. You are living in the past.

Because our ancestors seperated stuff by skin colour and thats why it happened, and those history months are the white man admitting they made a mistake, and trying to show the world we are better now,

Once again, prime example of living in the past. We can show that we're better now by abolishing anything involving the separation by skin color, and acting as a HUMAN race.

oh and you really need to wash your mouth out with soap, swearing is the lowest form of communication.

Sorry my speech offends you. The lowest form of communication is grasping at straws that have nothing to do with the topic being discussed. Once again, please stay on topic.

Please be more original next time. I don't need someone over the internet telling me how to speak.
