Why do UFO's keep their lights on?

Ive wondered about this as well. I feel probably 90% of lights in the sky are man made objects. The military is atleast 50+ years ahead of technology the general public is aware of.

I don't see the lights being a by product of propulsion. In that case the lights would be brighter upon acceleration. They obviously aren't used to see ahead of the craft. Being able to navigate thru space to our planet and be worried about running into an airplane once here is laughable.

Perhaps an energy field is generated around the object that's only visible at night.

I'd actually go 99% plus of the 'lights in the sky' type UFO reports are man made. Im yet to be convinced that propulsion is a good explanation.
