They're not going to force you. That's the point, and that's the point of the gold star example. If you choose not to pay for healthcare, you don't have healthcare, and there are consequences. Pretty much the status quo now if you choose to view having to pay with either your taxes and/or the cost of healthcare in general for other people now as "forced." Because you do pay one way or another. What some people are resisting based on...whatever...is simply so short-sighted. Does the current plan have problems? Yes. But the old "plan" (or non-plan) had worse ones.

Yes, bad comparison. Though I agree there are potential consequences for not, it's not a requirement and most of the insurance plans are a fixed cost, typically equivalent to the wholesale cost of a comparable laptop or the approximate cost of refurbishing the broken one. Notice laptop insurance plans are usually of a fixed amount corresponding to a term, often around $49 US per year and typically do not exceed 3 years in term. No one suggests wearing a gold star for not insuring your laptop, nor any other object for that matter, even half-jokingly.

They can't "force you" to get car insurance either, but try having a wreck and see what happens....

This "Obamacare" thing is no comparison to car insurance either as, actually, various states do force car insurance if you own a vehicle. However, I can agree with that because you also have the option of not owning a vehicle thus not having to carry insurance. But this national health care thing I can't agree with: I cannot choose to not have a body nor can I choose not to insure it.

Maybe I should clarify the above: I can choose to not participate but does the government respect my freedom of choice in the matter?

...and then in accordance with US occupation policy we can pay for thier coverage ourselves after we invade...and pretty soon we will be the only country on the globe without Universal healthcare while providing it via our tax dollars to the rest of the world.

I really despair how easily people are hustled by politicians to believe anything that threatens a political party's pocket book industry is a SOCIALIST TAKEOVER. The willingness of millions of folks to suspend critical thinking when told to is just astonishing.

It is like Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh et al. simply push the "hysteria" button and one half the country starts shouting without understanding why.

Doctors deserve to be paid for their years at medical school; their hard work getting through it; their long and difficult hours working. Hospitals deserve to get paid for providing a service. So do the drug companies. They deserve to pay their people for their hard work at finding new medicines. Everyone deserves to get paid for their work.

Have you actually looked at your insurance policy? Any big operation or treatment and they are going to dump you like a week old tuna. They want you to pay three times more in premiums that you use in services. If the care you need equals what you are paying, the insurance 'will' find your application and tell you that you are dropped because you didn't spell something right or misplaced a comma or somethng completely irrelavent to the matter at hand.

The health care in this country doesn't care if you are healthy they just want the money.

Hey your welcome to come to Canada, since it's coming to elections time there starting to revamp away from the ideas that America currently has with police and jails and looking at American blogs from officers and corrections etc... and our current own system. We might follow the same system when it comes to heath care. Were currently moving away from repression of people in a fundamental aspect. Getting off that train derailment now. So good for us

No it's not "pretty much like that now" because there are millions of americans who cannot get coverage at all so they are forced into the position of paying unreasonable rates because the insurance industry banks on profit by, in part, rationing coverage. Another part of it is how expensive it is for some families.

I agree this healthcare bill is a mess, but so is this current healthcare system. Now people who choose not be coverage despite their ability to, well then I agree with you. I do believe though that you painted the healthcare issue black and white, and it is not that simple of an issue.

In case you didn't know... that's sorta the way it is now.
No insurance emergency @ hospital; billed full price +30% for everything.
No insurance Doctor office (or anywhere) visit; charged 30% above what's billed to BlueCross BlueShield, note: that's $ amt BILLED, not $ amt paid, Cash for new patients, terms for patients who will pay in two or three payments and don't run over 2-300 dollars. $70 for Dr office visit.
The +30% is to make the uninsured pay for the discount given to the insured. Isn't that just peachy?

I broke my ankle last year, lost insurance two months before. Pretty bad break- 2hr surgery w/titanium strap and pin... $21,000 O.R., $1750 E.R., $2200 surgeon, $950 total from seven other peripheraly involved Dr, labs etc... $25,900!
These bills will never go away. I won't be able to buy a house, for example, unless amount to pay all debts on credit reports are added to mortage and paid in full to the various creditors... just for example.
If I was 25yo, instead of 62yo, this would be a real problem for years to come. At $200 a month it would take 10 years to pay. They won't wait that long, so all will be sold to 10 different collection agencies for half, and I'll be hounded for full amount by them till death.
So I think the consequences for no insurance, no matter the reason, are already quite daunting... If you've always had coverage, you probably aren't aware of these facts.
Since I already have house and most stuff paid for... I'll not be too worried 'bout this.
But Hey! Life is great. I'm lucky to have this $$$$ problem instead of living in Europe, Asia or the African continent, where I probably would've lost foot a ft. above my ankle.
