And now the official tourist industry saving retraction

Presently, there are no signs of an imminent volcanic eruption in Iceland. The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) did not issue a warning last weekend in connection with increased seismicity beneath the Vatnajökull ice-cap. If signs of an eruption were apparent, IMO would issue a warning immediately.

Appeared today but dated 9th? Mm. Written by a "specialist"? Mm, gotta love that remark.

Great find there.

There is one passage there that i would like to quote

He explained the Icelandic Met Office had on Sunday warned of the increased risk of a eruption in north-west side of Vatnajökulll glacier due to the high earthquake activity in the area, and added: 'It is clear that only time is going to tell us if there is going to be a eruption in this area soon or not.' Read more: www.dailymail.co.uk...

Here we have them quoting him saying that the met office warned us, and then there´s the "forced" statements telling us that they did no such thing.

I don't think there was any pressure at all?

But if you were misquoted by the media to suggest you supported their latest doomster scare story, wouldn't you want to put the record straight? That is all that has happened here.

No conspiracy. But it does show how incompetent and untrustworthy the British media - never assume anything you read is correct!

Im not even sure why you keep on arguing about this , we have shown you the links to there original statements, i have explained who said what and when with the links to there statements. Now they get persons who had nothing to do with the original statement come and tell other country´s that everything is allright, of course he clarified he was not predicting end days as the British media put it.

You say, "never assume anything you read is correct!" yet you disregard every fact we have put on this thread and keep assuming everything you have read is correct. Im just simply not understanding the logic behind that

I'm arguing because some have implied a conspiracy when the facts clearly show that this was a simple case of the British media mistranslating a mundane report and (not unusually) creating a nonsense scare story as a consequence.

Do you disagree, and if so why?

Are you suggesting that I am wrong and that the volcano will erupt in the near future causing massive disruption? If so, why?

Essan my friend, you seem to be too focused on the British newspaper scaremongering. If you read this thread over again you will notice there is no conspiring that there is a end of days eruption about to happen. Puterman clearly states the facts about this volcano system while also referring to the mantle plume below it and refers you towards the links.

Here´s a link to the post about who said what Page 2
Páll Einarson clearified for the British media that he was not talking about a end of days eruption. But rather as Páll and Jón Frímann said there is reason for consern. While Sigurlaug Hjaltadóttir gave it a time frame of less then a year. You can go through the thread and look at the Original Statements made by these people, and you will notice not one of these statements say what the British media implied at the start. (End of days)

Páll Einarson explained the Icelandic Met Office had on Sunday warned of the increased risk of a eruption in north-west side of Vatnajökulll glacier due to the high earthquake activity in the area, and added: 'It is clear that only time is going to tell us if there is going to be a eruption in this area soon or not.

This is not a big country, the 2 main revenues in this country is fish and the travel industry.

Marketing of tourism: Inspired by Iceland Due to ash fall from the eruption of the eruption and problems in international air transport supporting a serious situation in Iceland's tourism industry. Bring tourists to the country dropped by 22% in April and will present trend could reduce the number of foreign tourists more than 100 thousand this year compared to last year. This would entail Many billion reduction in revenues compared with the estimates have expected, says a press release from the Ministry of Industry. In order to address this unprecedented situation has Industry in collaboration with Icelandair, Reykjavik, Iceland Express, the Trade and Travel Industry Association (about 70 companies) decided to launch a sharp targeting of Marketing May to mid July 2010. The market has offices landshlutanna also made campaign team. Contribution to the initiative amounts to a total of $ 700 billion. kr. Executive Committee with representatives of these parties control effort.

The aim of the strategy are: reduce the negative impact on a solid market that has long term building strengthen the image of Iceland and create opportunities from the review that the country has been abroad promote the country as a whole operate throughout the country benefit from the encourage booking as soon as possible will minimize damage to existing tourist season.

State department agency
The Icelandic Travel assosiation industry

As you can see we spent a whole bunch of money (3,7 billion pounds) on advertising the country last year and last month they were finally seing it pay off as the travel industry was reporting a 10% increse. There is not a chance that they would be allowing it all to go to waste because of a statement made by some geoligist and a warning from the IMO.

Are you suggesting that I am wrong and that the volcano will erupt in the near future causing massive disruption? If so, why?

I am suggesting that the conspiracy factor is incorrect on your behalf, but i presume that is because lack of information in this matter. But im pretty sure i have stated my case well enough for you to see it clearly.

Whether the volcano will erupt any time soon is of course something we can not predict, but i am going to take Sigurlaug Hjaltadóttirs word for it and assume we might see an eruption within a year. Now whether it will cause a massive eruption we do not know. But it sertenly has the potential to do so as the OP stated.

At this moment there are 6 Volcano´s overdue for a eruption of some sort here in Iceland and 2 more have been given a timeframe within 2 years. And even a non violent eruption such as Eyjafjalljökull last summer had the natural hazard department in a readyness that i still do not understand.

Hope this post helps clearify things for you Essan.
