I drink alot of diet soda drinks daily and have done for years, I've always known they are not healthy and I have heard of aspartame before, but never really knew to much about it..
After reading this thread and some of the posts, I'll never put that stuff into my body again..
Thanks to op for you story and everyone who made damming comments on this chemical, you have all saved at least one person (me) from poisoning themselves daily..

For the last few years, I noticed the occasional sharp stomach cramps every once in awhile. It took me a few years to connect my chewing gum to rot gut cramps.
Been chewing gum most of my life.
Then I heard of the aspartame/poisoning.
Shocked, not surprised.
Went on a mission to find gum without aspartame.
Impossible, so far.
If anyone knows of gum that is aspartame free, please post.
Still want to chew gum.
Have limited myself to 1/3 piece at a time, and much less often.
It still, occasionally gives me a cramp or 2, but my stomach is feeling so much more relaxed since I learned of another corporate lie.

I brought this up in a different thread and could not believe that there were actually people debating this fact with me! ASPARTAME IS POISON
Yeah, that's because 90% of those people have no idea what they're talking about. If you seriously think aspartame isn't poison, just drink it up little sheeple - we're better off without you.

I found out that there are certain sugar free candies and chewing gum that causes cardiac arrhythmia.... For years I have had a very low pulse rate and lower than normal blood pressure and test at a VA hospital determined that I had at sometime had a heart attack based on scar tissue on my heart... I spent 6 days in ICU after wearing a holter monitor for 24 hours during which I purchased sugarless chewing gum and went to town chewing away in an effort to curb my desire for a cigarette.... The statin drugs I was being given to lower my cholesterol caused cardiac mitral valve prolapse.. Between symptoms caused by those two things, I was diagnosed by one doctor of having congestive heart failure... I was confused suffered all kinds of joint pain, couldn't sleep and thought that I had to be dying... I finally began to figure out what was causing me to feel so bad and have so many scary symptoms because of the issues I was having with my memory I forgot to call for refills on the medication I was taking and ran out of them on a few occasions and once when a prescription had lapsed and wasn't refilled I went with out the statins long enough that a started feeling and thinking better... My heart rate blood pressure and other cardiac issues are gone but sugar free products will cause them to start again almost immediately and my cholesterol and triglycerides are still messed up but no worse thanks to food supplements I get over the counter at Walgreen's or Sam's club.

Donald Rumsfield, evil ubermeister of the Reagan administration gave us aspartame to begin with. supposedly, bush's "pretzel-choking incident" was actually aspertame overdose. he and cheney supposedly sucked-down 20 diet cokes a day.

We can but hope, about the only way we'll get the b******S is if they administer the poison to themselves, I wana see bush shake like he's dancing to his own beat all the time.

I totally agree with the whole Aspartame = poison stance.
For years i was addicted to diet diet soda. Subsequently I suffered from severe headaches, tremors, memory problems ie: fuzzy brain which in turn caused stuttering and problems with concentration. I also gained weight, experienced days of complete lethargy and nausea.
It must be said that my consumption was high ( at least 2 lts per day plus numerous packets of sugar free chewing gum to combat the dry / metallic taste in my mouth) and over a sustained period of time (20+ yrs).

Also worth noting is a suggested link to thyroid disorders.

I am happy to report that since completely cutting this detritus from my diet my symptoms have all vanished. Even after reporting this back to my GP I could not persuade her of the link to Aspartame.

Also worthy of consideration is the fact that this awful substance is also found in non - diet drinks / sweets and other produce. You really do have to read the label on everything. Often it isn't even listed and all that's to be seen on the packaging is a wee foot note saying ' may contain a source of phenylalanine'

What's really scary is the number of ready to drink / eat stuff aimed at kids which contain this. It's a damn mine field out there.

I've heard rumors about the whole "sweetener is poison" deal, but I've never looked into it. I just read the ingredients on my 5 Gum and lo and behold, there on the package is written "ASPARTAME". No wonder why my mom feels sick every time she chews gum!

Spry gum has no aspartame. It has xylitol which isn't bad for you. Also Stevia is a safe sugar free alternative in coffee.

My roommate is only 30 years old, told me that she went on diet soda for fear of gaining weight. After 2 years on it, she was retaining water very badly. Her ankles turned an odd dark color and retained water in the pockets of skin tissue. She happens to be very athletic! and runs cross country. The aspartame somehow caused this swelling in her lower legs and it moved into the calves region. When she stopped drinking it, the swelling stopped but the dark skin tissue remains around her ankles. The doctors don't know what it is, or what to do about it.

Scary stuff indeed.

Actually half of the cast of the Canadian show that gave Mike his start came down with parkinsons, and is one of the strongest indications that parkisons is actually a brain injury, not a disease. Could easily be aspartame, but then again, so many in North America live on the stuff, I'd expect to see much higher cases. My gut tells me t hat some people are more susceptible to aspartame than others, which is why you see some people, in the minority, have really strong reactions and others just gain weight and get stupid.

Horrible horrible stuff and now they are allowed to call it a "natural sweetener" if that isn't a kick in the face I don't know what it.

However, saccharin is well tested and is safe, it is a natural product of salt and recommended by doctors as preferential to sugar

Saccharin is also a known carcinogen and has caused cancer in lab rats. My father used 1 equal tablet(saccharin) in his coffee daily and had to have some kind of surgery due to the damage it caused to some of his organs. (I was very young and can't remember exactly what was going on with him.) His doctor told him to cut out the equal or suffer worse problems.

I stick with Stevia.

ETA: I just realized OP had talked about equal. I looked it up and found that equal is aspartame. I don't know if they changed the recipe but my father used the brand name Equal for a while but switched to a generic substitute that was saccharin, not aspartame. This was 30 years ago. I know that the problems he had were caused by saccharin. Maybe he switched to a type of generic sweet-n-low or something.

I'm allergic to it. So I will die if I have it for, like, a few months. It just doesn't filter out and it eats up the nerved. Last intoxication I had took a few years to repair the damage and get over it.

Best to just not bother with such things.

Hello ATS,

I want to help everyone avoid this issue. I need to share a story. Since my daughter was born 7 years ago my wife has been really sick most every weekend. The day began and ended in the bathroom for her and she had been to every doctor around, every specialist.

No one knew what was wrong with her, and she had pretty much accepted that there was something wrong with her that would not be fixed. Her gallbladder was removed and that did not help.

And then a couple of months ago after reading an article on a conspiracy site we agreed to stop the Equal in the coffee. She loves equal, to the tune of 20 packs a day in her coffee. We swapped that for sugar and she told me last night that the problems are gone after a couple of weeks, and she is starting to lose weight.

This was month one:

At month two, we cutout all sodas, tap water, and she is 100 percent back to her old self. If you drink Aspartame; you should be aware that when reheated, it turns to formaldehyde. If you continue the course you can get full blown MS, including tiny holes in your brain.

Aspartame was originally being designed as a drug for Lupus. By accident; a tech accidentally licked his finger, and noticed it was sweet, and this is how we got Aspartame.

Please my new friends on ATS, cut all Aspartame out of your diet and I guarantee you will lose weight and feel better within a month.

That is really good news. I too suffered from the same poisoning, except mine was from Splenda. I had Splenda everyday, I also supposedly had stomach cramps, weight gain, extreme headaches (like they would not go away), heartburn, memory loss, and I was started to get cramping in my joints and muscles, i got rid of asparatame and splenda, all of my symptoms disappeared in two weeks!! I feel great and haven't had any of that crap since!! Yeah this really does exist!! I also forgot to mention, that I had hand trembling, and numbness, my hands would go completely numb.

Dunno if its true, but i was told the Germans used aspartam in some of their ww2 bombs - if the bomb didnt kill you then the aspartam made you stupid. I expect its actually in the drinks and sweeteners for this reason- i bet TPTB dont use it.

Whilst I sympathise with the OP, guidelines are for Acceptable Daily Intake ADI - drinking a crate of soda a day would not I suspect, be acceptible and could cause all manor of side effects. That is like blaming cakes for putting on weight!
