Listening to a story on NPR, and sensitized to the length of Mubarak's reign for obvious reasons, it stood out to me when they mentioned that Tunisia's leader was in power for approximately the same amount of time. I wondered what the other area leaders reigns were and what I found was interesting. Much has been made of the Bush connection to the ruling family of Saudi Arabia in the book “House of Bush, House of Saud” but some other interesting patterns emerge as well. All but Egypt, Lebanon, Algeria, and Tunisia have rulers of the same family over this period of time. Look at the transition points and compare them to our own history in the United States. Egypt gets it why can't we? Granted we "voted" for "change," but very little has changed under Obama. We are still involved in 2 wars and he still follows the same corporatist policies.

Relevant Corresponding Bush Timelines:

March 23, 1953 Bush co-founds Zapata Petroleum Corporation with William and Hugh Liedtke.

November 8, 1966 Bush is elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and serves as a member of the House Ways and Means Committee. Bush is the first freshman legislator in 60 years to be chosen for this committee.

February 26, 1971 Bush is named the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Prior to assuming his U.N. duties, he visits The Hague, Brussels, Vienna and Rome to observe international organizations and specialized agencies.

January 30, 1976-January 20, 1977 Bush serves as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Though supposedly with no experience at the agency, in his book Family of Secrets, Russ Baker ties Bush's days in the CIA all the way back to the 50's. He was in Dallas the day Kennedy died and is tied in heavily to Watergate. Bush Jr, was unaccounted for just before JFK Jr.'s death.

May 1, 1979 Bush announces his candidacy for President of the United States.

January 20, 1981 Bush is sworn in as Vice President of the United States.

March 30, 1981 Reagan Assassination attempt by John Hinckley Jr. In 1980, Hinckley Sr. was a Texas oilman who, the records show, strove mightily to get fellow Texas oilman George H.W. Bush the Republican nomination for president. The Bushes and the Hinckleys were frequent dinner companions.

July 13, 1985 Under the provisions of the 25th Amendment to the Constitution, Bush becomes President of the United States from 11:32 a.m. to 7:22 p.m. while President Reagan undergoes surgery.

July 20, 1985 Bush is appointed Chairman of the Task Force on Combating Terrorism.
[ed note: Terrorism? 1985?]

November 8, 1988-Bush is elected the forty-first President of the United States of America.

January 20, 1989 -January 20, 1993 Bush stops being 2-term Vice President and becomes one term president. [ed. Note: That's 3 terms so far if any one is keeping count.]

January 20, 1993-January 20, 2001 Bill Clinton's Presidency. While not in the Bush family Clinton pursued many of the same Bush policies. From an ostensibly left-centrist position.

From 2007: Former President George H.W. Bush says the post-White House friendship he has nurtured with the man who turned him out of office won't make him go any easier on his successor's wife, Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton. Bush and former President Clinton in recent years have worked together on numerous charitable causes, including jointly raising money for victims of the Indonesian tsunami in late 2004 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. (and Haiti in 2010.) [ed note: it has also been documented that Bush and Clinton go way back to Mena and the drug running that occurred there.]

December 13, 2000 Supreme Court abruptly terminated the state's month-long recounts in a highly contentious election. Bush had lost the nationwide popular vote yet narrowly defeated Gore in the Electoral College by the narrow margin of 271–266. After a five-week-long battle over extremely close results in Florida the SC made their decision. As a result of this, Bush won the state by 537 votes, the result of a November 27 recount that had been certified by Florida's Secretary of State, Katharine Harris. Recounts following the November 27 certification by Harris had narrowed Bush's lead to just 125 votes when the U.S. Supreme Court declared George W Bush the winner in their December 13 ruling.

January 20, 2001-January 20 2009 George W Bush Presidency
During the 2004 United States presidential election, concerns were raised about various aspects of the voting process, including whether voting had been made accessible to all those entitled to vote, whether ineligible voters were registered, whether voters were registered multiple times, and whether the votes cast had been correctly counted. More controversial was the charge that these issues might have affected the reported outcome of the presidential election, in which the incumbent, Republican President George W. Bush, defeated the Democratic challenger, Senator John Kerry. Despite the existing controversies, Kerry conceded the election the following day on November 3.

Kerry and Bush were both members of Skull and Bones, a Yale Secret society. Kerry was class of 1966, George Walker Bush was class of 1968, just 2 years later. Between them was Derek George Bush in the 1967 class. There were Walkers (the ex-presidents middle name, also as in Herbert Walker Bush) in the order in 1888, 1889, 1916, 1919, 1927, 1928, 1931, 1936, 1942, 1944, 1948 (along with George HW), 1953 (another Bush in same class). Prescott Bush was class of 1917. George H W Bush was class of 1948

Bush's administration is populated by many of the same people that figure heavily into previous administrations, one of whom, Vice President Dick Cheney assumes a historic amount of power for a vice-president. Interestingly, there were Cheneys in the Skull and Bones in 1888, 1889, 1892 (there were 2 Cheneys this year in a class of 15.) 1896, 1898, 1900, 1901 (another year with 2 of 15 being Cheneys,) 1904, 1958, In 1922 a Bush and a Cheney were in S&B at the same time. You're crazy...like a fox. If only they could get those pesky elections out of the way, you know, by having pre-determined outcomes. Sounds like something the CIA would be involved in, somewhere else of course.

When you finance and train entities like the CIA in the art of de-stabilising and overthrowing foreign Governments what in gods name makes people think they wont overthrow their own?

the US needs democracy.

So i see a bunch of topics that are covering protests in the Middle East. I found a good article from the CBC who did an overview of whats going on, and thought it would be a good resource here. Thanks Cyotepoet for sharing your thread here. We had the other one locked to move discussion here.

CBC - Middle East Protests at a glance

Since mid-January, North Africa and the Middle East have been gripped by revolutionary fever.

Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali stepped down on Jan. 14 following a month of violent demonstrations over worsening economic conditions, corruption and political repression. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak followed suit on Feb. 11, after more than two weeks of protests. And the uprisings have spread from there.

If there is a starting point to all this anti-government action, it was when a Tunisian fruit vendor named Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in early January after police seized his goods. He later died.

Bouazizi's act has touched off a wave of demonstrations in the region against autocratic governments, high food prices and unemployment.

Algeria
Egypt
Jordan
Lebanon
Morroco
Tunisia
Yemen

Other countries not included on the above list

Iran
Albania
Palestine - West Bank
Sudan
Saudi Arabia
Bahrain
Syria

Yes. You addressed H. W, Bush's role in the Central American drug running. I remember as VP his phone number was in pilot Eugene Hasenfus's phone book. But back then his voters were more interested in saving America from Communists and satanic cults than wanting to hear about corruption. No, not in that shiny city on the hill!

Here's something else that is very interesting about these countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Here are the countries' official Coats of Arms as copied from the wiki entry on the subject. I've gathered them into 2 types for obvious reasons

The Birds: Eagles, Phoenix's, Horus? I'm not sure but the similarities are striking

And the rest: What's up with Oman?

I never unserstand why the gun ho nationalists who spout justifications for invading and murdering innocent men, women and children the world over, never seem to get involved with disputing the obvious corruption that controls the very regime they support.

Odd that.

This is obviously a communist conspiracy involving red people under my bed, dirty bombs, a serious lack of freedoms and confectioneries from Nigeria, its the most logical answser to any and all accusations of corruption.
