I never understood this myself. How is this justifiable? or BET(Black entertainment TV)....or JET magazine, etc...etc... oh and the Negro college fund! Why does the black culture have a free ride to blatantly be racist and at the same time be completely hypocritical at the same time by screaming whites are racist. Most of the time I see blacks self segregating themselves from everyone else. I see it every day here at work. Many will go to lunch and invite some co workers to lunch but instead they will go together with only black workers!....Self segregation.

I think Black History Month is racist, and divisive. I believe it was the liberal government pandering to socialist University blacks and professors. I am suprised it hasn't been changed to African American History Month. It is sepratist. What about whites? Yellows? Browns? This type of thing does not unite people, it separates them. Same with Martin Luther King Jr, who has just become a token black figurehead for the liberal pandering government and black racists that seek to continue division. Black History Month should be scrapped, and replaced with Heritage Month, were all peoples of all races can learn of their respective ethnic heritages. And Martin Luther King Jr day should be scraped and replaced with Racial Unity Day. Our government is racist, in the way it seeks to divide, separate, and designate, and classify people all based on race, and their racist agendas are anti-white.

Justifiable?
I think it's a form of reparations .
Maybe a token piece of racism to be used by blacks against those that did/do oppress them.

There is nothing wrong with racial pride be it black, white or any other color.

There is EVERYTHING wrong with pride. You want to be proud of something as trivial as SKIN COLOUR? What the hell is wrong with some folk? Ever heard of the saying: "Pride is the downfall of men"? What is it exactly that you think you are talking about?

i always wondered why there cant be a white history month??????

Because 'white folk' don't grow up in a world where the 'the white folk' dictate what goes and doesn't. Oh wait...

It has to do with identity. You know about the barbie doll test they do with kids, where the kids pick between a 'coloured' and a 'white' barbie doll? It might be impossible for you to comprehend the point I'm making here, but in a nutshell; self-loathing because something as trivial as skin colour determines so much in our GLOBAL society.

he said if I were black I would just call myself black.

But if you were human, what would you call yourself?

My thoughts on this topic? People should stop tripping over stuff as trivial as skin colour, no matter how non-trivial it is made to be. Humans are humans.

I dont see any reparations for the Native Americans! quite frankly they had it much, much worse that the Black culture ever did. Same goes for the Chinese that worked the railroads in the 1800's...you don't see them crying for reparations. Same goes for the Irish(white people by the way)...you don't here them asking for reparations from the English. Sorry it just makes absolutely no sense to me.

Both the native Americans as well as the Chinese have been able to hold on to their own culture, therefore, are able to identify themselves with their own heritage.

That has been made near impossible for African Americans.

FYI: The Chinese do not cry because they are well on their way to overrun the US with hard labour and smart folk. Basically on their way to OWN the US.

What did African Americans have in the form of culture/heritage that could not be reproduced here and now.
They've made up their own "flavor" and perpetuate that "swaggar"...

As far as I'm concerned, Black History Month is just another oportunity for those who want to complain about how their ancestors was brought over here as slaves, and how it's been nothing but a living hell for their decendants ever since! I think its long past time for Blacks to quit walking around with this huge "chip" on their shoulders concerning slavery! As much as I detest slavery, I'm sick of it being used as an excuse the way many Blacks in the U.S.A. will use it to justify living off goverment handouts, handouts that originate in the pockets of hard working taxpayers, whom I'm sure just happen to be white. Over the years this "slavery chip" has evolved into quite a useful tool of manipulation that has given the decendants of those unfortunate slaves, a life they never would have had if still living in their countries of origin. It's a hell of a thing to say, but it's my opinion that slavery did wonders for future generations of a people who happen to be decended from those who suffered during the years of slavery. It could not be anything but horrible to be rounded up and torn from family, then chained in the hold of some tightly packed slave ship. If you survived the nightmare voyage of sickness and the stench of death and the excrement many wallowed in for most of the crossing, it was a thorough hosing down and off to the stockyards and put up for sale.
It's over, and has been for a century and a half, so get over it! Would those who carry the chip on their shoulders be happier running around and living in a jungle? That's what most of them would be doing if not for their ancestors who were brought here as slaves. Instead of complaining about being hard done by, do something positive with your lives! There are plenty of oportunities for those who want to better themselves.
Everyone bleeds the same colour, and we all live on the same very tiny rock, and it's high time we learned to get along as one people! Until we do, we'll never find our own place in the cosmos! There's too much other crap to take care of, without having to worry about the skin colour of our neighbours, and as far as I'm concerned there are a heck of a lot more racist Blacks than there are Whites. How about a "White History Month"? That would sure get the sparks flying, eh?

Just another example of how crazy the world is.

You don't get the point. It was TAKEN from them in the form of severe oppression. Huge chunks of history have been scrapped out of the history books just so that 'whites' could feel superior. Hence the superiority complex a lot of you are showing in this thread, sure, you can disguise it, but it's still there!

They've made up their own "flavor" and perpetuate that "swaggar"...

You seem to interpret television images with heritage? Which is funny because that is the next point; the culture of a people has been ripped from them(don't try to deny this) and instead of teaching the youth about their heritage, they are being instilled with media images...you are made to believe their culture is what is shown on TV...and you see nothing wrong with this and claim it is something "they've" made up? Riddle me this: Who owns BET?(using it as an example because earlier on some dimwit claimed it was something that discriminated against whites - hello delusional folk, how are you doing today?)

I'm sorry I mistook you for a well-thinking adult earlier on, but that won't happen again, I promise.

Apparently blacks are the only race that needs to remind all the other races and ethnic groups that "Hey, some of us DID do something!"

I know we are all supposed to feel reaalllly bad about what happened to (some) of their great great great great grandparents .. but unless your white (in which you have to feel bad, it's the law) no one cares.

Edit just to say, since some people have issue with Blacks "missing history and herritage" since they were sold (by their own people) to whites and forced to live in the Americas .. If I were black .. I'd be damned happy that my ancestor was forced over here, where you can live as a free American today, unlike your African counterparts in Africa. Liberia, Sudan, Nigeria, Congo, Rawanda, etc, etc etc ...... or America?

Im multiracial but mainly black

But its amazing that in these days of freedom marches, great storms, and the prophecy coming true that they still find away to fit some racial news in american.(imagine that) This is a joke we are all the same and everytime they mention something like this it just stirrs up anger in peoples hearts. Anger, jealousy and envy are all earthly desires that are taught to us from a young age.

I forgot it was black history month before reading this thread.

Black history month is in short an insult (to everyone but especially to black people).

We over validate someone's success when we think that person is disabled in some way or just starting to learn. Thats why pre-school teachers say things to their children like "way to go", "good job", and give smiley faces on papers where the school children trace their names. People treat the disabled the same way. There is nothing wrong with this. These people need extra encouragement and validation. But the general adult populace does not need this.

Are black people collectively as a whole some immature disabled idiots that are so bad at messing things up that they need a month to celebrate the accomplishments of those few who proved they weren't idiots?
Give me a break.

Where is Asian history month? Arab history month? White history month? No where to be found! And black history month sticks out like a sore thumb.

What is wrong with wanting to be around people who are like you? Thats not racist, its human nature. You put yourself around the ones you are comfortable with. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being comfortable with those who are like you and share your same culture.

If what you highlighted above is racist then every single person on this earth is racist.

And we all segregate ourselves in one way or another. I fail to see how there is anything wrong with this.

There is White History month.

January
February - Shared with blacks
March
April
May - Shared with Asians
June
July
August
September
October - Hispanic heritage month is split between September and October (15th to 15th)
November - Shared with Indians
December

White history never stops. Every history book you pick up is chock full of white history. Nearly every secular holiday in this country absolutely revolves around white people. And the "History months?"

February is the shortest month
May marks the anniversary of Chinese slave labor completing the transcontinental railroad
Hispanic month isn't even a month, it's just 30 days between two months
November is, of course, dominated by Thanksgiving, which is like The definitive "white pride" holiday.

And white history is not paused for them - in fact, all of the heritage months are dominated by discourse on how those races have interacted with whites. It's still "white history month," just that the history books go "And here's a little blurb about what our slanty-eyed chattel were doing in California!"

So... Yeah, hey. Pay attention in school. Pay attention out of school. You'll learn that your complaint is invalid.

Also takean economics class. At least sit through the first day where you learn about "supply and demand." That'll bring a new perspective to the "Africans sold slaves!" thing.

Actually it's due to blacks intentionally being written out of history books in the US, for nearly a century, from the 1870's to the mid-1960's. There was a very real effort to strip nonwhite history from the picture. In some ways, it's still there.

I know we are all supposed to feel reaalllly bad about what happened to (some) of their great great great great grandparents .. but unless your white (in which you have to feel bad, it's the law) no one cares.

It's not the law. Please stop being an ignorant liar.

I don't give a damn if you don't care, or if you feel so much remorse that you hang yourself in a closet. That's up to you. However, you need to at least be informed; of course, you seem to prefer ignorance.

So, here's a question.

What would Africa today be like if it weren't for the slave trade and subsequent colonialism? Millions of people were stripped from Africa for three hundred years. Enough that entire kingdoms were depopulated. This enabled European powers to move in and set up colonies, which directly led to situations such as we see in Sudan, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe. Liberia is like it is because of American slavery. No lie, freed blacks moved to that territory and transported the US plantation system to the tribes living there.

I think it's pretty easy to say that had the slave trade never happened, Africa would be a pretty decent place; it was pretty nice prior to the Portuguese sailing off with that first load of slaves, after all.

Wood, my good friend,

The slave trade was imported to the Americas by the Europeans, who inherited it from the Romans who inherited it from...

Well you get the point.

One of the issues that gets lost in this discussion is that slavery plagued all races, not just blacks. There were slaves of all races. It just so happens that the US Civil War was the end of slavery in the western world and the facts of that one conflict have come to be just about all anyone learns of the history and specifics of slavery.

The average school kid, these days, due to pop culture and crappy education seems to get the opinion that the US invented slavery and that only black people suffered from it. Neither of these assumptions is factually accurate.

As for "Black History Month"... Well racial guilt, and the manipulation of it, are forms of racism and are used to discriminatory ends. Kids should be taught black history, white history, yellow history, red history, brown history, and any other history that I have failed to mention, all in concert and as part of a normal curriculum. Singling any one race out is simply biased.

I don't want a "White History Month" any more than I like that there is a "Black History Month". In the long run this practice simply procreates the ideals of racism as it forces children to see their differences and not celebrate their similarities.

Pride in ones heritage is an awesome and wonderful thing. Right up until the point where one culture is raised above another in recognition or importance. This is, by definition, racist behavior.

It is designed to separate and marginalize blacks in America.
And also to galvanize the overly sensitive populations of the other races and create divisive opinions such as many of those expressed in this thread.

Well, there's a good reason for this.

Slavery in the Americas was quite a bit different from slavery elsewhere. It did start with the Spanish and Portuguese (in fact it started with the conquest of the Canary Islands, and the enslavement of the people living there), and was picked up by the British and Americans, but the fact is, the system was very different.

A slave in say, Ancient Rome could work towards his own freedom. He could, in essence, buy himself from his owner. The children of slaves in Rome were freedmen - not Roman citizens, but still not a slave. Slavery in most African and Native American societies was actually a system of adoption and replenishment; "We went to war with your people, and three of our men died, you'll be taking their place." The slave would eventually become a member of his captor's people. Slavery in Muslim states was similar to the Roman system, with the additional provision that conversion to Islam led to freedom.

However, the system institutes by Christopher Columbus, that later spread through the Americas, first with Indian slaves, then African, and eventually Chinese, was a sort of slavery where you worked until death, and your children, and their children, and their children were prisoners under the same system. America is the only nation to have gone to war to preserve slavery, and is the only war to have committed genocide in an effort to expand slavery.

Slavery was never fun for anyone, anywhere, at any time, I'm sure. But the system we find in the Western Hemisphere does deserve particular mention, because it was very different from what you find elsewhere, and its impact was far greater.
