I hope so too, it's a great fishing spot, particularly for squid.

Why? Why? Why?

Seriously now you are telling me that you fish for squid? Squid?

What in the HELL would you do with a squid if you caught it? Scare little girls while running after them on the pier?

Sometimes I just don't get you people...

This is what I see when I look out my bedroom window, as I did just some minutes ago to take this photo.

Not the best view, but one that shows most closely where I live without really showing it.

Thanks for adding I noticed there are not many pics like this added yet ... and I can relate to the built-up places ... it all helps to create a more complete picture of where ATS lives

I live in the lovely City of Derry in Northern Ireland.

The historic city walls, with some cool cannons

And not too far away we have Grainan Fort and Burt castle and the Mussenden Temple, below is the view from Grainan Fort,

More photos from where I live.

The next four photos are from one of the six parishes from which Almada was formed, Cacilhas. It's the one closest to the Tagus river but it was not affected by the tsunami that followed the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.

A typical street, not much wider than a car. We can see the limestone paved side-walks and the granite paved street, common in Portugal. Going up that street will take us to the "Quinta do Almaraz", where in 1987 some technicians from the municipal museum found some Phoenician and Egyptian objects, showing that Cacilhas was already a know commercial centre linking the Middle East and Western Europe.

This photo shows the are to the right of the previous one. In the background you can see the river and parts of Lisbon.

(click for full size)

The "new" church, built to replace (and in the same place as) the old one, destroyed in the 1755 earthquake.

(click for full size)

Some 50 metres from where this photo was taken and almost in front of the church, in 1981, some workers found a Roman salting factory, that was dated as being from the first century AD. The salting tanks were reburied, it was considered the best way of protecting them.

New(ish) and old buildings, in the same street as the church.
The newer building is probably from the 1970s (and, by the way it looks, I think it was built by the same company that built the building where I live), while the older buildings look like buildings from the end of the 19th century, with the traditional azulejo covered front.

(click for full size)

This is the front door of the school where I spent most of my youth (six years), built in the 1950s.

A small fountain in a small square in the old part of Almada.

(click for full size)

Now some photos shouwing the industrial part of Cacilhas (today all the factories and warehouses are abandoned), the Tagus river, Lisbon and the Cristo-rei.

(click for full size)

All the above photos were taken, at most, at a distance of 1 km from where I live.

Edit: all photos taken by my sister.

Ireland is somewhere I've always wanted to visit and even though it's so close the opportunity has never presented itself yet ... but one day maybe.

Thanks for the pictures

Derry is beautiful, my mother's mother was born in Ireland, sad to say I never met her as she passed when my mother was 14 years old.

I have been all over Europe but not Ireland, hopefully one day. My daughter and her husband spent their honeymoon in Ireland in September 1998 and loved it.
