Orderly transition in Egypt must begin now: Obama

www.theage.com.au

US President Barack Obama has intensified pressure on besieged President Hosni Mubarak by calling for an "orderly transition" of power in Egypt that "must begin now".

Mr Obama, who spoke to the Egyptian leader for 30 minutes after the latter announced that he would not be contesting elections in September, also praised the Egyptian people for their peaceful and dignified protests.

He pledged continuing US support for the pivotal Middle East nation in the aftermath of its political shift.

Good to see the US backing democracy (for whatever reason), let's just hope this pledged 'support' doesn't mean 'the new US payrolled Egyptian administration'.

"It was the strongest public statement so far issued by the US administration as it has walked a political tightrope during the protests, seeking to decouple its support for Egypt from its backing of Mr Mubarak's 30-year rule."

Keep an eye on them.

Can you imagine:

If a foreign leader made such a statement to the American people and/or their sitting President?

What gives anyone except Egyptians a Right to demand anything?

George Washington said it best: stay out of the internal affairs of foreign countries.

Let the Egyptians rule Egypt.

Oh well then ..... if America says that egypt had better put a stop to the unrest then they should do as they are told.
Oh Please.
What has America done for the world lately. Except get the world on a hate campaign against muslims, and help the world become obese. America should worry about America.
Egypt will fix egpyt.

pfft says the guy who is gearing up for a reelection campaign after in the last elections candidates FROM HIS OWN PARTY not just declined but said HELL NO when he offered to come and campaign for them that's how much he is hated....

Mr. o (yes the lower case is on purpose) take some of your own advice and step down NOW before YOU do any more damage here... mubarak isn't the only bad apple in the international leaders basket.

I think it has more to do with the US creating some political distance before the man leaves his post.

Obama is a force to be reckoned with. Deposed, and imprisoned too.

Seriously though, the only thing I could possibly see him doing is backing the Muslim Brotherhood.

Glad we voted for this guy, he's just incredible, really incredible.
