NY, the new Detroit?

Mayor Warns of Mass Teacher Layoffs

New York City could lose $1 billion in education aid from the state, forcing the nation's largest school system to cut more than 21,000 teachers, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday.

As Gov. Andrew Cuomo prepares to unveil his first budget proposal since taking office on New Year's Day, Mr. Bloomberg and his new schools chancellor, Cathie Black, are bracing for what could be devastating cuts to city schools.

On his weekly radio show Friday, Mr. Bloomberg stressed that he has yet to receive word of a definitive budget proposal from the governor. "Scuttlebutt is that the education budget will be cut statewide, and New York City's share of that would be a billion-dollar cut," he said.

If the governor proposes a $1 billion cut and the Legislature approves it, the mayor estimated the city would be forced to cut 15,000 teachers, most of which would be accomplished through layoffs. That's on top of plans, outlined by the mayor in November, to cut 6,166 teachers in the fiscal year beginning July 1.

Now 15K + 6k = 21 000 teachers...

According to Wikipedia, there's about 80 000 teachers in NY, for 1.04 million students. Now that makes 1 teacher on average for every 13 students.

If you make the cut, that makes 58834 teachers for the same amount of kids, or 17.7 kids per teacher, an increase of 33.8% load for the teachers remaining... me thinks if this happens, strikes are gonna happen.

I've worked in the public school systems for over 10 years now, and I have never seen so many cuts nation wide as in this year. Everyone wants to complain about the quality of education, but the same people who complain also complain about too much money being spent. Fewer college students are going into education, because they fear no job security and the pay in many cases is far less that the cost of getting a teaching degree. It's just a sad situation, IMO.

dont worry its ok, there is still plenty money for tanks, bombs and fighter jets to make sure that there will be someone somewhere who will always be worse off.

Sadly, you're right. It just sometimes seems as if those leading the country just don't have their priorities straight. If everyone ran their household budgets like the government, we'd all be in bankruptcy or jail.

The U.S. could afford to cut their military spending by more than half and still outspend all other country military budgets by millions.

i wonder when the last time the us was threatened with an invasion, my guess was it was a long time ago, certainly before they had the biggest and most expensive miltary in the world. the us used ww2 for its own benefit as they let the uk, russia and germany lose most of their equipment before joining in as they all had bigger militarys at the time.

anyway back on topic, new stricter abortion laws plus less teachers kind of makes new york look like they are heading back to the crime ridden times of the seventies. (legal abortion is seen by many macro economists as the reason for new yorks crime rates dropping so rapidly and not the former mayors hard line stance on crime.)

Good. Most of the "teachers" are communist scum preaching propaganda anyway. Let them go get real jobs.

Actually, we know what "out of work" communists do: riot!

Fire 'em all and shut down the Department of Education.

Good riddance, half of those teachers are biased and only teach what the government wants them to teach anyway.

ARG! I despise politicians soooo much ..

How about they cut 26% of all clerical, bureaucratic positions, even school admins and other non-essentials?? Why the hell do they always go after teachers, fire and police?

Oh ya.. because that's the only thing people actually care about in regards to Government, so when the Government takes it away, they are more inclined to vote on new levies for higher taxes..

@$! the Government... sick bastards. How can he sleep at night proposing cutting the most vital of services to our children.. With a big smile no doubt.

I take it you never been to an inner city school before.
You're better off homeschooling your kids.

At least those tanks, bombs, and jets do their job unlike the teachers who give us some of the worst educated students in the world.

Don't get wrong, our massive military budget is extremely wasteful but we have to face the fact that the education system is broken. Students "learn" more about how "racist" America is than learn basic literacy. Students "learn" more about the virtues of homosexuality than learn basic math.
