***Communicate if Your Government Shuts Off Your Internet: (a must know piece)

Scenario: Your government is displeased with the communication going on in your location and pulls the plug on your internet access, most likely by telling the major ISPs to turn off service.

This is what happened in Egypt January 25 prompted by citizen protests, with sources estimating that the Egyptian government has cut off approximately 88 percent of the country's internet access.

What do you do without Internet?

Step 1: Stop crying in the corner. Then start taking steps to reconnect with your network. Here’s a list of things you can do to keep the communication flowing.

Preventative measures
Make your network tangible
Broadcast on the radio
Phone
Fax

Getting back online
Find the privately-run ISPs

I put this up due to the most recent examples of a Gov't taking out the internet to stiffle communication/news/ etc. I feel it is important that each of us be prepared for the same type of Gov't internet shut down-as I continuingly see Obama pushing for an Internet Kill Switch.

One of the greatest things we can do in any event is communicate. Almost as important at weapons and food-in it's own way(s). So please read the entire info presented at the Source article & then you can add to it. This is the other reason I put this thread up. I firmly believe some of the minds we have here at ATS maybe able to contribute useful and proper information-if needed.

Although It's possible, I really don't see It happening.

I don't think they'd ever actually be dumb enough to do this. They would have to completely shut down many countries with how much we depend upon computers and the Net these days. Also, the second that people found out the government had shut off the Internet, riot groups would double or treble instantly.

But if they cut off phone and internet... as in egypt... then instant messaging is more difficult... but there are ways around...

Was just talking to my wife about this last night! You hope it never comes to that but why not be ready. HAM radio and short wave radios were my ideas, although I don't have any experience with eith one.

Land lines... I haven't had a land line in almost 6 years. Might have to look into getting hooked back up!

In the article it talked about removing the password protection on your wireless router. I'm not sure how this would work? By doing so do you create your own network or does at least one person still have to have access to a functional ISP?

S&F, thanks for the info, i've copied and saved it to my HDD. Seeing what is going on in Egypt and other countries are sure to follow, its best to save files like this, so if TSHTF you will be able to communicate. Best way to win a war is to disrupt the enemies communications!! One of the oldest tricks in the books of war.

I forget what they called it but someone was putting up thumbdrives in public places where people could dump and retrieve information.
For example they will find a crack in a brick wall and putty the thing in there.
Anyone else remember this? I think it was a great idea.
Very serious question that needs to be addressed here in the US.

Even here on ATS the interest level for the coup event in Egypt is distracting. A made for TV coup focused near your camp is a powerful tool that will confuse and distract all but the most devoted members of your audience.

As others have mentioned this current event is really putting democracy on trial. Its not just "about" pulling the plug on the internet in Egypt, its potentially about locking the doors to the free speech and voting on a global scale.

Dead Drops! What a great idea! Great outside the box thinking. I wonder how long they last before they need replaced?

We did an experiment back years ago in trade school. Took a long wire and stretched it between two structures,insulated on both ends. Took an am/fm radio and tied a wire to the antenna connection. Tied that wire to the stretched wire where we could move it back and forth along the length of the stretched wire. Allowing us to pick up ham and short wave communications... You might not be able to get your word out but you could hear what's happening else where. I think they called it a dipole antenna.

Another way to do "drops" is to create an internet address account.
Write an email but save it into drafts.
Allow others to know the password/user name.
Then they can get the messages without going through an ISP that may be compomised.

I have been interested in getting started into ham radios for awhile now. There are so many options out that it makes my head spin at times. I also think that you need to purchase a license from the FCC, I don't know how long it lasts or costs.

I'm also interested in shortwave radios. Again don't know much about these but I would assume that there is more available news sources that could by pass any type of Gov. control. Am I wrong? Are these just fancy radios that get the same programs my current CD/Radio get? Or would they serve as a viable option to get information now or in a emergency?

Here's a CBC article on how the Egyptians are doing it -- mostly using old fashioned "dial up" access thru the few remaining independent ISP's.

You may be right about that. But all the "people who matter" will be in their underground bunkers....so it will just be you and your neighbors duking it out. Oh yeah, they will probably shut down more than the internet before they go underground. Who will the riot groups be protesting to then?
