Having lived and served next to South Korean soldiers it's very disheartning to see my brothers on the other side of the fence being treated like this.

I have great respect for the resourcefulness of the South Koreans and trully see them as one of our closest allies.

Just to imagine there are still families torn apart by the DMZ on the 38th paralel.

Very sad for me to see, I have seen similar pics of North Korea before but it never ceases to amaze me.

Who's the one arguing or omitting the truth here? You're the one who claimed that there were zero homeless people in Norway, and everyone gets social services for free. All I did was show you that there's about 1.4 million people homeless in Norway, and pointed out that they pay for all those services through taxation.

As for North Korea, well, at least we can agree on one thing.

Awesome pictures indeed!!! I found them very eye-opening. Not to mention, the hotel that was left and forgotten in the 90's... If that thing would've been finished, it would've been a great achievement. The design of it is pretty cool.

Enough already.

Or US needs to pull that Capitalist stick out of thy @ss and stop punishing the N-Korean people and sanctioning them.

Get over it, they are Communists, you are Capitalist, get used to it. Not everyone can be white you know.

Thanks for the photos.

Sir!!!!
I am an American and I assure you that looks nothing like my country. I did not see one drug dealer, pimp, prostitute, alcohol billboard, homeless person in a box, neon xxx sign, security camera, fast food restaurant or police car.
Sheesh.

I don't think a homeless person can escape to Norway without a dime in his hand. It is a hell of a freedom.

We are free to make our own decisions here. What reason is this man or woman homeless? Are they homeless because they have an addiction problem and they spend every dime on vodka or crack? Maybe they've committed a terrible crime and can't obtain a job to feed themselves. Or maybe they are mentally ill, in which case they belong in a hospital where they can be treated. Not everyone's life is going to be perfect even in a free society. To live in a "Free" society doesn't mean you have the freedom or access to everything you've ever desired. It means you are responsible for yourself. Sometimes we're dealt a bad hand life, whether that was due to our poor choices and actions, or maybe due to the actions of someone else. If a homeless person really wanted to go live in Norway, one way to do that would be to clean themselves up at the homeless shelter, go to the unemployment office and look for a job, any job just to start. This is a hypothetical situation, you provided no specifics why this hypothetical person is homeless, so I can't offer a detailed solution.

Wow... you have a rather offensive take homelessness in America. Many people are homeless because they are jobless, their mortgages unfairly raised, school loans, medical bills, etc. If it makes people feel better not helping homeless people by thinking they "did it to themselves", then be my guest. It's funny that you use Norway as an example because they have virtually zero homelessness, free healthcare, free education, heavily regulated banking practices, same freedoms, and, no... they don't want us there.

Oh, and your fried from NK you were talking about. Was he there right after the Eastern Bloc fell or after the Arduous March? I just find it hard to believe he was hungry there recently. After they got back on their feet after the fall of the Bloc, they've been able to stabilize their food resources.

Why do so many people think that any place where you don't have to swipe a credit card is "Free"??? I don't understand this mentality. These people pay taxes all their lives. They pay for all these services through the nose. They may not receive a bill in the mail, but they get billed by their Government every paycheck. Nothing is Free! Especially Government aid. That never comes free. If our Government decided to raise our taxes that high and promised all sorts of services, the outrage would be almost too much to stand.

I don't have a negative view of all the homeless, I just think that many homeless people ended up being homeless because of bad choices in life. There are those who are temporarily homeless (lost their job and house to the current economy), or those who are homeless because they ran away from abusive homes. Maybe they had untreated mental problems, who knows. It could be any number of reasons. Why are we even on this subject, and whoever said I never helped a homeless person??? There are no homeless people in Norway? Since when?
Homelessness in Norway

As for this man who told his story, he escaped in 2005.

Look... I don't want to argue but I can't stand half-truths just hanging out there. The homelessness in Norway (that you linked to) is one in one thousand. In America, we have 3.5 million people who either are or have recently been homeless. That's almost one in one hundred. That's ten times as many. I'm not judging, it's just not fair to not be entirely honest.

As far as their taxes, they pay 47%. I pay 30%. I pay faaaar more than that 17% gap in social services that are privatized. Again, just trying to lend to the honest discussion. So... let's talk about NK, alright? I'm sure we can all agree that it's in trouble.

The only kind of people who can't see the suffering and the real causes for NKs treatment of their people are those who have never gone hungry. Hunger/starvation has the most crippling effect on the mind and body - many people have turned to canabilism in their desperate need to survive. Little children picking seeds and corn from the mud don't know why they living in such base extreme ..... can't find the word. Their survival instinct simply kicks in without anyone teaching them how to forrage they rummage even in faeces for undigested food - anything to relieve the pain.
Anyone homeless where ever they live in a western society don't know what starvation is or how it really feels. It's all relative to what they have been accustomed to in their prior lives and they would swear they truly know what starvation is. They don't. Unless they have been subjected to extreme abuse they really don't. But even these people are the result of the lack of an wholistic approach by succesive Governments who live a life of obscene glutteny and only know the world of Dog eats Dog. They have no souls.
Hunger in the world is not necessary! Where ever! you find it, it has been imposed on the people by those in power and the no one in the US have ever experienced this but hey - don't count your chickens .......!

You can't show a successful communist nation, but you CAN show a successful socialist-democratic nation. In fact, the happiest people on earth are in socialist-democratic nations, not fully capitalist nations. Furthermore, america, while not as socialist as the so called happiest nations, still has socialist attributes like medicare and food stamps and other programs that help the needy by redistributing wealth via insurance schemes and taxes. Some say democracy doesn't need economy, but economy needs democracy. We're humans, not altruistic slaves or merciless investors/bankers.

And what we're seeing here is not just a reflection of failed communist policies, it's also a reflection of cultural differences and a history of warfare in that region. Korea is a hidden war. Japan and russia fought over it for dominance. Then america assumed japan's role in south korea after WWII. The same BS has been going on for a long time over there. Korea is where the big boys play games. Lets not pretend, china/russia have had a HUGE influence on north korea and the US has had an equally HUGE influence on south korea trying to sell their interests abroad. The US has been much more successful in selling themselves in this war, but they're still equally to blame for the conflict over there. This conflict of interests over there is helping to breed the divide between the two koreas.

This is warfare, but it's not always with guns and bombs. But it sometimes is. I feel sorry for Korea. I wish I could erase the past few hundred years of messup and separate the korean people from the invaders. But it's impossible. There's too much momentum and it will come to a crescendo.

Read the history. Russia and Japan. US. China. Etc. It's a torn country.

What the fu*k? This is an idiotic post if I ever seen one. Punishing the North Koreans? LOL how? Last time I checked, Kim Jong Il is responsible for severe famine and the death of 4 million of his own people. You know why the famine happened? Because he refused help from...well, US!

Learn history. Son.

You wanna see homeless? The North Korean government won't allow you to. Millions and millions of Koreans are starving to death because of the selfish and sadistic government there. As for porn shops...not sure. Security cameras? I'm pretty sure the capital is engulfed with them. And beyond.

Today's North Korea is 70-80's China.

The problem is, they can't get out of the problem.

I remember seeing a picture of women chasing a train and picking up fertilizers.

My dad said that China was even worse in those days. But even today, there are still people in China who goes out into the field and picks up wheat one by one.

Just be glad that you can live without worrying about food and water. And maybe Westerners should stop hating third world nations for being brown and poor.

The Famine was caused by Kim

Is that what they teach you in school?

In August 1995, North Korea made an official request for humanitarian aid and the international community responded accordingly.

China and South Korea remain the largest donors of food aid to North Korea. The U.S. objects to this manner of donating food due to lack of supervision.[12] In 2005, China and South Korea combined to provide 1 million tons of food aid, each contributing half.[13]

Thanks, man. I did't want to be the one to keep arguing with people over facts in this thread. The US used (and still does use) food as a weapon in the Koreas. This does not make us the "good guys" by any stretch of the imagination.

It's amazing how many preconceived fairy tales can be swept away when a person wills themselves to pick up their keyboard and type in "Google" and click on a scholarly link. People just can't bring themselves to even do that anymore. They just go to "Foxnews" or some other parody site.

Thank you so much. My experience in viewing this amazing work was nothing less than life changing. I went through a range of emotions that took me back to the Cold War. I know getting these photos takes great courage and I appreciate this in the photographer.

Im so glad many of you have enjoyed this post. I know the pictures touched me deeply as well. Seems I have a lot to catch up on reading here.

It does make you wonder how the country would evolve without the leader they have now. Always amazes me we can kill who we want, yet others remain untouched. While I dont endorse the killing, dont get me wrong there, it does make one wonder why they, (tptb), are keeping him around.

I was blessed to come to know a North Korean who's family escaped. The horror stories really were like something out of a bad novel. My heart really went out to my friend. His determination to be the best man he can be and his appreciation for our country could certainly teach many that take so much for granted a few things. I know it did for myself.

As much as I really hate to say it, would a war free these people? I suspect they would just become enslaved to another degree. So sad the priorities of this world.

Anyhow, thanks for all the responses, Im off to read more of them now.
