Obviously people are making emotional connections to an theoretical idea.

To state for posterity, I personnally am not condoning the idea of a human hunt,
but their is potential if utilised properly.

As for the main point, we are running out of fresh water, it is being sold to other countries as we speak, and to say that overpopulation is a myth is an unresearched statement.

The only way to fix the problem is to reduce the number of people on this planet, I worry that people can not see the resolution and would rather let the problem continue.

Way to go. Leave the problem for someone else to solve rather than deal with this today.

There are just not enough resources on this planet to give all 6 billion people what we regard as an acceptable standard of living with all we enjoy today. Are you suggesting that I lower my standard of living so someone else can have a higher standard of living? Not going to happen and over my dead body.

Leaders and elected leaders have been making decisions on who lives and who dies for thousands of years, and because leaders have not been prepared to make hard decisions, we have a population that is out of control.
And what evidence can you offer that overpopulation is a myth? When I travel the globe, I see up close that there are too many people on this planet. Too many people will go without food and clean water today, all because we are not prepared to control the population.

I am quite prepared to make the hard decisions so that you can sleep easy at night.

Unlike some, I have looked at both sides of this issue. And as hard as I have tried, I can’t buy into it. We have the science, and the means to end world hunger and thirst. While I do not buy into the “We can fit the whole world into Texas analogy”. There is more than enough empty ground on this planet, in each country, for agriculture and livestock. As to water, we have the science for that too. Desalination is a start, but not necessarily the whole answer.

The only reason our population has become a problem is because it’s been made a problem by those in power the world over. What you see when you travel the world is not caused by excessive people, but by excessive greed, and the lust for power. The intentional suffering of others allowed and encouraged by TPTB produces fear in the herd to push them toward acceptance of a one world government by consensus of the people. It is nothing more than an in your face use of “problem, reaction, and solution”. And we can’t see the forest for the trees!

Respectfully. Proof is not what you need sir. You only need to look at this from more than one perspective. But you have chosen to look at it from theirs. And they are lying to you.

But if you really want evidence. It’s out there to be had. But I’ve found that when someone has stooped to the same low as those who hold up signs saying, “Save the planet. Kill yourself.”, that no amount of evidence will change their mind, or bring them any epiphany, until they’ve decided they want a fresh perspective.

Sounds good to me. But the Hunters would become the hunted. Prizes would be the cool new guns I`d collect.
I`m thinking it would be better to just nuke the crap out of ourselves when this stuff starts to happen of looking down at others for being workers sold out by their Government. You could become homeless.

The US isn`t overpopulated but we sold out all our farming and jobs.

2012 just can`t get here fast enough it seems.

Well here .....

Math of increasing population

thats the math..
now some number, i know wikipedia isn't a stand alone source but i will post anyways...

en.wikipedia.org...

okay and here

geography.about.com...

The thing is that people have a hard time conceiving of how we could be over populated, but with beter medicine and healthcare programs people live longer. I know that birth control is helping, but alot of people still have children even though the birth control products are available.

As for the water..our water

locations and thier water shortages
here check its easy

It is called a democracy.

Ok then, let's vote on it!

But really... that's nothing but the classic case about how one person says "A", but another person doesn't get it and thinks "B" or "C", and then wants to argue about them rather than "A".

I suppose that's another way to say that was an irrelevant response to a facetious statement that had nothing to do with "democracy" in the first place.

Well I was thinking, as I do at least once a day, and I thought if human population control
is such an important issue because we can't sustain the numbers that we have indefinetly,
then perhaps we should have a seasonal human hunt.

You could buy tags, like with other animals, and hunt for people,
of course it owuld have to be for those without the assets to exempt themselves
from the hunt.

Like deer the hunted would have to be of appropriate size, and gender for your tag.

It seems to work for controlling the population of other over populated animals....

Good thought excersize. And funny too!
I don't know if I would go so far as to issue tags and bag limits and all that.
I'd prefer a short duration of a time period in which to eliminate the evil ones around and the particularly stupid ones in positions of authority that do more harm than good to the public.
If it were sun up to sun down on one given day a year, that ought to be enough. It would also give you time to get rid of those who'd rather kill you also!

sad remedies for a sad situation.

Yeah the only way to understand anything is to think it out.

Now a human hunt would be an extreme, but people are saying we have lots to give to everyone, its better to share.... which when it comes down to won't work.

Why won't it work.... I'll put it this way, you have barely enough food for you and YOUR CHILDREN.
Not enough food production for everyone.
Government offers up a solution, a seasonal human hunt. Some protest, but most conform. Why? Because when it comes down to the meat of the situation... If YOUR family has needs to you they trump anothers needs.

I think we should do nothing about it, the problem will resolve itself eventually.
Global warming you say? When the sea level rises many people will drown, less people = less emissions
Overpopulation you say? We run out of food and a lot of people die. Less people means less demand for good.
Nuclear War you say? We blow a bunch of countries up, less countries means less nukes.

We also have Yellowstone extinction level event coming up.

Alfred Hitchcock actually took on this idea in one of my favourite movies, Rope:

Rupert Cadell: "Personally, I think a chicken is as good a reason for murder as a blonde, a mattress full of dollar bills or any of the customary, unimaginative reasons."
Janet Walker: "Well, now, you don't really approve of murder, Rupert? If I may?"
Rupert Cadell: "You may... and I do. Think of the problems it would solve: unemployment, poverty, standing in line for theatre tickets.... After all, murder is - or should be - an art. Not one of the 'seven lively', perhaps, but an art nevertheless. And, as such, the privilege of committing it should be reserved for those few who are really superior individuals."
Brandon Shaw: "And the victims: inferior beings whose lives are unimportant anyway."
Rupert Cadell: "Obviously. Now, mind you, I don't hold with the extremists who feel that there should be open season for murder all year round. No, personally, I would prefer to have..."Cut a Throat Week"... or, uh, "Strangulation Day"... ."

I think that about sums it up. Needless to say, Hitchcock was trying to show just how ridiculous this idea is (though, Rope was actually based on true events). And I would agree with him.

Thomas Paine - “The sublime and the ridiculous are often so nearly related, that it is difficult to class them separately. One step above the sublime makes the ridiculous, and one step above the ridiculous makes the sublime again.”

When you have a shortage of the essentials for life, murder will be common place. To take a proactive step towards preventing this one way would be a seasonal hunt.

The evidence suggests the government has already begun to control the populace through additives in the food and water.

When you consider the options, would you rather have the government slowly poison us until enough are deceased to meet thier criteria or would you rather have an open hunt.

Yes. Actually I hate to think of it.
I think some of these gfuys are right it will eventually take care of itself, and I thnk probably due to a naturally morphing disease.

On the other hand I sweat the idea that some great cataclysm might occur that plunges us into "darkness" in more than one way. I do not like the idea that so long as I am alive, I may need to shoot looters out in the street.

That's darned sure "population control" in one form.

Others mention being able to feed others. There are some important philosophical papers out there dealing with this topic. Much of it points to the idea that we cannot create dependent groups such as nations or cities, as they will bleed the others dry, and they will have no motivation to change their own conditions.

Part of me thinks that response is due to our psychological addiction to the current profit motivated monetary system that we have. It promotes the idea that if you work hard for someone else that you will always get what you need and deserve. Those that do not or cannot work... do not deserve...

On the one hand, it is a position that promotes cruelty. I might add that population control would also promote cruely. On the other hand it validates the view that some people are "better" or more "deserving" than others, which gives some psyches the comfort they seek.

We can say: Teach them to plant wheat and corn!

But if the water is inaccessible over some nasty plots of land... that will not help.

We CAN educate groups about over population, but they invariably back slide.

But the truth be known about me, I don't really think that we can ethically just go out there and start shooting then without eventually ruining our inner selves,

Over population IS a problem, but perhaps we should let Mother Earth decide the issue...

and ... it looks like she's a gonna...

I do not disagree that we may have the science to produce more food, but that is not the issue. Just because science can create food, does not mean that we should. What about the resources required to produce this food and the resources these people will require to live. The planet is already telling us enough is enough, yet you appear to choose to ignore the messages coming from the very thing that gives us all life.

The only reason our population has become a problem is because it’s been made a problem by those in power the world over. And just who are these people in power you claim have created the problem with population? What I see when I travel are parts of the world is not caused by greed but just too many people living to too small a space. Even if I accept that currently there is enough land for over 6 billion people, who is going to tell people they have to move from their homeland to the spare land, and much of the spare land is not best placed to support life, so we will have to use more resources and place even more stain on this fragile planet.

Respectfully. Proof is not what you need sir. You only need to look at this from more than one perspective. But you have chosen to look at it from theirs. And they are lying to you.

Proof is exactly what I want, not words. You accuse me of not looking at this from all angles but you have no way to know what I have done to research issue of the global population, yet you choose to dismiss my argument because it does not agree with your view.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one. Obviously we have reached different conclusions based on the evidence we have have available to us.

But for the record, I do not dismiss your argument. I simply disagree. Opposing views to my own are not offensive. They are an opportunity for learning. Even if I don't agree with an opposing view in the end, it still forces me to take a look at things from the perspective of others. And sometimes, I change my mind.

I'm sincerely looking forward to seeing you around ATS. You're someone of conviction. And that, I respect.

Well as good as that idea is...and there already is a fellow in Alaska who does exactly that...they have found his victims, naked bound and gagged, killed in the snow like deer....anyway as great an idea as this is... we should probably first try ENCOURAGING BIRTH CONTROL... instead of prohibiting it on "religious" grounds like we do.

Or my prefered method...whenever anyone shows up to buy a gun...kill them with it.

To all concerned...re fresh water we really need the marsh lands and wet lands. About 1/3 of those areas have been destroy already but this was before scientists were aware of their important, vital role as filters for the oceans.

Also the forests are necessary. I did not know you need forests to cultivate good soil for growing things. The dead leaves make good dirt. Without land for growing certain trees and crops we are done for no matter how many or few mouths there are to feed.

We have already destroyed a significant amount of rain forest. Many feel this is our planets pharmeceutical closet and without it we lose the ability to cure our illnesses.

Certainly we can and will move to hydroponics for growing food - which is happening in countries like Japan and China.

The bees are vital too. To eliminate the cause for their colony collapse and population decline would help to feed millions..indirectly. I worry because what the bees pollinate are the fruit and vegetable defenses against cancer.
We will have simultaneously decreased ozone and little cancer preventatives/ protection.

Skin cancer is going to eliminate quite a few of us as effectively as loose nukes. Mostly white people.

The good news is this if you will hear it...There is time to save what we have left.

Although we have lost so much in ignorance there are ways to save the rest now that we are aware how important these natural areas and insects are to our survival. If we utilize birth control that is available to us without placing restrictions, scorn or stigma on their use we will have less "accidental" births and go a long way to curbing the population explosion.

We need to cooperate with each other rather than find reasons to hate each other.
We can hate the folks who tear down the rainforests but it would be better to meet provide, satisfy, their basic human needs...

...and prevent the percieved necessity to destroy limited and vital "communal property" to have these needs met.

Stop calling this ssocialism. I call it saving our ass.

The reason people go without clean water and food is not because there isn't enough to go around. It is because of crooked governments and war.

While I am sure in some cases, you are right, it is not crooked government and war that is the major reason while people around the world go with our clean water and food, it is too many people in one place and the nature resources can not support that number of people. And no matter what we do, we just do not have enough resources to support all the people on this planet and where they currently and want to live. We have to make hard decisions to ensure we have a planet we can pass on to futures generations, and no amount of social management of resources will support a population of 6 billion.

When I saw this thread title, I thought it was about George H. W. Bush. He hunts humans, according to Cathy O'Brien. But unfortunately for those who would like to try it, it is a sport reserved for the elite.
