Liebermans at it again.

We see how an internet kill switched helped Egypt today. [/Sarcasm]

How are these people not seen as criminals and prosecuted?

Honestly, what free nation would ever want the ability to turn off news and communication to their citizens?
What benefits could ever come of it?

The US is becoming unnervingly corrupt. I simply can't believe there is such a large mass of sleeping citizens still.
Pathetic. I'm disgusted.

It's called fascism, and it's nothing new. They want control, and they don't care whose freedoms are tromped for them to get it.

The internet is a clear target, because it's worldwide, and they can't regulate it well (yet). Free information goes against massive mind control (which is practiced).

Allowing them to get their cold clammy hands on the internet will be the worst mistake we have ever made; next to allowing them to establish The Federal Reserve.

Great find and thread *S&F*

Internet Kill Switch Could Cause Chaos

More likely, a separate event such as a natural disaster would be made worse by a collapse in electronic infrastructure on which a country had come to depend. As to the threat of a cyberwar, this was more likely to reflect a conflict that was also taking place using conventional military means than one happening purely using electronic weapons.

There was also a tendency for governments to conceive of cybersecurity using conventional military assessments of importance.

“We think that a largely military approach to cybersecurity is a mistake...Most targets in the critical national infrastructure of communications, energy, finance, food, government, health, transport, and water are in the private sector.”

None of this was being made easier by confused terminology which rolls any cyber-security event - whether a criminal Trojan attack, a ‘hacktivist’ DDoS or a malware event such as the possibly targeted Stuxnet attack on Iran - into a single set of statistics.

First you have to ask the question as to WHY something like this policy would require Obama to re-open it? Could it be due to FaceBook, and other big corporate giants, getting hacked into? Afterall, I bet you that Mr. Zuckerberg may have some influence on the governments. We know that cyber crime is on the rise, so it could be just a precaution.

Secondly, we have to ask what the target market would be to have their privacy killed online? I don't believe I will a target be a target unless I become a cyber attacker on government sites, corporate sites, or even public sites.

Could this just be another conspiracy to control who actually has access to the internet, with future 'throttling' of the internet to take place? Maybe. The only way we will have a better understanding of what this policy entails will be when we can actually view this record. Then we can dissect it for what it's worth.

In the grand scheme of things, I don't think it is anything major for the regular consumer of telecommunications.

You know, its times like these when I really appreciate when the group of hackers brought down paypal and mastercards website. It's times like these when people with skills like they posses say, enough is enough and take matters into their own hands. STAND UP people and be UNITED, we need to all unify and take our country back! Stop letting these greedy/selfish bastards ruin us! They are no different than we are. We all came out of the same hole! We the people, have numbers, they do not want us to unite against them because we will succeed.

Look at what's happening in Tunisia,Yemen, Egypt, the first thing the authorities do is to try to shut down the internet.
The internet is a source of communication and information that is difficult to control.
I bet they sometimes wish they never would have given the peasants computers.

Obama issued a Subpoena to twitter to know who's been watching the twitter website of wikileaks "tweets".

Then those people had their internet turned off. They had to call their internet provider and NSA/FBI disguised as Cable company folk got to walk into their homes pretending to fix their internet...when it was shut off at the ISP office.

Obama has EXECUTED his internet kill authority already given to him by Congress last year.

Our morning news was talking about this, this morning. Egypt has had all internet and cell phones cut off now, and I think even their land lines. It only took an hour for them to shut it all down. The news anchors sounded genuinely worried that this could happen in North America also.

It would be absolute chaos over here, with so many things totally dependent on the internet. Banking machines, debit cards, even some gas stations don't function without the net running. Many would not be able to work, even outside of the home.

A few years ago when Israel bombed Syria's nuclear facility, thier jets were able to get in and out without ever being detected.

New stealth technology? Nope. Israeli government hackers. They hacked the Syrian military computers from a back office in Israel...The Syrian military showed no incomming jets or missles...perfectly clear skies as the jets invaded the airspace and bombed the facility and left. Clear radar screens. The Syrians had no idea what hit them.

Last year China redirected 15% of the worlds internet traffic to a single facility in China...15% of everything communicated on the net...emails, transactions, all communications. They won't comment on why they did it, but everyone knows it is a practice run and next time they will be more careful not to be detected.

Both of those things happened and are documented...not conspiracy theorey!

A rogue nation could scramble or obliterate our financial system, move massive funds abroad, shut down our digital communications, effect our military's ability to respond etc. They could cause an immediate financial crisis or security crisis.

This is not a "Kill Switch" in the sense that it will shut down the internet. It simply allows the gov to give an order to a company like Verizon to stop accepting communications from Iran for example if a widespread cyber attack begins.

It would be illegal for the gov. to ask Verizon to cease traffic for political purposes. And if the gov. was prepared to throw the constitution out, they would not be asking ISPs they would be hacking things apart themselves or sending military to ISPs...otherwise this bill as a tool of oppression makes no sense. It is not a physical "kill switch".

Bottom line?...IMO we need the ability to stop a massive cyber attack...and thier is no doubt that we will see serious attacks on the way from terrorists or other nations. We can do it without threatening civil liberties and the bill guards against misuse and committees are scoping over it to ensure just that.

Also...The gov can shut down the internet now if they wanted to go oppresive...no law required. This bill just gives them the ability to tell Verizon or other providers to put a halt on traffic from a rogue nation if a cyber attack is detected.
