Egypt Expands Communications Blackout

By Robert McMillan, IDG News Jan 28, 2011 7:17 am

Not only Internet access has been disrupted by government order in Egypt as protesters continue to clash with police in anti-government demonstrations. The Egyptian government's blackout extends to mobile phone operators, who have been ordered to suspend service in some areas.

"Under Egyptian legislation, the authorities have the right to issue such an order and we are obliged to comply," said a company representative of Vodafone, which runs a network there.

The cut-off of Internet access happened just after midnight, local time, according to Internet monitoring firm Renesys, when the largest Internet Service Providers operating out of the country stopped providing the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing information used to connect the rest of the world with computers in the Egypt.

This should be illegal...

It's the PEOPLE making themselves heard here!
And They try to silence them by all means and to disturb their communications..

This is real WAR between a government and a people.

Maybe he will announce that he is stepping down?
On the other hand maybe he will warn people to go home or the military will use force?

The Egyptian people should close all Western Embassies, only then can they be sure that Mubarak won't receive his orders from his superiors. Without those orders he is a moose staring at an on coming lights.

The West needs to stop supporting this fascist dictator, and needs to condemn him. It is the right time.

I find it odd that the West was very active towards the protests in Iran, and even provided means of communication for them, what are they doing for Egyptians? For Tunisians? For Algerians? For Yemenis? For Saudis?

Oh wait, nothing, because they already have Western puppets, so instead the West will help the fascist dictators rather than the people.

Predictable behaviors of bigots.

The reason we don't see this in America or Britain is because government has yet to be truelly threatened.

Bet your bottom dollar that if protests were ever as wide spread and constant as what we're seeing in Egypt, our governments would do the exact same thing.

Drastic times require what? ... DRASTIC MEASURES YES!?

Why is your head so far up your own ass? I'm serious about my question, too. Stop the divisive rhetoric. We are witnessing an interesting even unfold before our eyes, don't sling mud right now please.

Absolutely, first Tunisia, then Egypt and now Yemen. I think the PTB should be shaking in their boots as the people are not going to be stepped on any more. This could be the beginning of something major.

imagine how other authoritarian regimes in the area are reacting to this, considering that most of the Middle East consider Egypt to be their cultural and ideological capital.

Loud explosions/fire being heard now. Lots of smoke and fire. Completely crazy what is going on there. Looks like the curfew plan was a big failure.
No surprise there really. You can't just tell a nation to stop and go home when they are in full riot mode.

Who do you think provided the funds and weapons now being turned on the citizens of Egypt? Who do you think trained the goon squads that are protecting the puppet president of Egypt?

Bought by and paid for by Amerika. Ah, that the citizens of the US had the courage these poor people have shown.
