Well, it seems I spoke too soon. The volcanos are starting to really look active. Several small quakes at Rainier and a couple at helens (they won't get recorded until later though because they fall below the automatically recorded threshold.

If you haven't already, I would HIGHLY recommend trotting over to Erik's blog at Big Think (link above). He's a straight shooter that will give you an honest answer. Very well-known, highly respected vulcanologist who hates it when people get alarmed over nothing (not saying you are because I'm baffled by all the strange seismo activity, too I've watched the USGS site for about six years now) and so he'll tell you right off if he thinks there's cause for concern.

Thank you for the suggestion! I created an account and posted a question to him with a link. I have enjoyed that site for awhile now, but only as a lurker.

The quakes on Rainier and Helens most likely won't get recorded now until sometime Monday, after everyone gets back to work. This is the kind of stuff that bugs me. I mean, are only computers watching them right now and only flagging anything over 2.5? All the broad-band seismos AND IRIS seem to be down. This means as far as I can tell, only a couple are working on Rainier and three or four on Helens. Baker is shot with one not working at all and the other one still all over the place.

Well, hopefully it doesn't matter and this IS all just normal 'back-ground' noise. But I still think something else was going on earlier this week.....time will tell I supose!

Hey westcoast!!

First, I would like to say that you have sincerely impressed me with your dedication and studies regarding everything that you have shared. I've been following this thread since you started it and not only do I admire you for all your hard work and concern, I also agree with your theories.

Did you notice THIS post over in the Yellowstone Thread???

Thanks...I commented over there.

I suspect it is just that they were made aware of the advice that has been there for some time now. Especially since the hurricane debacle...FEMA has stepped up their game and encouraged local governments to through Emergency management grant money. Some of that grant money sent me throug a Response/Decon program and a natural disaster response/preparedness seminar. Interesting/scary stuff. But it isn't new.

It is always recomended to have at least 72 hrs worth of emergency supplies for everyone. It is estimated that is a minimum amount of time that infrastructure can be down during a natural disaster. (for examples, hospitals have to make sure to always have 72 hrs worth of supplies to be self-suficient. A lot do not meet that requirement)

Being prepared is just common sense. We (myself included) shouldn't need a wake-up call to get our butts moving and do the smart thing for our families!

Edit to add (oh! And thank you for the nice comments. I am glad you like the thread!

I hope so "West." You all are in my nightly prayers, seriously! I'm in the NE southern New England and we're suffering from ice right now.

I'm watching your thread and crossing my fingers nothing dreadful happens.

I just responded in the thread about the Crows, but I wanted to know if anyone else was experiencing this to see if maybe it's yet another indicator of something brewing around here.

Year round I see loads of Crows/Ravens, and just this morning I was wondering where on earth they are. I've only been seeing one or two here and there.

As well as the day that the humming sound intensified for me, I think 1-27-11, so that I was hearing it over the TV during the day, it also sounded like Spring had sprung with birds singing and all kinds of activity including chipmunks, etc. But by early afternoon, it went silent and I haven't heard or seen any birds or animals, including my neighborhood of woodpeckers and blue jays in the woods outside my apartment.

My point/question being...has anyone else noticed a drop off in bird/animal activity in the vicinity recently which isn't normal for this time of year?

I've been keeping this to myself since it happened, but, since you've mentioned birds and strange noises, I think I should mention this. I know I'm on the opposite coast from you, but, considering the global nature of what's been happening, I think it's still relevant. So, that being said...

First, I have noticed that, for a week or two now, crows and blackbirds around here have been few and far between. Up until early this month, our yard's been infested with them, but now, all of a sudden, there's none. I think I've seen 3 crows in the past 2 weeks. I can't say if that's normal or not for this time of the year, but it's certainly unusual considering how many were here just a month ago.
And, in addition to this, I was laying here a couple nights ago, around 1 or 2 in the morning, waiting for it to start storming like they were promising. The wind hadn't picked up yet, and it wasn't blowing in the right directing to make any noise on this side of the house even if it had been blowing, so it kinda startled me when I heard a low rumbling sound toward the north side of the house. I even felt it on the couch...it was faint, but it was vibrating, and lasted probably about 4, maybe 5, seconds. So, I sat up and made sure there was nothing driving or flying by (which there wasn't), and it happened a second time. It was fainter and only lasted a couple seconds this time, but I still felt it. It was weird, I've never heard and felt anything like that around here before, and we're not exactly near any active fault lines. I checked USGS, but there weren't any earthquakes recorded for here at that time. So, I have no idea what it was.

Anyway, I figured I'd throw that out there, considering it's somewhat similar to what you guys have been experiencing.

Thanks for letting us know that (whether you're on the other side of the coast or not). While I'm glad I've paid attention to the local wildlife & their normal habits for years so that I'm noticing these things, at the same time it's a little eerie for me.

Anyone else?

Now that you mention it, I haven't seen hardly any crows. In fact, I can't remember being harrassed by any lately and they almost always make a bunch of noise in the trees near my house.

Sorry I haven't been around today, but it has been VERY long for me. I am writing this from the hospital, where my daughter is recovering from an emergency appendectomy for a ruptured appendix. Scary stuff, but she seems to be okay. *sigh* She is sleeping now, so I am keeping myself occupied.

I hope your daughter recovers well from her op. It can be scarey to go through.

The PNSN's for Helen's have gone quiet except perhaps the crater webi.

Hey West coast - REALLY sorry to hear about your daughter.Glad she'll be ok but a very frightening experience for you all none the less. That you are going through this and STILL finding time to connect with us shows real dedication and belief in your thread subject.I trust I speak for everyone when I say that we understand should we not hear from you now and then as our families are the priority. God bless.
I find your writing compelling and very well put together and have been following it avidly. This is one of the few threads I'm really paying attention to as it's domino affect may well be being seen across the States - possibly further...?
Thank you for your hard work and I look forward to news as and when you can give it.
Best,

The link is for a good website with lots of information but the latest news from the US Geological Survey includes no mention of any unusual activity in that area.

Best of luck with your daughter. As a father of four, I know how rough it is, even when your 'little' one is going to be ok. It saps our hearts, and reminds of how much we love them.

And also, continued thanks for your hard work on this thread, and your others relating to this topic. Your dedication is fantastic!

I am so sorry about your daughter - I hope she recovers quickly. I read this thread several times a day even if I don't post - your dedication is amazing.

What's with all the rumbling at Mt Helen's? I hope this is a good thing and not a prelude to an eruption.

Peace

Thanks to all for your thoughts and well wishes. She is doing amazingly well. It was ruptured, even thogh it was about 8 hrs from the onset of symptoms to surgery. Being an EMT I feared right away it was her appendix, but I didn't expect it to get so bad so fast. Anyways, she's had great care.

Helens so far today (knocking on wood) hasn't thrown up any recorded quakes, but I haven't had time to manually look at the seismos yet. I see there were a couple of other little quakes in other areas too. I am really hoping that this is a nice release and calm things down again for awhile. It is kinda odd that PNSN is actually updating the list for the ones under 2.5, I didn't think they did that on weekends. Either I am just wrong, or they are watching it a bit more right now too.

Hope all stays as is...will check back when I can!

I watch the weather channel with Jim Cantore. I was happily surprised when he put in a mention about St Helen and other volcano's making a fuss. He didn't really say anything that hasn't been said but I thought it was interesting that he commented at all.
I hope your little one is doing O.K.. Both my boys had to have their appendix removed. It was scary. I was told at the time it has something to do with the strepthroat virus. Being in the medical field I'm sure your well on top of it.
Lots of rest and plenty of hugs and ice cream. Ice cream isn't only for tonsils!!
