Hubble Top Ten

This is a collection of pictures from the Hubble Telescope over the last 16 years. These pics are rated in a top ten format, with the first picture being number 1. I had the link bookmarked for a couple years and found it when cleaning out some links tonight. This author did an amazing job of putting alot of info on one page and I figured I would share it with ATS. However the information about these pictures is widely spread and can be found at numerous sources throughout the web. Starry night is my favorite cosmic picture of all time...the source I'm using seems to think it is 8th though. These pictures of the cosmic landscape really make you think about how little we really do know.

The Sombrero Galaxy - 28 million light years from Earth - was voted best picture taken by the Hubble telescope. The dimensions of the galaxy, officially called M104, are as spectacular as its appearance. It has 800 billion suns and is 50,000 light years across.

The Ant Nebula, a cloud of dust and gas whose technical name is Mz3, resembles an ant when observed using ground-based telescopes. The nebula lies within our galaxy between 3,000 and 6,000 light years from Earth.

In third place is Nebula NGC 2392, called Eskimo because it looks like a face surrounded by a furry hood. The hood is, in fact, a ring of comet-shaped objects flying away from a dying star. Eskimo is 5,000 light years from Earth.

At four is the Cat's Eye Nebula, which looks like the eye of disembodied sorcerer Sauron from Lord of the Rings.

The Hourglass Nebula, 8,000 light years away, has a pinched-in-the-middle look because the winds that shape it are weaker at the center.

In sixth place is the Cone Nebula. The part pictured here is 2.5 light years in length which is the equivalent of 23 million return trips to the Moon.

The Perfect Storm, a small region in the Swan Nebula, 5,500 light years away, described as a bubbly ocean of hydrogen and small amounts of oxygen, sulfur and other elements.

In 8th place is Starry Night, so named because it reminded astronomers of the Van Gogh painting. It is a halo of light around a star in the Milky Way.

The glowering eyes from 114 million light years away are the swirling cores of two merging galaxies called NGC 2207 and IC 2163 in the distant Canis Major constellation.

The Trifid Nebula is a "stellar nursery", 9,000 light years from here, it is where new stars are being born.

Wow - that is so beautiful!
It makes me think back to some trance parties, and the closest art to that photography seems to be from experimental people.
I wonder sometimes whether we have this all inside us somehow, but what magnificent images!

faked moon landing?

They are beautiful pictures. Hard to pick a favorite but I go for numbers 2 and 4. Things like these reinforces how magical life can be, and to actually see these images from so far away never ceases to amaze me. It's food for the soul. Thanks for sharing.

Takes about 30 seconds of googling to realize they aren't fake nor photoshopped.

Your avatar looks more realistic than this crap Nasa creates, also 8 billion suns...lol...please! They must sit around and have a real good laugh at how gullible most are, looks more like 7 billion to me.

Oh and how exactly can anyone prove or disprove anything NASA says let alone these pretty paintings?

Whenever I feel sad I just look at Hubble's space photos, so beautiful and mesmerizing.

Most of those things have been photographed by amateur astrophotographers. www.itelescope.net...

If you don't want to believe anyone at all, get your own telescope equipped with a camera, and get snapping!

P.S. Strange that the Hubble Top 10 didn't include the famous (and very gorgeous) Pillars of Creation...
