That's an interesting take on it.
I was thinking of possibly a weapon myself.

Holy leaping cows Batman!! That was quick.
For something that nobody knew about for five years, they seem to know an awful lot pretty quickly.

They work in the dark you know.

MELIOR DIABOLUS QUEM SCIES

Translates into english from latin as -

better than the devil, whom thou shalt know

The patch for NRO Launch 49 depicts a phoenix rising from the flames. The patch also features fourteen stars, including one being carried in the bird’s beak. There also appears to be a fifteenth star obscured by the bird’s wing. There’s a long tradition in such patches for the stars to symbolize the number of payloads launched. Fourteen stars just happens to be the number of KH-11 type electro-optical satellites successfully launched by the United States over the years—including the one being carried into orbit by this bird. A fifteenth launch—the one obscured star—ended in failure.

The Latin words “melior diabolus quem scies” are inscribed on the patch. This roughly translates to mean “the devil you know,” as in the phrase “better the devil you know than the devil you don’t know.”

All of these symbols hint that this is the fifteenth launch of a KH-11 type electro-optical reconnaissance satellite.

Woah, LOL, on that website they said they had to move the launch time back by 2 minutes to avoid "an object in space"!!!

They take pics at different times.

They black out for a period of time during the actual launch.
For reasons obvious.

Someone over in this thread about 1 month FAA GPS warning pointed out that this rocket launch could VERY WELL be related to the fact that the FAA issued a 1 month warning for the South Eastern United States that GPS signals could be weak or not available for 45 minutes out of every hour.

The plot thickens...

now if this is what they are making public think of what the classified capability is.

They've admitted for at least the last 15 years that they can read newspapers from space.

Think how small the text is, and subsequently, the resolving power required.

It's NRO - of course it is classified! They are more secretive than the NSA because they know the state the of art; NSA simply uses it!

Anyone remember a little while ago the ultra-high resolution images on Google Earth? There are only two possibilities: either they were showing just a part of the capability, or they were showing the limits of the capability as it was at that time. As fascinating as people found it, it also demonstrated what they could see if they wanted to.

Maybe infrared cameras to see into homes or businesses. Then you don't put a spy plane or pilot at risk by flying them over areas that are deemed extremely dangerous. It's huge what ever it really is. I would venture to guess being that large it will be a spy satellite that will have multiple functions rather than one task.

May i suggest the rocket may be long enough to accept the 747 carried laser?
The laaser is acpable of taking a missle out in flight aparently(though its off to a rocky start)
maybe they are chivvying laserss into space to stop any incomming?

OOOh! Good eye on that one.
It's kind of funny how down the road all the pieces seem to fit right together sometimes.
