Hacker group's message on Internet censorship...cool!

I just found this communique by the Cult of the Dead Cow, an age-old clan of hackers, online freedom fighters, self-proclaimed cyber-ninjas, on the Communications Decency Act. Just thought it'd be a nice read in these days of repression of online freedom...

Lizard Speaks Out On Internet Censorship:

You see, my friend, despite what you have been told, the United States of America isn't a democracy. The founders of this nation, quite wise men, realized that the people were more than capable of being utter prats, and thus, placed many things outside the reach of "many people." That is what the Constitution means when it says "Congress shall make no law." It means no matter how much the people whine, and beg, and scream, and whine, their elected representatives DO NOT HAVE THE POWER TO CENSOR.

The people be damned.

Everyone in the technology industries is concerned that the Communications Decency Act will make the US non-competitive in international markets, because it will paralyze Internet service providers who will be forced to filter every single piece of personal email, every single Web page, and every single post made to Usenet through their ISP for potentially pornographic material. Which will make running an ISP in America impossible.

Many people feel that the religious right, in their crusade to control the world around them, do not realize that such strict laws will kill the US as a member of the Internet community. They're not as stupid as people think they are. They know the situation. They don't care. They want to rule, period, and if what they end up ruling is a fourth-rate backwater nation, that won't matter to them. Just so long as they are in charge.

They know about products such as "Surf Watch" which can restrict Internet access to certain content. THEY DON'T CARE. They do not want to protect their children, they wish to enslave you. They are not "misguided." They are not "poorly informed." They are not "concerned parents." *THEY* *ARE* *EVIL*. And, as they will be the first to tell you, there is no compromise or treaty with evil. The censors must be fought, and defeated, *by any means necessary*. By the ballot box if we can, by the cartridge box if we must.

Everyone should download and always use THIS (TOR) anyway.
It is one of the most effective programs there are at re-routing your IP address, all over the world.

Perhaps coincidence or something else, but when I leave tor enabled on accident and try to get here on ATS and other sites.. I cant get on at ALL. I have to disable and log in.

You mean you cant get on ANY sites or just certain sites?
I had troubles with it at first as well but I worked it out, its kind of a finicky app and if you have it enabled but you dont have the proxy settings in your browser correct, it wont work and if you have it disabled and have any proxy settings at all, it wont work. Also, if you use the firefox plug in, get rid of it, its way to buggy.
Other than that, it works fine for me, pretty much anywhere, just kind of slow sometimes.

No, just certain sites.. like ATS.. message boards and places like Amazon and etc. Otherwise TOR works like a charm.

Im not sure then.. It works fine for me on any site, unless its videos but thats because of the java/flash restriction.

The only program i had issues with when trying to get on ATS was peerblock, but I got that resolved now too..

Hmm.. I was assuming it was site blocks and not originating with me! LOL! Im running Linux and the hubby has some junk running on it.. its also a little netbook and Ive had issues with the linux OS for this particular netbook before.

Dammit, I guess I need to go mess around in stuff and more than likely screw it up worse ...

TOR doesnt block any sites, thats not the kind of program it is, peerblock is but TOR isnt.
TOR is just a proxy app, it routes your connection through other TOR users all over the world so your IP will
be masked when you visit a site.
I suppose it is possible that, by chance, you are being routed through a user that for some reason has his internet restricted from visiting certain sites but i doubt it.
Its probably something on your end

No I mean sites blocking tor/proxies or where Im routed through... we've been using tor a long time with no issues on the desk top so I figure you are correct on the fact its on my end.
