USGS Report - New and Ongoing Wildlife Mortality Events Nationwide

USGS and a network of partners across the country work on documenting wildlife mortality events in order to provide timely and accurate information on locations, species and causes of death. This information is used by natural resource managers, researchers, public health officials and legislators to help design disease prevention and mitigation strategies, to address interconnections between human, domestic animal and wildlife disease, and to assist in identification of 'normal' disease issues vs. biosecurity concerns.

These data are not all-inclusive. Information on some outbreaks may not be received until months or years after the event, but efforts continue to make the information as complete as possible. For information on previous wildlife mortality events and events that used to be on this page, please see the Quarterly Mortality Reports.

While the media has put a spotlight on mass animal deaths, there is nothing unusual about them.

"There's been an unusual amount of attention on this type of thing which does occur quite frequently," said Inkley. "Most mass mortality events in wildlife are caused by disease, some are caused by pollution, such as the Gulf oil spill disaster and some are caused by freak accidents."

Although the string of animal die-offs are unrelated, Inkley said climate change is the true cause for concern.

"Some 20 to 30 percent of species in the entire world could be moved a step closer to extinction by 2050 due to climate change," said Inkley.

I have not seen a report that was acurate "yet".............Many of the smaller die offs are going unreported....

I just posted about three bird die offs in Tennessee over the last couple days.............Only one local paper picked up this report so far.....

www.abovetopsecret.com...

It seems that your not going to have to search very hard to find a mass bird die off near your neighborhood very soon...

Good idea Zorgon, we need this as an ATS resource.

Even in the event that this "event" fades away it could serve useful in the future.

Before you Discount the Dying Birds….

Throughout history, animals acting strangely have been predictive of tragic events. Most of us remember the devastating tsunami that hit Eastern Asia in 2004. After the horrors of the tragedy began to unfold, some scientists and other experts pointed out the surprising lack of dead animals during clean-up. This wasn’t the first case where animals can sense something and take off, but it certainly was one of the biggest examples of wildlife’s sixth sense. According to a 2400-year-old document, ancient Greeks observed animals abandoning the city of Helice before a destructive earthquake destroyed it. This is one of the earliest known reports, but there are countless other examples and tales of strange animal behavior prior to a natural disaster.

I'm very skeptical about this.

The Tree disease situation is an ongoing thing and hasn't "suddenly" started! The decline in Honey Bee populations has been going on for at least three years. I have seen numerous documentaries about this as far back as two years ago.

The mass fish/bird deaths could very well be a normal thing (as normal as something like this can be).

It's the mass media effect. A dog attacks a child and it's in the news. Suddenly the news is awash with stories of dogs attacking people. We had this in the UK decades ago and thousands of dogs were needlessly killed in the witch hunt.
These things always happen, just because the media is hot on a story you hear about it when you otherwise wouldn't.

This spread of focussed information gives the impression of something strange or unusual going on, when it's more probable that it's simply a mixture of disease, pollution, weather and accidental death as the USGS states.

The same thing has happened with flu. The media goes into overdrive and you start hearing statistics that you haven't heard before. If every single Human death from disease was reported on the news you'd think there was a massive breakout in process, simply because you don't know the true numbers of deaths from disease!

I'm not saying this IS the case, but I am suggesting people need to take all of this with a pinch of salt. Get some common sense and perspective.
It could very well be something out of the ordinary (if it is, my money is on the magnetic pole shift) but it is MORE PROBABLE that the media is giving the false impression that these things are unusual when they are simply not.

I have a friend who works with the USGS, it's her job to accurately record species and numbers affected in each mortality event. She says that they don't track fish (don't know why).

She has tried to reassure me that this is all "normal" and said that she was shocked that so many animals die off but insists that more awareness has been made because of all the media attention.

Recently I have noticed that media attention has slacked off...I still believe that something is going on here.

Thanks for your posts on the subject!
