Sorry, just a general comment on my part. Nearly six years here, and longer elsewhere, and I swear, to hear the internet tell it, straight white guys are being gassed by the millions everyday. Not a day goes by on ATS without some schmuck posting about how he's being terribly oppressed. it's silly, is all, and your post does contribute to the flood of whining.

My post is fine; it's some of the replies that leave a lot to be desired.

No, the point of your post is absolutely ridiculous.

Of course it is; they've got a prize-pot of $4.4m. By overpaying the women, they are taking off money that the men should deservedly be earning. This is how it used to work, before they decided to pay equal pay for unequal work.

But if it were split any other way, wouldn't men then be getting overpaid? I mean if we're in agreement that $2.2million is a "fair pay," and that women deserve less than that for some reason, what do we do with the leftover money? Do we just diminish the pot? Or should hte pot be increased, leaving women with 2.2 million and elevating the men's award?

For that matter how are we determining the worth of these athletes' work? What's the pay scale here?

That analogy has no bearing whatsoever on this topic.

In fact, NASCAR racing is an sport where people are awarded money on their ability, not their gender. Danica Patrick is as good as a lot of the men, so she earns her prize-money fairly.

But it could be argued that it takes less skill than tennis, so that nascar drivers get paid that much is an affront to tennis players.

What's stupid is your straw-man argument.

Nowhere did I say that women should be penalised; I have no objection to the organisers paying out a total of $2.2 in the women's section, if they want to, just so long as the men are awarded more money for the extra quality, quantity and pulling-power of their tennis.

Equal work for equal pay.

You are arguing that women should be paid less-than-equal. That's demanding penalty for women, period. And your reasoning is ridiculous, because you imagine that not only is there an effective measure of skill, but that you rank above all women on it; despite having absolutely no proof of this.

What you're missing is that we're talking about entertainers here. if the crowd that shows up to watch the women's open is as entertained as the one that shows up for the men's, then they are performing equally.

Women's tennis is not a big crowd puller, though.

This is the point.

Men were always paid more than women in tennis, based on those factors that you mention.

Ok not don't know all the facts concerning tennis, but one thing I know is, that if there is no draw, if no one watches it, then they don't make money period, even if it's sponsored by some sort of rich corporations or people. And it's a spectator sport, if no one was watching the ladies play both life or on tv or whatever, then there wouldn't be ladies tennis on the tele.

A female tennis player becomes popular only if she's good-looking, or if she attracts attention because of her sexuality.

Ya well what can I say, maybe the men should start wearing short shorts or something, to attract that female fan base.
Like I said don't know all the facts, but I know of only one person who watches tennis, he is male, and he does watch males play tennis, but every time I seen him watch tennis, it was females tennis he was watching, way more often then male tennis. So going by that I would think that there is a fan base that would prefer to watch females play tennis. I really don't see your point.

I agree with OP that this is discriminating towards men players.

Not because women are less worthy, god forbid that sentence ever.
Because they play on 2 win set match and men play on 3 win set match.
So calculate how much are men playing and how much are women playing.
It's bizzare that some matches women play for 52 minutes and men play for 4-5 hours.
And those who bash the author of this thread - calculate- it is like job where you as men are working 8 hours for 100$ and women working 2 hours same job for 100$.
How is that not discriminating?
All respect to women but if our rights are equal - you will play the same amount of game or you will be payed less

tennis isn't a real man sport?

you want to be a macho man like village people?

why do you even come to comment on tennis when you don't know anything about it?

Perhaps it is me who has misunderstood the OP, but I thought the general premise was that, in a truly equal, non-gender biased society, there would only be one open and one prize... and may the best athlete win.

You are absolutely correct.

Expecting a separate women's competition to receive any way near equal pay to the men, when the women are clearly inferior at the sport, is as ridiculous as a group of men, who are 5-foot tall, forming a basketball league and then campaigning to be paid the same amount as NBA players.

This is exactly the point.

The maximum number of sets that the female champion will play is 21, whereas the minimum number of sets that the male champion will play is also 21 !

Add to this that the quality of women's tennis is so abysmal, then they wouldn't even merit equal pay even if they actually played the same number of sets.

I don't mean this comment to be facetious, but the fact of the matter is that women's tennis doubles up as ''softcore porn'' for a lot of male viewers ( especially teenage boys ).

For some reason, young Eastern European women in short skirts, physically exerting themselves, grunting and sweating, seems to bring in a lot of male viewers !

If you don't believe my above comments, then you only need to look at the official WTA ( Women's Tennis Association ) website:

www.wtatour.com...

You'll notice that all the pictures of the players are heavily airbrushed, and they adopt model like poses, putting on ''sultry'' expressions.

Bearing in mind this is the actual official organisation for women's tennis, and they are purposely attempting to sexualise and objectify the female players, then that tells you all you need to know about the main appeal of the ladies' game.

I stumbled on the image inadvertently.

My first thought when I saw the picture was that it was some kind of a bear cub.

It's certainly better than my previous avatar, which was a homage to the cult 1960s British TV series, The Saint, starring Roger Moore.

LOL.

You're possibly right; ''cute'' babies are possibly a result of evolution and natural selection.

Youngster ?!

I'm 30 in July this year ! Hardly a ''youngster'' !

You appear to have some issues regarding young men - especially those who are in tip-top physical shape, such as myself - but, as previously mentioned, it's your problem, not mine.

ps. I'm still flattered by the attention that you pay me, and your constant flirting.

You're not my type, so please back off.

The fact that you are attempting to use my idiom as a ''debating point'' tells me all I need to know about your post.

And there in lies the problem because the only dudes that would watch tennis that I know of. Other then the guy i talked about in the other thread, well the only way they would watch tennis is if there was hot chicks in short shorts, not because of the actual game of tennis. And what your arguing about is not sports or competition really. What your talking about is sex sells, and the image of sex gets those who would watch sports, most being males to actually tune in more then they would if some dude was hitting a ball with a racket.

Like I said that ain't discrimination it's more like business. If you all want to go for the whole competition or fair play in tennis. You will have to go to male vs female tennis and the best takes his place no matter what gender it is. Because even if the males started wearing short shorts and all that, you wont compete with the females in sexual attraction. Because females are more like lawyers or bill collectors in there mentality when looking at males, sexuality comes second before that for them. While males are more of the doing and competing mentality, and off course don't forget the millions of years of biology, that makes us so attracted to females. You cant compete with mother nature.

Basically you wont get much female fans to watch male tennis because males to females don't have the same kind of sexual draw that females have to males, you know this it's pretty obvious thing to see. While females being who they are, always have the sexual draw, even if they cant play tennis at all, like you said if she looks good then people will watch, and most of those people who watch will be males. Your really arguing that females are more sexier then males so they get more people to watch. That does not seem like discrimination to me, it does just sound like the sponsors or whoever putts on tennis shows are just trying to get more buts into seats, so therefor since we know that people like to watch hot chicks and sex sells and tennis is a spectator sport last I checked. Well It pretty much explains itself from there dude.

I have always wondered where the outrage is on the womens side of this issue. In today's politically correct society, why dont the women play the best of five sets? I mean surely they could handle an extended match.
It makes no sense to me. I would think that female players and fans of the sport would see this as an insult in todays world.

I wouldn't call it anti-male discrimination, but political correctness is the driving force behind this "equal pay" thing in the sports world. Men have to work longer and harder than women in tennis; they put in more time and effort to win against tougher opponents and therefore deserve a higher pay.

It's funny to see the hypocrisy of some women towards this issue: they complain that they should receive the same pay as men because they work just as hard in non-sporting occupations, but now want equal pay in a sport where they don't work as hard.

The same pay for less work...........that does not sound like equality.
It matters not your sex if you do the same job as me i would not be happy if you worked less than me but recieved the same pay.
