Without aid, DPS may close half of its schools

Class sizes also would swell under proposal filed with the state
Detroit Public Schools would close nearly half of its schools in the next two years, and increase high school class sizes to 62 by the following year, under a deficit-reduction plan filed with the state.

The plan, part of a monthly update Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb gives the Department of Education, was filed late Monday to provide insight into Bobb's progress in his attempt to slash a $327 million deficit in the district to zero over the next several years. Under it, the district would slim down from 142 schools now to 72 during 2012-13.

Now closing HALF the school is shocking enough.... but even WORSE... increase high school class sizes to 62? THAT IS PURE INSANITY.

If they do that, I bet teachers will go on strike, no way in hell they gonna accept that. Even 30-32 in a class is ``too much`` to really have a good following of all students... 62? Pure insanity.

Hopefully he's just making this up to have the funding...otherwise, Detroit is really even more screwed than I thought.

And since the kids will get less government education, I wouldn't be surprised if their IQ increased considering the quality of said education!

Why would they make this up? Detroit has nothing left but welfare and service industry income. How can you provide services to people who can barely put food on the table let alone pay the rent? The whole area is going down and fast. They just announced not too long ago that they would be forced to shut off services to half of the outlying areas surrounding Detroit. There is little to no tax revenue being generated in that area so how are they going to make a budget work? If they are cutting school funding the area is doomed because that means there is nothing left.

There is no way to hide failed liberal policies anymore. Its all going to come down as one. But the liberals will find a way to blame someone else other then themselves. Then we will have the vote for hope and change and the democrats will be thrown back into office repeating there mistakes made in the past

Say, I read a thread on here the other day that was a link to the Guardian (I believe) showing a pictorial of Detriot today and it's collapse. If someone knows where I can find that, would you point me in the right direction. I was telling my Step-dad about it. He's from Detroit and I wanted to show it to him.

I'm kinda new on ATS, so not terribly savvy at moving around this site yet.

Thanks...

Wait, found it all on my own (man I'm good!) I'll put the link here in case anyone else is interested. Peace...

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

Another resounding success of a Dept. of Edu copycat system.

Nevada isn't doing much better, but the fact is the more we provide through the state system the more we have to pay for it.

We're broke, so I'm expecting school shutdowns to start being talked about soon.

I started talking about the debt bomb years ago, the fuse is finally getting short enough to make people sweat so I'm not the crazy guy raving in the corner about debt anymore..

Now I'm proposing we stop feeding the beast. Our kids are dumber and the schools are closing anyway. You don't need a Weatherman to tell you which way the wind is blowing. Detroit is Americas dirty little secret. The 3rd world country created by 5 decades of corruption.

Michigan overall is a screwed little place wracked with debt, poor investment choices, and huge self serving bureaucracies that have sapped all the competitiveness and innovation out of the state... Education has had to endure some draconian level cuts to maintain the status quo for the states ruling class(Unions and Government officials), but at the end of the day we're talking about the same government that thinks bulldozing homes is the best way to help stabilize home prices.

Michigan is the WORST CASE SCENARIO. What's even more worrying is that it has much further to go. I'm not sure Michigan will be there much longer.

There may not be schools left in Michigan if the status quo is continued.

we have to halt our population growth or even get it to decline. Things would level out and improve.

I bet they will have NO problems hiring more cops, though, will they?

This is extremely troubling, and sad. Remember this: Kansas City to Close half its schools , which is just one example of the large number of schools getting closed.

That seems to be the norm now, and it really makes me angry: when in financial crisis the FIRST thing, it seems, to get cut/defunded/closed are the SCHOOLS. Education is the MOST important thing to a prosperous society, yet it is the FIRST thing to get the ax. Then, more cops are hired. Keep the people uneducated, ignorant, then hire cops to police the unrest and consequences of those actions. It's almost like intentional dumbing down of the people by taking away education then hiring cops to maintain the police state through the degeneration of society and the education systems.
I see it all the time: budget crisis, cut school, build a new police station, hire more cops. Guess you gotta police those people who, not getting a proper education, will now become *menaces* to society because their opportunities were cut. More cops always solves everything, right?

Why education first?!?!? That makes NO sense, and it will come back to bite this country on the backside when we deny the necessary services to maintain a prosperous society.

Education should be the LAST thing cut, not the FIRST.

What is happening in Detroit and in Michigan overall is not a product of population but of poor management of public resources. They spent like a teenager with their first credit card with a penchant for cute jeans and Boone's Farm.

Halting the population growth would create a even larger supply of already empty houses and buildings. With respect I don’t think any type of population growth or retarding will help this matter

Hey, I have an idea, throw other people's money at the problem. Time to redistribute that money from the states that have kept their heads above water. How dare they have conservative values and principles? They should all be the same! /s

What is the highest cost to the public schools? If you said the upkeep or the property, you would be wrong. It would be the teacher's PENSIONS.

Time for Michigan to file bankruptcy and start over. Maybe if they only spend what they bring in, this would solve the problem. Also, placing any government worker into a pension system that puts the public taxpayer as the debtor, should be outlawed.

Public unions should be outlawed. A flat across the board sales tax and nothing more. No income taxes, no property taxes, no other taxes. Time to go back to what worked. Constitutional government and NOTHING more.

Well considering it's Detroit Public Schools I'd say the children would get a better education if they entire school district was shut down.. it's a sad disgrace as it is anyways..

I'm sorry but your description of Michigan as a whole is utterly false. You are only describing Detroit and some parts of east michigan. West Michigan is full of rich people/conservatives and doing fine.Eric Prince just spent 10-20 million on his newly renovated Lake Macatawa mansion. And almost every rich person in Chicago summers over here as well. Not to mention the huge medical pot industry that has sprang up in less than a year. Thats just one step closer to industrial hemp production as far as I'm concerned. We export huge numbers of produce as well fruits. If we could stop the export of our water, we would be sitting pretty.

Stop letting facts get in the way of the right wing masturbation fantasy city, Detroit. An American city in ruins, and the right loves it, because its "liberals fault" and Detroit is full of black people.

Corpratism killed detroit, not black folks.Henry Ford built an empire around his buisness'. When he died, no one knew how do anything, and everyone began to merge because corprate folk thought it was the best thing to do(more monies...how could it go wrong?). Our ex governor, Ghranholm, failed multiple times at fixing the problem...such as losing a huge deal with VW, and several Japanese car companys as well. She did coax a huge Chinese solar panel company to set roots in east MI though...she at least got lucky a few times.
Detroits black culture also brought us Motown, and Techno. Raves came from MI, and spread worldwide too. I hear it's big in Europe.lol.
Oh, and we are an open carry state. We love guns and hunting.

I live about 25 miles from Detroit. It's like the cantos in Dante's Inferno; the closer you get to the center, the more gruesome the scene.

But honestly, there are other American cities with these horrors and problems. Detroit is just the first stop of the apocalypse beast, so naturally it's at a more advanced stage.

It will then travel on to Chicago and Milwaukee, eastward toward cleveland and Buffalo, southbound to Memphis and Atlanta. it will eventually consume every major American city.

Detroit will be sufficient warning. At least, it should be.

Get ready for Hell...

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

The State of Michigan has dug itself such a bad hole trying paper over the losses in Detroit and maintaining a welfare state so big that they will likely need a bailout from the broke Feds. Michigan Debt Clock For some real time numbers.

More than 20% of Michigan is on food stamps..

When it comes to economics there are no political solutions only mathematical ones. If you fall into the trap of politicizing economics you wind up with Michigan or Washington DC.
