This is info from a press conference currently happening so there is no link, you would have to be watching ABC news live to see it, for now.

Our foolish Govt has just announced BP has been given permission to start offshore exploration, with a view to drill in 2013, in several places including the Great Australian Bite (southern Australia).

When asked about the Deep Water disaster, the minister brushed it off, foolishly thinking we will do any better than the US Govt.

So here we go again, a criminal FOREIGN company has been given the rights to exploit OUR resources, a company we know couldn't give a F#*% about the environment, especially if its not their own land.

No doubt this will hit the websites soon, but the conference is only just finishing up. I cant believe how stupid & irresponsible this government is. If you are going to make such a dangerous decision at least give the rights to an Austrlian company you traiterous fools !!!!!

Im for more exploration and drilling untill we have free energy technology available to the public, you'll be complaning if the oil runs dry and your sitting at home without running water, electricity and no food at the shops.

Doesn't really matter what the people think or want, man.

Money talks. And its every government's favorite conversation.

All the countless deaths and illnesses, grief and heartbreak this company has caused already....

Australia is in such a bad state right now and to throw BP on them when by 2013 they still won't be over this devastating situation..

So much for the beautiful underwater life there

I does not really matter which company ownes it etc because it will be Australian workers doing the drilling. Do you not trust your own workforce?

Unfortunately thats all too true.

This Govt has the worst financial record of them all, & this is just another depserate attempt by them to try make up some of the tens of billions they have already wasted. Their motto is "spend spend spend, what do you mean think first ?"

This is why our whole world is falling apart. Leaders from all different countries make idiotic decisions. This is just another example of how we as humans are making our own destinies. Once again I am sick to my stomach

Either way we don't want to support that company.
Financially or morally.

just as a matter of interest to myself, is there ANY company that you would support?
If there is I await a reply with valid reasons.
If not then I would point out that by using fuel for transport, buying food from shops and turning on your lightbulbs or air con then you are very much so supporting the industry, with reservations I accept but supporting it all the same.

Seems this has been in the works since at least last September:

The deepest exploration drilling off South Australia's south-east coast that has ever been seen was endorsed overnight to begin construction in January as part of a multi-million dollar project.

President Petroleum will drill a three kilometre deep well outside Port MacDonnell in the hope of finding rich oil and gas deposits.

The 43-metre rig will have a live-in staff of 40 and will begin drilling in February.

The company's exploration manager, Griff Weste, says the site will run non-stop for almost a month-and-a-half.

"The rig is presently working up in Moomba in the far north-east of the state and these are highly specialised workers," he said.

"This is a high risk business, high risk, high reward. Usually the rates of success are one in 10 but I think it's better than that here."

edit to add: Who is President Petroleum? A subsidiary of BP or are there more than one company drilling there?

Here's some info about their Directors & Senior Management: www.presidentpc.com...

I dream of a future without oil dependency, as you expected, but would find a company with a more acceptable background less devastating.
I guess I want a lesser of all the evils.

Hopefully not as the following article states, the GBR is off limits (for now):

Oil spills
In the 1960s up to the 1970s, there was a growing speculation that the Great Barrier Reef is the entry point to a vast oil deposit and gas. That is the reason why in 1970, two Royal Commissions were assigned to explore and drill the Great Barrier Reef area for possible petroleum and oil. Today, oil drilling is banned on the Great Barrier Reef, though oil spills, that kill coral reefs, often occur within the area. A total of 282 oil spills happened in the Great Barrier Reef between 1987-2002.

Shipping accidents
Shipping accidents are also threats to the survival of the Great Barrier Reef, as several commercial shipping routes pass through the reef system. In addition, 20 groundings and 11 collisions were reported on the shipping route of the Great Barrier Reef from 1985-2001.
In addition to the shipwrecks, boats can destroy the reef when they throw wastes and other foreign objects in the water. Plus, ships release a toxic to the seawater that endangers both humans and marine organisms called the Tributyltin or TBT compounds -- used as an anti-fouling paint on ship hulls.

Thanks for the info!

For others that don't know this:

A Natural Wonder The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven wonders of the natural world, and pulling away from it, and viewing it from a greater distance, you can understand why. It is larger than the Great Wall of China and the only living thing on earth visible from space.

Once again the Corporate Government shows it's colors. There may be a moratorium on drilling on or near the GBR, but there are many possible problems that those of you that live in OZ have figured out.

The biggest one, as I see it, the Pacific Ocean floor in your part of the world is not the most stable. Drilling a deep well, find the "mother oil/gas lode"...what's to say that the damage done during the drilling would not be responsible for a possible "mother" of a shaker? Needless to say...any leak of oil in the pristine waters off OZ would be devastating to humans and ocean life. In fact...an "accident" the scope of that which the Gulf Of Mexico is dealing with messed with the gulf stream and currents which in turn, it is said has messed with the weather patterns. Imagine if such a thing happened in the great Pacific Ocean... 'nuff said.

All for the Greed of a bunch of business "men"...sad

There are so many alternative sources of energy other than fossil (no fossils in oil, btw) fuels...but they are all natural...and of course we all know if it's natural, owning it and branding it, is not done.
