3 U.S. Service Members Killed in Iraq

www.nytimes.com

At the Ghazlani Training Center, south of Mosul, American soldiers were training Iraqi forces Saturday morning when a trainee opened fire on his trainers, according to an Iraqi Army officer.

The exercise was meant to be conducted without live fire, said the officer, who was speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the news media, but the Iraqi soldier had stolen live ammunition for his AK-47 rifle.

The new year has not started off well for US Forces in Iraq. As everyone is talking about birds falling from the sky and fish washing ashore, the Tuscon Tragedy, partisan mortal combat, and Chinese stealth fighters. Another story that has fallen to the wayside in recent memory, but is still steaming along as it has when it was deemed more relevant by the MSM.

Last September the Iraq War became Operation New Dawn, and with name change it was followed by a posh ceremony of military convoys crossing the border into Kuwait. War was officially over and a modest force was to remain to advise and assist Iraqi Forces in the short term ahead of the scheduled complete withdrawal which is in the works for the near future.

So far this month, a total of 5 US military personnel were killed in Iraq, and since last year US military engagements have dropped to a trickle. Why an increase? How and why did this student smuggle live ammo into this US held facility, and blindside his mentors? Is this phenomenon widespread, and why has the media remained virtually silent on stories like this one and others from the past? A story trickles out here and there about service members being killed in what appears to be combat type scenarios, but the official statement is entirely something different. Just more smoking mirrors about a war that has never ended.

Iraqis are still dying, infrastructure is in disrepair, US forces are still being offed, and Iraq's prodigal son and thorn in the side of the US, Moqtada Al Sadr, has returned from holiday in Iran to incite the mob at his beckoned call as he had in the past. More going on over there than what the benevolent news media would like their viewers and readers to believe.

I thought Barack Obama said during the campaign that there was supposed to be a draw-down in Iraq and Afghanistan, and a hand-over to indigenous forces, that would prevent this kind of thing.

No, he said he would return troops home from Iraq but would remain in Afghanistan since "that's where Osama is hiding". What has happened is a decreased in soldiers in Iraq but those soldiers are being rerouted to Afghanistan instead of home.

As for the news media rarely reporting on this stuff, I think it is important that they don't. You don't want another large-scale anti-war protest in America, do you? Of course, we have priorities elsewhere - opium and oil.

As for the person who killed the soldiers - what do you expect? There is always going to be a bad apple who hates the U.S. and wants to kill some soldiers to send a message to the U.S.

May all the Gods bless all the unnecessary deaths from these unnecessary wars.

For all the US troops dead, there's about 100 dead Iraqi's no wonder that some will go nuts on them.

Yeah, not to mention thousands of more dead Iraqi police and troops. Why do Muslims love to kill other Muslims?

They have not conducted combat operations for a long time. Moreover, as it stands now they are in a support role, and are in the position as military advisers. So, your statement is a little off base at the present time. I only wanted to highlight that 3 US soldiers were killed, and that is unacceptable given their new role as advisers. I thought combat operations were over? Yet, these mentors are killed by hostile fire during a training session?

After the new designation and mission parameters, any and all deaths are unacceptable and should be called into question. The shooter was a nut trying to send a message or make a name for themselves. The military personnel want to get the hell out of there, but are there in the short term to ensure that Iraq can defend itself. There is no justification or rationalization for what that yahoo did. What a waste!
