It appears a patient (Jasper Lawrence) who had asthmatic and allergic reactions went to Cameroon to be infested with hookworm.
After his successful treatment he began selling the critters.
It appears now the FDA is on his case.
Any more info?

I remember hearing that tapeworms used to be sold as a lose weight type treatment

Well, it appears that Mr Lawrence stood on infested ground.
Africans have wizened to the concept.
But - does it REALLY help?

Well, I have no allergies at all at present.
It's almost uncanny.
But alas, with me, it's mainly roundworms.
If I don't stop them every 6 months they'll be crawling out my nose.

I've never heard of that, but I have heard that it's a good idea to have a couple inside you when you're in a "don't drink the water" locale

Opera diva, Maria Callas almost certainly infested herself with tapeworm, and lost considerable weight.
However, parasites can cause serious complications.
It is not advisable, and in western countries it is almost non-existent.
