I have been watching this, and this whole discarding process of throwing back the fish is absolutely insane. My question is, why dont the fishermen just fish half the amount of days? instead of throwing half the fish away.They would still catch the same amount make the same money but work for less time. Maybe Hugh will reveal in a mo?

when i was in Fiji people who grow up there and who live there- from fishermen to restaurant owners were angry because of asian boats which catch big tuna fish and put it into the tins. they cant feed their family so more, cause no fish left in the ocean.

Just feel sorry for the sea life, and people who live on the coast and their life depends on the fish.

Keeping those fish would do just as much harm as throwing them away does. The problem isn't the discard, the problem is commercial fishing itself. The entire industry revolves around over-harvesting and waste, from the boats all the way to the customer's plates (or food bowls; almost as much commercial catch goes to housecats as it does to humans).

A multi-year ban on commercial fish harvest would do far more good for the North Sea - or the Grand Banks, or the Gulf of Mexico, or anywhere else - than halting discard.

Yes it's the variety of fish that is the problem.

Nearly all fish and chip shops are geared towards selling cod. Supermarkets are geared towards only a few species of fish too.

I have grown up sea fishing with rod and reel and have tried a wide variety of fish on my dinner plate and I have no problem eating dogfish (known as rock in chip shops) dabs, plaice, and many others..

It is mindless to waste any good food..

If I had a boat and was out fishing as they do in the video, I would most probably take all the catch back to shore and sell it. Someone, somewhere would surely enjoy a fresh fish meal..

Hehehe well our chippy shops still sell hallibut and thats what i favour, though a good piece of rock cod or snapper is just as tasty.
The mixed bag of fish that the modern purse seins or net ships get,should and could be saved.
Though there is no market for it, there may be somewhere else....ie dogfish sells well in mexico, and other countries have their faves too.....
The world is too small to throw out good food.
The harvest from the sea is a bounty that we will be sorely missing in the near future.
It is a travesty to waste.
There are some rogue states which should be banned from the high seas though......
Without mentioning names, japan,portugal.and spain come to mind.Though SE Asia is no better, and their keepers standards are pretty lax.....
It is pretty much a done deal to have lots of dead fish that one cannot keep for economic reasons.This is because of the methods used in fishing.
IE drift netts with fine mesh which catch everything in their path....they trail for thousands of feet behind these ocean factory ships.
These factory ships have the perfect opportunity to over catch, and overfish.They can what they catch at sea and bring back finished product.frozen or canned.it is concievable that a ban on drift nets would help hugely.

I think that soon or later we will have no fish in your oceans and people will be satisfied.
