New LASER weapon to dazzle pirates on the high seas

Marauding pirates could soon find themselves up against a new long-range laser weapon, designed to leave them blinded, bewildered and all at sea. Although the laser will not necessarily repel determined aggressors, it should let them know that they have been spotted while still at a distance and that their quarry is ready for them

it should let them know that they have been spotted while still at a distance and that their quarry is ready for them

you know, i actually thought the same thing when i read this.

the article goes on and on about how if they try to use sun glasses it will make it worse, but all they need to figure out is that it takes a special color filter to block the beam.

im with you though on brute force....

..ready the long nines!!!

This is dumb. Enough of the nonviolent methods of control. A few bullets to the brain should do the trick.

Laser Smaser..........The only thing I think pirates should be dazzled with is a 25mm mini-gun spitting out rounds so fast as to-make it sound likes it's unzipping the sky. Thats dazzling.

Sure keep the lasers just in case but not as a stand alone deterrent. Pirates are highly adaptable predators. It's hard to adapt to a heavy rain of lead cutting your boat in half from a mile away. I think they would quickly learn not to approach ships that eat pirates.

Or maybe ... they should build a laser that burns the ship rather than blind the pirates.

That reminds me of the Ray gun which is supposedly used in Afghanistan. IT causes searing pain in individuals within the path. I wonder if they already have these outfitted on ships? I don't see why not.

Hmmm.. a ray gun? not so much. We use lasers in afghanistan that can reach amazing distances that are designed to completely disable the enemy with amazing precision. Different lasers for different uses. Some temporarily blind, some cause blackouts, some cause physical pain such as burning sensation, as well as my favorite which actually causes the person to become physically sick and uncontrolably vomit. ray guns, no. Awesome lasers, yes.

You can look up some specs on them on that site.

i have heard much about this “puke light” but didnt realize it was in laser form

whats the range on it?

i wonder if antivertigos or mj would circumvent its effect. or glasses with the right filter wavelength.

maybe i shouldnt be brainstorming this on the internet...

Indeed! If it were my ship, I'd prefer this solution:

According to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), based in London, 111 piracy cases, including failed attempts, occurred in that area in 2008, of which 42 vessels were captured. This year, 125 cases were reported as of June 1. The number of ships captured exceeded 25. Only two MSDF escort ships are in operation. There are a significant number of cases in which their operating schedule does not match the cargo ships' shipping schedules. There are growing concerns that that if the coverage of MSDF escorting is expanded, cases could occur in which Japanese ships are not covered.

As such, some shipping companies use services offered by a British crisis consultant firm. These services dispatch former Special Air Service members of the British Army to cargo ships only when they cruise off Somalia. Their duties are monitoring pirates and taking action in emergency situations. Customers expect that since they would also become hostages if the ship were captured, the British Navy would rescue the ship.
