Cant blame the Obama for picking a new best friend. after all what good are we as an ally when we keep giving away our navys ships for free, selling multi million pound war machines to other countrys for pennies, and getting rid of all our jet fighters. its insane. personally i think the only thing stoppping war in the distant future in the uk is our nuclear detterents, and obama is making everyone give those up too.

our troops may be good but we need to give them the best equpment possible, we CAN afford to keep all these things AND to upgrade from sub par guns and equipment. if the guys in charge of buying them werent so corrupt. anyone else see that panorama/horizon(cant remember wich ) documentary?

While this a diplomatic disaster of epic proportions, I see, in the midst of calamity, a wonderful opportunity for barack obama to mend his relationship with bill clinton.

why bill clinton, you ask?

because, when HILLARY Clinton whups Obama's skinny little ass for saying something this completely #ing stupid, he and bill will have something in common

Sorry guys but this thread is a complete waste of time. People are arguing and bitching at each other over for nothing.

The quote and source is the Daily Mail. The Daily Fail is arguably one of the most inflammatory and inaccurate newspapers in the world. More than any other it sells papers with shock headlines that push its own agendas.

Why not go to this site, and then start a thread on one of these headlines, it is effectively just as relevant.

Yeah, well good luck with that Obama.

You can have your special relationship.

The US has no more use for the UK any more.

They're already IN the middle east.

They already have the Patriot act.

They have already installed the fear of "global terrorism" into every man woman and child for a century to come.

The really interesting thing is to look at what the US needs form the French. That may give us a clue as where the next battle field will be.

My guess is Africa, Russia China and the US are going to battle it out for Africa's natural resources. France as a lot of sway in Africa.

A few pages back I linked and quoted from the White House, which posts Obama's speeches, just for verification. He did say it. I just don't think it means too much. I think if anyone else had been sitting next to him they would be special friends too. The US has been on a bit of a kiss ass diplomacy kick, and I think this was simply another case of that.

Once again proving how out of touch with Americans the bumbler-n-chief is on all matters!

On what planet is France the greatest ally of anyone - I heard they already had the surrender documents drawn up as part of any contingency plan.

I think if they could find someone to take it they'd surrender to the terrorists - just to be on the safe side.

"Proud to be English" are you? Well I am not proud to belong to the same nationality as someone who makes offensive generalisations about a whole people. i met many Americans while I was in the RN and they were great guys.

So button your ill-mannered lip!

I wasn't going to post this as there are more important things happening in the world like the Australian floods.

However I thought it deserved a thread.

I know it is from the DM so cannot attest to its veracity, but c'mon!

The French HATE America!

I think this is proof that obama is a rabid socialist who hates Britain.

I think he is very out of touch with the reality of British and American ties and the countries people he supposed to represent.

Maybe he fancies Sarkozy' wife? And loves how the *french* have just sold ships and other military hardware to his socialist Russian comrades?

Who knows?

Lets see how quickly the french come to their "biggest allies" aid when the shtf.

They will be too busy running the other way!

I think it's important to note that he talked about France being a strong ally while in a face to face meeting with monsieur Sarkozy, would possibly have been a little undiplomatic to say anything else?

Very shameful display by Obama.

Doesn't he think before he opens his mouth?

Or maybe he wants to destabilize the entire planet?

I think if there was a major war now days, aircraft carriers and some other war ships wont be much use any way, I thought selling them ships was the only smart thing the coalition have done.

That's a bit crazy considering if you came here to the states people would buy you drinks and welcome you to America. We would... (we wouldn't with most other foreigners but always with Brits.)

Americans in general love British even if you hate us.

American's at large hate the French!

In British terms... Obama saying the French are our greatest ally is a bunch of codswallop! He is in no way a personification of "Yanks" at large... No way!

Want to know what Americans really think of the French?!

Glad we could make something for you then.

Hi, Saturn, while I don't want to take away from the point of your original post which was well made, .com was never meant to mean American only, it was the first TLD or Top Level Domain name and used globally. It's only as time has gone on that .uk, .fr etc. have come into play to allow more granularity and .com has become more seen as an American site term. Many sites outside America still use it and will have region/country specific segments within one site rather than creating many.

Sorry for being a pedantic Billy no mates

France is our biggest ally, declares Obama: President's blow to Special Relationship with Britain

www.dailymail.co .uk

Barack Obama has declared that France is America’s greatest ally, undermining Britain’s Special Relationship with the U.S The President risked offending British troops in Afghanistan by saying that French president Nicolas Sarkozy is a ‘stronger friend’ than David Cameron. The remarks, during a White House appearance with Mr Sarkozy, will reinforce the widely-held view in British diplomatic circles that Mr Obama has less interest in the Specia
(visit the link for the full news article)

I could be wrong but I don't believe that President Obama ever said, "France is our biggest ally." I think I saw the interview in question and I just don't remember him saying that. What I do remember is the president saying something like; The U.S. did not have a stronger friend or ally than Nicolas Sarkozy or the french people. So to say the very least, the title of this thread is a little misleading.

Although, I would add the following in support of the president's statement; Wasn't it the French who came to our rescue and assisted in our victory over Britain during the American Revolution? Isn't the "mother" bank that supposedly is in control of the U.S. federal reserve, the Bank of England? Didn't the British government support and assist G.W. Bush in lying this nation into war with Iraq? (remember the downing st. memo?)

Just because right wing Bush supporters decided to rename french fries, "Freedom Fries" doesn't make France less of an ally than Britain. It just means that those right wingers were every bit a wrong as the president they supported.
