Violence erupted in the Iraqi city of Samarra today, killing 5 US soldiers, 2 Iraqi guardsm3n, and 3 civilians. In addition, 20 US soldiers were
injured along with 4 guardsmen and 20 civilians.
Insurgents detonated a carbomb and rained mortars on a military compound in Samarra, 60 miles north of Baghdad.
"It's probably the biggest attack there's been against one of our facilities for quite some time," said Master Sgt Robert Powell, a spokesman for
the 1st Infantry Division operating in the Samarra region. He said the casualties had been caused by a car-bomb attack, followed by a salvo of 38
