WAR: Five US Soldiers Killed in Samarra Mortar Attack

Violence erupted in the Iraqi city of Samarra today, killing 5 US soldiers, 2 Iraqi guardsm3n, and 3 civilians. In addition, 20 US soldiers were injured along with 4 guardsmen and 20 civilians.
Insurgents detonated a carbomb and rained mortars on a military compound in Samarra, 60 miles north of Baghdad.

"It's probably the biggest attack there's been against one of our facilities for quite some time," said Master Sgt Robert Powell, a spokesman for the 1st Infantry Division operating in the Samarra region. He said the casualties had been caused by a car-bomb attack, followed by a salvo of 38 mortar rounds, which caused the complex to collapse.

As Coalition forces evacuated the dead and injured, insurgents and citizens overran the military base. Looters carried off electronic equipment and other valuables.

The military reports they are maintaining control in the city despite the attacks and looting.
