North Korea is building and deploying intermediate-range ballistic missiles capable of hitting targets up to 4,000 kilometers away and has been testing a new main engine for its long-range ballistics missiles, the Daepodong-2, the Defense Ministry said yesterday.

The North has also constructed about 80 underground tunnels to disguise its buildup since the U.S.-led war against Iraq began in mid-March last year, the ministry said in its first confirmation of the North's buildup of missiles to hit long-range targets.

North Korea's moves were outlined to the National Assembly's Defense Committee in a report that said Pyongyang aimed to keep its military superiority to South Korea and foster an environment to reunify the divided peninsula based on its military power.
