What caused this? a prank? or something else?

Keilih Gates, a naturalist at Goldstream Provincial Park, said even if the dye used in the river was non-toxic, the mere fact that outside materials were poured into the water was a concern.

Here's the ticker they have no proof or evidence that it was a prank.

The river "momentarily" turned green?! Wow all of these events happening right around the 30th. Well sounds like there is a environmental imbalance.

The link gives no indication for the duration, nor the exact time, of the event. It could have been twenty minutes, could have been three hours, from the vague way they described it.

There is, apparently, a company that makes a dye just for this sort of purpose, because they do this same thing to the Chicago canal which runs through the city, every St. Pats day.

That is wow.. That can't be good for the environment what ever it is. It doesn't look like algae. Hopefully we'll know more in the coming days.

Someone i knew used 10 old military sea dye markers one time to turn 35 miles of a stream in northern Calif fluorescent green.

Fluorescein dye is harmless but will bring out every government agency to investigate.so you don't want to stick around to gloat at you work.

One of its more recognizable uses was in the Chicago River, where fluorescein was the used to dye the river green on St. Patrick's Day.

Around the US environmental groups put this dye into water just to get the government to test it for pollution.

PETA has used it to disrupt opening day of fishing season on rivers and lakes around the US.
as soon a the water turns green the government closes it to fishing till its tested and that sometimes takes days.

I always want to use it on a water fall in Calif.

We were discussing this a few days ago on a different day and I did some digging around.

Turns out it was ruled a prank. It isn't the first time it was done. Apparently they poured some sort of tracing dye into the water that is harmless to wildlife.
