Subversivemike, its true that the birds were spread over a one mile area , but its not true to say that because the birds were spread that way, that one single object was responsible. Theres no data to support or deny that theory of course, or any of the half way sound theories that have come up over this issue, which is whats so damnably mysterious about it.

I can't find an altitude, but they are ground-dwelling birds and observations note they tend to stay closer to the ground or low branches when eating or frightened, so I would guess normally, no more than a few hundred feet in altitude.

Yes, but there IS data, such as the total area the dead birds covered, that wasn't taken into consideration with any of the theories mentioned in this thread. The total area covered by dead birds can help tighten up or dismiss some of these theories.
