Now I know none of these would be useful in the event of an EMP attack of massive solar flare or anything that would knock out the electrical grid, but I was just got a new computer and was installing a bunch of apps for Google's Chrome browser and thought "Man, if I had apps for all the website I went to monitor things in my times of anxiety..."

BTW, where all all the program developers on here? Could you guys, within the bounds of legality, produce some "Survival Apps" ?

Apps I would like to see:

1. USGS Earthquake app: Instant update on earthquakes occurring worldwide.

2. Volcano app: once a volcano erupts, boom, you get an update.

3. Solar flare app: just like above.

4. GCP Dot app: regardless of its accuracy...

5. MUFON app: instant update on UFO sighting

6. Satellite app: shows which satellites will be above your house and at what time.

7. Meteor shower app: which meteor shower is occurring and where.

8. Terror level app

You get the idea.

What do you guys think? Good idea?

- Pop

I haven't got any idea of the apps, as a matter of fact I haven't even got the websites, could you please share the links
. Although, even with the links I personally could not be able to make you the apps, so I would just check on this thread to see if theres any on here. Also, I use Firefox 4, and personally prefer it over all other browsers I have tested (Chrome, IE, Opera, Safari, although Opera was very good too, seemed to have some features which Firefox lacked). So please, any app developer/searcher, could you get the Firefox apps too.

And we can throw in Safari while we are at it. I still use Firefox sometimes for familiarity, but Chrome is so fast, and Safari is so practical. Chrome is my new fav though.

Usually if the SHTF the first thing you will notice is that you have no electricity.

Not to shoot down your idea - I think it's great.
Other apps I'd like to have would include:
Military movements of any scale by region.
Severe highs/lows on the markets
Weather emergencies
Bridge/tunnel/road closures

I think what's important here is if we did get a warning for the TSHTF, how much of a warning would it be and what would we do with the time?
My priorities would be: to contact loved ones, set plans and meeting places and times
Check water and food stocks.
Check all other emergency equipment (lanterns, stoves, firearms etc)

LOL! I was trying to think how the heck does one continue to use an iphone/ipad after losing all power. Found an Eton radio/flashlight/charger thingy that includes a solar panel and a hand crank, so it can be used without batteries. This one also came with a USB plug, which also means that it will be able to recharge the old iphone. Now, how this will help when there is no cell service I have no idea. However, I will be able to play solitaire long after the SHTF unless I get jacked...

i make a bit on the side jailbreaking Iphones
so i can tell you that there are apps for most if not all of those
RSS and direct links should handle the rest

battery cases with solar recharging would be the way to go for SHTF scenarios
if the GPS satellites and other infrastructure are still working.
I'd invest in a few Ipads 64GB capacity and Iphones with a proper library
apps like theodolite for surveying
astronomy elements and stuff

all kept in EMP hardened storage

Good to see you have some form of EMP protection, you can have all the Apps in the world along with a life supply of batteries to power them but in the event of an EMP all this kit is useless.

Good info here: www.futurescience.com... along with countless other sources on the net. A homemade Faraday cage costs pennies to make but can make the difference in knowing whats happened and also having equipment that still works after the flash.

That said, the apps I have on my iphone are as follows and are in no particular order. I value all of them:

Navigation Apps:
Skobbler I have linked to the US version): itunes.apple.com...
Great software but relies on a cell signal so useless if these go down.

Memory Map GPS Based OS Mapping: www.memory-map.co.uk...
Not dependant on external signal/cell signal

Commander Compass for Iphone: itunes.apple.com...

Compass AR: navigationapps.com...
GPS Signal reliant

Rescue Knots: apps.su...
I know my knots but others may knot

Radiation Emergency Medical Management: itunes.apple.com...
Self explanitory but very very good.

Disaster Alert: www.pdc.org...
Cell signal dependant.

iEarthQuake: itunes.apple.com...

iMorseCode: itunes.apple.com...
Been a while since I last needed to remember the morse code, with this app you dont need to remember it all.

Also various other MetOffice and weather related apps.

Thats me, as above though; ni use if the equipment has been taken out my EMP or Solar storms - get protecting guys

1. USGS Earthquake app: Instant update on earthquakes occurring worldwide.

There are so many earthquakes happening all the time that your phone would never stop going off.

2. Volcano app: once a volcano erupts, boom, you get an update.

www.cnn.com search for volcano, it will give you the update. If you are outside and cannot see it then there is probably nothing to worry about.

3. Solar flare app: just like above.

If it is a major solar flare than your phone would not work deafeating the purpose of the app. If it is a lesser one it would not matter and you wouldn't notice it anyways.

4. GCP Dot app: regardless of its accuracy...

?????

5. MUFON app: instant update on UFO sighting

What does that have to do with survival? Mufon reports are about as valid as the grey area forum.

6. Satellite app: shows which satellites will be above your house and at what time.

The term above is very relative, your phone would go off non-stop as there are many many satellites "above" your house at any given time.

7. Meteor shower app: which meteor shower is occurring and where.

What does this have to do with survival?

8. Terror level app

It is always yellow unless it is a holliday then it is orange or red.

I think the point of this thread is to show what the poster feels is important, not to slate and put down people suggestions

Actually Kayzar, I think we have both read in between the lines. I too have re-read the OP thread and it seems he is asking if any the apps listed are available or could they be written and not what apps do we currently run.

I shall to proceed to remove my foot from my mouth and am more than happy to assist you with yours if you require hehe
