Suicide by Pesticide: India's Hidden Climate Change Catastrophe

www.commondreams.org

"Every suicide can be linked to Monsanto," says Ms Shiva, claiming that the biotech firm's modified Bt Cotton caused crop failure and poverty because it needed to be used with pesticide and fertilizers. The Prince of Wales has made the same accusation. Monsanto denies that its activities are to blame, saying that Indian rural poverty has many causes.

Beyond any argument - though no less politically charged - is the role of the weather in this story. India's climate, always complicated by the Himalayas on one side and turbulent oceans on the two others, has been particularly unreliable

Another HUGE tradgedy that goes under reported.

Nearly two-hundred thousand farmers in India have commited suicide in the last 10 years alone!

That is an EPIDEMIC.

Now this article's primary focus is upon shifts in the weather, but notice a familiar name popping up in relation to problems with the farming industry?

M-O-N-S-A-N-T-O

More of their wonderful products being forced down the farming industries throats, then not working when their tandem of poison pesticides are not used in conjunction with them.

Regardless of the cause behind this destruction and suffering, these are good people who need to get cut a break somewhere. Hopefully Mother Nature or their own gov will help them so that this mass suiciding doesn't continue on.

Truly heartbreaking.

200,000 people killing themselves is somehow funny to you?

Boy do you have one twisted sense of humor.

Regardless of WHAT may be the cause, this is no laughing matter when people are suffering and killing themselves.

The people dying is not the laughing matter.

Oh the contrary, blaming all those deaths

on global climate change, and Monsanto

is the laughing matter..

Have a good one...

I must say I have never seen this much retroactive backpedaling in posts in quite some time. Pathetic

And your reasoning behind this statement? Wait, lemmie guess..."Four legs good, two legs bad," erm, or rather, the modern version: "business always good, regulation always bad." Your corporate masters have trained you to sing well, little bird. Just keep up the cheery song until business and government merge completely into a single entity, and then, just like the creatures in Orwell's Animal Farm, you will be taught to sing "four legs good, two legs better" and you will forget the lyrics had ever been any different.to begin with.

Both government and business can be, and are, harmful to your status as a free, healthy, and realized human being. But so many people have been doing the Animal Farm Singalong for so long now that in most circles this simple and rather commonsense fact is tantamount to blasphemy. The left will call you right and the right will call you left, and the great Wurlitzer of deliberate misdirection will play on.

You are laughing at the OP as if you were unaware of the problems caused to farmers all over the world by Monsanto.

As it is you are all alone out there on that limb. I wouldn't expect much company out there anytime soon.

Thats not the concern...

The problem here is BLAMING Monsanto
for the suicides of these farmers.

Do you have proof Monsanto is the reason for this?

Or blaming climate change for the suicide

where is your proof?

Indians always commit suicide. Just look how many students there commit suicide for not scoring well on exams.

That's because they want to do well and land lucrative jobs. In contrast just look how many students in the US of A go on vacations after not scoring well in exams!! No wonder American jobs are being outsourced to India!

No, people don't commit suicide because they want to do well...

They do it because they fear doing poorly....

That's a big difference

Fear is the mind killer

Vandana Shiva says this, eh? Not surprising, I've studied her before and she is clearly one of the world's leading intellectuals on environmental manipulation, corporate exploitation (especially of India), conflict over water reserves, and the "precautionary principle". She definitely knows what she is talking about.

Monsanto GM crops were never made to grow in climate like India.

They are only suited for areas that have the right rainfall that is dependable.

Global warming/Climate Change has nothing to do with India's problem.
Its ENSO, El Nino Southern Oscillation.and the fact that large areas of the land in india are only good for subsistence food farming and not for growing large cash crops.
www.knmi.nl...
www.scidev.net...

Telling subsistence farmers that they can make a lot of money without having the skills or water supply to grow these crops is going to cause major problems.

Monsanto GM crops were never designed to be grown by subsistence farmers they are only meant for use by big agro businesses on large farms.

Maybe all those "farmers" commiting suicide are doing it because the Indian government just stole thier family land, built a mega damn, and flooded thier lively hood.
Then to make it worse, they are moved to almost non airable land, in even smaller quantiy than they previously used to live on.It's more of a silent genocide by the ruling indian caste....GMO seeds just also happen to not work well in the non-farmable land they get moved upon.

You don't have to google to much to find stories of them screwing over farmers in America. Their copyrighted crops end up blowing seeds in your field...they find you with fields of their crop growing in with your crops.....That's when the Fed's role in and slap you up shaking you down for money for Monsato.

Seriously, do some googling. There's lots of stories on that Evil company which is Federally endorsed. Guess who's sponsoring the Federal 4H program?.....Monsato.

They commit suicide over anything that brings hardships or the slightest shame to them.

For a culture that projects control over their ego they usually can't handle very well any blows to it. Look at honor killings and so forth.
