You are forgetting the 20-30% in yearly taxes that government takes from that $24,000 figure. And if you do own a home, average property tax bill $1132 across the USA. As well as the 1560$ in gas to run one vehicle for a year(not counting car maintance).
I work at a food bank ><
you know it's funny...we've been seeing more and more white middle class looking people lately...
But yet we still send food to third world countries and are struggling to feed our own,,,,very shameful.

Eventually, we need to rethink our economy and of course, change it.

This doesn't even happen in places like China because people know how to save their money.

Actually Taiwan does have a food stamp program if you view the article here:
"Updated Saturday, January 24, 2009 9:24 am TWN, The China Post news staff
Food stamps given out to Taipei, Kaohsiung needy
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taipei and Kaohsiung city governments have started distributing food vouchers to families that need immediate financial aid. The opposition Democratic Progressive Party wanted the central government to adopt the same practice for the whole nation."

...not to be harsh, I know 22,000 for a family of four is hard, but it is definitely do-able - even without government help. Been there. Done that.
I'm sure you have, as have many other members here. But this story is about the middle class - think debt-load, and people trying to hang on to their homes, pay bills and avoid bankruptcy.
SAMPLE BUDGET ............ Month ................. Year
Rent or mortgage ................ $1,200.00 .............. $ 14,400.00
Utilities ............................. 300.00 .............. 3,600.00
Minimum Charge Card Pmts. 500.00 ............... 6,000.00
TOTAL ............................................................ $ 24,000.00
So let's play - where ya gonna cut $2000. - never mind find money for food?
Numbers don't lie (although 500 for credit cards a month is a lot). Thing is, if you're no longer making enough money to live in your house you have to move. There are lots of subsidized housing units available for low-income families, where that 1200 a month can turn into something much more manageable. Same with utilities, there are plenty of programs that can drastically reduce what you pay in utilities based on what you earn... and sometimes credit card payments will have to not be made if it's a choice between that and food.
In the end, though, it's all about survival. Anyone in the situation to stand in line for free food has my sympathy.

The Christian in you says you shouldn't expect thanks, that charitable acts have no reward in this mortal world. But it'd be nice after working 3 hours for someone to say "thank you". But na, never are those words uttered. And the more you do for them, the more they expect. But dare challenge them on their drug/alcohol dependance, their irresponsible behaviours (spawning child after chid after child, with no thought whatever for the consequences) and you'll get an absolute mouthful ... "it's none of your business" or "I'm going to complain".
And complain they do. About a charity, the sole purpose of which is to give food, shelter, medical treatment & clothing. It's the most thankless task ever. I'd encourage everyone to try it though, it's a total eye opener to how craven and perverse the social security & care services are in this country.
That's my experience from UK-land.
