An international group of scientists are aiming to create a simulator that can replicate everything happening on Earth - from global weather patterns and the spread of diseases to international financial transactions or congestion on Milton Keynes' roads. Nicknamed the Living Earth Simulator (LES), the project aims to advance the scientific understanding of what is taking place on the planet, encapsulating the human actions that shape societies and the environmental forces that define the physical world. "Many problems we have today - including social and economic instabilities, wars, disease spreading - are related to human behaviour, but there is apparently a serious lack of understanding regarding how society and the economy work," says Dr Helbing, of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, who chairs the FuturICT project which aims to create the simulator

This project seeks to simulate many events and actions taking place on the planet Earth. Hopefully, if the process goes well, Scientist can discover trends in the progression of humanity and its' effect upon the Earth. With the creation of such a bold project, we may be able to "predict" how we may change the planet and map out alternate ways to cause as little collateral damage as possible as we progress in our technology and infrastructure.

This project brings up a question. What are the chances that such a simulated world, such as the one that we will soon create, could be one just like our own; a technological construction. It is a intriguing thing, our existence. What created us, how did we come to be. Do we buy the story of the Red Shift Blue Shift expansion contraction theory, or do we look towards the metaphysical for our origins. Now, we have another strange and curious possibility, a man made world.

Could we simply be creations, simulations of some beings looking to find trends and patterns in their existence? Could we be nothing more than the creation of scientists and not real, living breathing beings? Would the fact that we are a simulation cheapen our existence in any way? Such questions arise as we develop the technology to create such a world for our own needs. We must not shy away from these questions, and we must explore the possibility, no matter the answer.

Other than the speculation, what do you all think this project will reveal? How do you think it may help humanity properly progress while evolving on the planet Earth?

Kewl attempt. But I don't see it doing very well and being eventually abandoned. We are after all talking about a VERY intricate and complex system with a intricate and complex system within a intricate and complex system that we by and large know very little about save it's effects.
