Egyptian bus full of schoolgirls overturned by flood; 15 die

FLOODWATERS caused by torrential rains swept a bus packed with 77 schoolgirls and their teachers off a highway in the country's south, killing 15 people, most of them students.

Poorly equipped rescue workers and local residents struggled to save those on board the bus, which overturned late on Wednesday in a deep trench created by strong flood currents along the highway leading to the city of Minya, 200km south of the capital Cairo.

The last two survivors were pulled out of the water in the early hours of today, a police report said.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing bodies of young girls

The dead included an ambulance driver who had rescued 20 of those on board the bus before the floods swept him away and he also drowned, the report said.

The schoolgirls and their teachers had been on a trip to Minya and were returning home to the town of Assiut when the accident took place.

According to the police report, survivors recounted that the bus driver had stopped to have a closer look at the surrounding terrain, inundated with torrential rains and flooding, when the water suddenly swept them away.

Egypt's southern region, where village houses are built of mud bricks and the roads are poorly maintained, was heavily affected during the rains and bad winter weather earlier this week.

What is with this weather? It seems we on a global rainy season? Whats going on? It is very tragic to hear this.

A 'bus full of school girls' ?

... not a bus full of extremists... or poverty stricken egyptions.... or prisoners or war... or criminals...

School girls.

Great.

This time of year is in fact rife with extreme weather events in warmer climates. There is nothing particularly unusual about the flooding and so on that has occured this year. What is unusual is how closely packed together these various flood events are in terms of thier chronological placement, but other than that, theres nothing new here.
This of course is a tragedy however, and we should not allow delusion and fear to take away from the fact that fifteen families lost loved ones in this incident, and that this is no doubt one of many fatal incidents caused by the epic inflow of water to the region.
May the dead have rest, and the living have comfort in this dark time.

What a stupid thing to say. This isn't the Crusades. People died and you take it as revenge (or "karma")?
