"These are our key centres in the brain's 'rewards' circuit,
they provide pleasurable rewards to the brain using the neurotransmitter dopamine;
but they usually do that for biologically important functions such as eating or reproducing.

So somehow, listening to instrumental music; a very abstract activity,
is accessing the very same brain structures as behaviour important for our physical survival and our reproduction."

This is a talk given by Dr. Aniruddh Patel as part of the "Grey Matters" series.
He talks of how only in the last few years have scientists taken research into music seriously despite it being of concern/interest to people like Plato since 400 BC. These new studies are PROVING the power of music & rhythm over us.

There are a few very important points discussed about WHY our physiology is so intrinsically affected & co-dependant on music & that as we haven't evolved 'out' of those needs, it's explained just why it is important to listen to music and more importantly, MOVE to music, dance.

As if people actually need an excuse to dance, or to have fun, or enjoy music - now you have one, and its not an excuse, its a very real scientific reason to do so, it's good for your health, and as far as your brain is concerned, its just as important as food or sex.

Finally, don't forget that we are the only known creature in the entire known universe that have this relationship with music, we are the only ones who can interact with it this way, create it, be moved by it..

Its more special than you may realise

There is a lot of valuable & reletively unknown information in this presentation & I encourage everyone to check it out..

Happy Holidays!

I realized this recently. I used to listen to music a lot earlier. It is good for the mind and soul as it helps in dealing with stress and anxiety. But for some reason, I stopped listening when I got busy and now I have resumed listening to music again. It is something that keeps you going when the monotony gets to you. Normally I listen to radio to keep up with the latest but sometimes I listen to my own playlist of favorites.

I knew somehow from highschool who never listened to music, had no favourite bands and no interest in it whatsoever. I finally managed to find out he enjoyed the music from the video games he played...

I still wonder about that kid sometimes...

While I am trying to avoid this thread delving into 'good/evil music' territory, I do want to mention that one of the things the information in the video above expresses is the importance of being selective with what you allow yourself to 'absorb'.

When something has such a powerful effect on your body,
you want to be sure the experience is beneficial, not detrimental.

There is nothing wrong with serving up pain on a platter so to speak,
but there's a difference between authentic artistic expression,
and private agenda driven money generating bollocks.
hope that makes some kind of sense to someone...

Think of it this way,
if you watch what you eat and who you sleep with, knowing what you now do after watching the video, why wouldn't you also take just as much care with what you listen to?

People who don't watch what they eat are at risk of becoming fat & unhealthy.
People who sleep with lots of hookers are liable to catch STD's...
what happens to people who listen to the music that's spoon-fed to them by corporations?

Just thinking out loud...

I think it's less about "good/evil" music, in any moral sense, and more about the kind of vibrations the music gives off--both the physical and metaphysical. Your mind and body simply respond differently to different types of frequency vibrations, and of course each person responds in their own way. I could listen to a piece and come away from it with negative energy, while someone else could listen to the same thing and have a totally different experience. It's all about knowing how you react to different energies.

Here is an excellent example combination,.
sushi,. raw vegies
Enigma soundtrack, principles of lust
and begin your entertainment,.
the sushi and raw vegies supplie many needed nutrients for hours of enjoyment
the music of Enigma,. well listen to it during the act and your mind will tune into your mate,.
Awesome stuff,.
of course a little wine is an added enjoyment also,.

Oh and to reference the video,.
the parrot that like classical and guitar music?
Though I dont doubt that any bird wouldnt like music, the parrot
seems to be the smarter of the bunch,.
I think the parrot in both cases, as it is a reflective species,. may have been simply mimicking the singer.
rather than enjoying the music,.

What men love: Food, Sex and Music.

What women love: Dialogue, Romance and Music.

Anyone disagree?

because that was true & funny,

But to add to that, the opinion that women love dialogue & romance over food & sex doesn't apply because we're talking about dopamine. Dialogue & romance haven't been shown to cause the rewards centre of the brain to release dopamine.

I 'get' what you (dark ghost) meant though.

Thanks for posting

Dopamine can be released from a few different reasons,.
If romance can trigger the same feeling,. like "foreplay" the act is just as real.
like a dream can cause "o"s.
It is a chemical release on a call button

that was a tremendously LAME thing to do man, I have funk-loads of music of my own I could promote here but I don't because thats not the point of this thread and to do so would be completely off topic. I hope the mods catch you for that, I've seen you promo your stuff on a bunch of other threads around this site, you didn't have to do it here too.
