Martians building canals for the ice ... we all knew that or doubted it
many picture of Mars have similar structure that people say are tubes or canals
maybe the canals were renovations to make their bases more huge then they already are
for what purpose ... imagine now .. it was 100 yrs ago that he noticed them
now on Mars there is canals everywhere .. to prepare for what ?

this news is confirming our doubts that they have underground bases and there is a high possibility of ice

On August 27th, 1911 the New York Times Sunday magazine ran an article entitled “Martians Build Two Immense Canals In Two Years”. Astronomer Percival Lowell had been studying the Red Planet and sketched what he saw, in this case, a growing complex of apparent canals on the Martian surface. There was even a nice little story that went along with this canal-building alien civilization theory. Lowell said, “The whole thing is wonderfully clear-cut,” that the Martian civilization was dying and they were building canals to reach the water ice in the Martian poles.

It turns out he was right about the water ice, but there’s no trace of this canal-building race on Mars… in fact there’s little trace of anything biological on the Red Planet. So apart from a few historic anecdotes, there’s still no life on Mars. The search continues.

Canals a thousand miles long and twenty miles wide are simply beyond our comprehension. Even though we are aware of the fact that … a rock which here weighs one hundred pounds would there only weigh thirty-eight pounds, engineering operations being in consequence less arduous than here, yet we can scarcely imagine the inhabitants of Mars capable of accomplishing this Herculean task within the short interval of two years. — Excerpt from the 1911 New York Times article.

I'm not sure why you've never heard this before. The Percival Lowell story is quite infamous and well-known.

The "canals" he saw are thought by many to be his eyes playing tricks on him -- after hours and hours of staring at the relatively small image of Mars through his telescope, his mind could have been literally "connecting the dots" and creating the straight-line canals connecting dark features on mars, even though those canals did not exist. It is widely believed that it was just an optical illusion.

While this idea excited the public, the astronomical community was skeptical. Many astronomers could not see these markings, and few believed that they were as extensive as Lowell claimed. As a result, Lowell and his observatory were largely ostracized. Although the consensus was that some actual features did exist which would account for these markings, in 1909 the sixty-inch Mount Wilson Observatory telescope in Southern California allowed closer observation of the structures Lowell had interpreted as canals, and revealed irregular geological features, probably the result of natural erosion. The existence of canal-like features would not be definitively disproved until Mariner 4 took the first close-up pictures of Mars in 1965, and Mariner 9 orbited and mapped the planet in 1972. Today, the surface markings taken to be canals are regarded as an optical illusion.

If the canals were there, I think others would have seen them since, through both telescopes and space probes. Humans have sent many probes to Mars that can see features that have been there for millions of years -- you would think they could see canals made 100 years ago (or 55 years earlier, in the case of the Mariner spacecraft).

The story of Percival Lowell is an interesting one, nevertheless.

Percival Lawrence Lowell (March 13, 1855–November 12, 1916) was a businessman, author, mathematician, and astronomer who fueled speculation that there were canals on Mars, founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, and formed the beginning of the effort that led to the discovery of Pluto 14 years after his death. The choice of the name Pluto and its symbol were partly influenced by his initials PL.

For the next fifteen years he studied Mars extensively, and made intricate drawings of the surface markings as he perceived them. Lowell published his views in three books: Mars (1895), Mars and Its Canals (1906), and Mars As the Abode of Life (1908). With these writings, Lowell more than anyone else popularized the long-held belief that these markings showed that Mars sustained intelligent life forms.[7]

His works include a detailed description of what he termed the 'non-natural features' of the planet's surface, including especially a full account of the 'canals,' single and double; the 'oases,' as he termed the dark spots at their intersections; and the varying visibility of both, depending partly on the Martian seasons. He theorized that an advanced but desperate culture had built the canals to tap Mars' polar ice caps, the last source of water on an inexorably drying planet

Anyone know if this guy is legit .. its actually the first time i hear of him
and this news was release in 1911 ... somebody wanted to hide him from being popular

you might be right .. his eyes was maybe playing tricks but his theory seem credible
the best place to live on mars would be underground since you cant live outside

why would the martians build thousand of mile of tubes ... when they can curve them

what is the difference between modern telescope and his .. his telescope wasnt controlled
all the most powerfull telescope are usualy made or controled by astronomers who are controlled by the government .. look nasa how many pictures they had to censors (blur)
Mars is huge and its still very hard to tell if something is naturaly made or not

look the national hero thread .. they tried to descredit the astronauts to
but the guy made the front page in 1911 .. they would never allow neil armstrong to be the front page speaking of secret moon base and that they had warning not to come back

The "canals of Mars" were first "discovered" by Giovammi Schiaparelli in 1877. He thought he saw lines on the Martian surface, which he thought were "channels" of some sort. Unfortunately the Italian word he used, canali was translated into English as the word "canal," suggesting that they were artificially constructed. Many legitimate astronomers did claim to be able to see the canals, but they were never photographed. The "canals of Mars" became a popular romantic trope during the "Golden Age" of Science Fiction. Percival Lowell was a wealthy amateur astronomer who built a large refracting telescope on a mountain top near Flagstaff, Arizona, expressly for his observations of Mars. This observatory eventually discovered the minor planet Pluto; a name chosen to commemorate Percival Lowell's initials!

The canals were an illusion, but a great one!

in conclusion do you beleive there is some aliens base on Mars ?
with the face of mars and the pyramids and other structure
canals included ... Mars seem really habited

I won't speculate as to what the first archaeologists to visit Mars might find, but most of the "artifacts" that people think they see in photographs taken by automated probes appear to be little more than wishful thinking. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if evidence of simple organisms, possibly even multi-cellular organisms, doesn't turn up sooner rather than later. Life seems to be able to survive just about anywhere.

No, the news confirms your doubts. You're not speaking for the masses to use "our". Speak for yourself!

A similarly interesting story to this one is that of the Baigong pipes in China. What makes these so wondrous is that the materials used in order to build them (ignoring the fact that they are stuck in a mountain in China, which is just impossible to do without someone knowning about it) outdate the time in which they were built. Amazing, but that's not all. There is no evidence to suggest that, at any point within our existence, there has been any civilisation present in that particular area that could've even built them.
