I'd say the smiling face an inch down and to the left of your supposed 'dome' is more interesting.

I know pareidolia and all but that face is creepy and there's another one directly across from it. Could this be the remains of an ancient statue? Probably not but it looks cool.

I see the dome you're talking about and it looks out of place, but it's so far away it could be anything.

Blah. I'm more interested in why all pictures of Mars are sanitized in black and white.

Anyone seen the Jose Escamillia film 'Moon Rising'?

There's much more to Mars than rocks...

Yeah, the high resolution photograph only makes me see more faces as well. Ha

Just to remind folks, its sort of in our nature to see faces in things, rocks, clouds, the moon, that pile of clothes in your bedroom when you were a kid...

Not having a go at anyone honest, just saying its sort of built in to us all.

I like it myself.

Maximum regards and holiday/Christmas positive cheer to all.

The photos are in shades of grey because it's a more versatile method.

The panoramic cameras on the rovers have 6 different filters for each camera (left and right) and another filter (753 nm) that is common to both cameras and that is used to take stereoscopic images.

With all those filters, ranging from the infrared to the ultraviolet, they can see how the different materials reflect different wavelengths, giving an idea of their composition.

If they had only a colour camera they would not be able to see how things look at different wavelengths and lots of information would be ignored.

With this system they can also get colour photos, they just have to take photos with the right filters.

The surface of the unknown object appears abnormally reflective IMO. Unless its surface is highly polished, its unlikely that this is just a rock. Great find OP...S&F

It's not more reflective than some areas of other brighter rocks, but that's only for that (infrared) filter.

Using the green filter doesn't show such a bright surface.

Edit: may a false colour image will help.

Funny how even in the higher res. I still see the face. I know it's just my mind's eye interpreting things, but still fascinating.
