ETA - Sonjah - sorry to hear that you got Desert Fever. I had it once and it was wicked bad! And since you say you are an "old woman" - how about a pic of "Auntie Em" from the Wizard of Oz for an avatar? Works for a "midwestern" theme also.

Yes, we were living near Bakersfield--Central Valley--at the time. I was clueless about the hellish fever, and with my passion for gardening, and planting hibiscus...well, I was digging around too much...and then, BOOM!

Auntie Em? Ummm...not quite that old yet...I'll just leave it as 30-something...but so many younger posters it seems from when I first signed on here at ATS....

Oh and not to scare you - but if you've just been here a short while - wait til summer hits. Hayfever FEST! YARG!
I should go scout for a pollen pic to use as a future summer avatar

I grew up in the SE; infamous for hayfever/pollen so hopefully my immune system will have it all in check? I dunno...If not, then I guess I'll be contributing to big pharma...unless the local honey works....

It's really not so bad here, once you get used to it. I live in Chicago, BTW, not too familiar with other midwestern areas.

Ah, we are practically neighbors then. I live right outside of Chi-town, on the IN side. My husband bought a manufacturing facility to "flip" and that's why were here....

One thing that may remind you of Cali is to tour the Great Lakes. There are many excellent beaches and you can even go surfing.

Well if I am around by then, I will. thanks for the suggestion. You must be psychic, how do you know I like to surf? Lake Michigan for surfing? I will have to see/do it to believe it!

How coincidental. I used to work as a mechanical engineer and am interested in real estate also. How weird. I've likely been through most industrial spots and facilities in NWI.

You and family might be interested to take some architectural tours also. This is THE architecture capitol of the world!

If you're in NWI (that's North West Indiana if you're not familiar with abbreviations yet) - this is THE perfect spot for surfing. Calumet harbor is da bomb! Especially in winter. Well, as long as you don't mind surfing among industrial waste
There is another spot over there called "Wolf Lake" which is big for surfing and parasailing. In the video I posted they reference the "Third Coast Surf Shop" - you can look them up on the net, or look up "Great Lakes Surfing" in general - plenty of info to be found.

If you are interested in the paranormal and/or UFOs - the UFOs do love Michigan! Another thing you might want to look into. MI is very scenic and a big vacation spot too. Beautiful scenery. Maybe that's why the UFOs like it- they go there for a holiday

Easy drives to great beaches from where you are - Indiana Dunes, and Warren Dunes in MI (this is in lower MI and shouldn't take more than an hour to get to.) Google them. I go to these spots all the time, even in winter. Gorgeous.

Like the new avatar!
And "30 something" isn't old. I'm "40 something" - I got my pic on here somewhere - people think I'm 25. Muahahahaha! Yeah. OK - if you say so

Besides surfing and etc - if you are that close to Chi - you gotta come here - there's so much to do. Shopping on Michigan avenue - better than Rodeo Drive! The North Side, Wrigleyville - top notch entertainment, clubs, more shopping. Boystown - that's the gay area - more shopping, more clubs, super fun people, you'll make lots of new friends.

Take the kids to Brookfield Zoo - they will love it and right now they have the "winter lights" or whatever they call their winter Xmas thing.

Nothing wrong with 'downtown' or the Rush Street area - but it's kind of a tourist trap and frequented by the fakest of fake. Google "Viagra Triangle" - you'll have some great laughs.

Get out and see things, you might find yourself falling in love with this place! I've returned twice. There's lots to do, and crazy weird people here. I know, I'm one of them

I'm going to try to put another vid here, not so good at it, but I will try -

BTW - any questions on the area in general (I am somewhat familiar with NWI also) - don't hesitate to ask here or PM me
Best of luck with your business ventures!

While I'm editing for typos - yeah, I know, I should work for the tourism board or something. But hey, I just LOVE this place!!!

edit on 24-12-2010 by Whiffer Nippets because: Got the vid going, still can't type though LOL figures...
