“We must ask ourselves what we can do to repair as much as possible the injustice that has occurred. We must ask ourselves what was wrong in our proclamation, in our whole way of living the Christian life, to allow such a thing to happen.”

“We are well aware of the particular gravity of the sin committed by priests and of our corresponding responsibility,” he said in his message to the leaders of the church.

A couple of items (above quotes) from the speech the hate mongers failed to include in their dialogue for obvious reasons.

When a person hates a class of people so much, they are willing to resort to spinning facts, taking quotes out of context in such a way as to mislead or just plain lie to harm them, they become the definition of the word "Bigot". The hate is such that honesty, integrity and truth no longer matter to them, only the hate and hurting the object of their hatred matters. When that object is an entire class of people such as Christians, numbering over a billion people, those intoxicated with their irrational hatred and bigotry, become themselves a danger.

I not Catholic and do not know the Pope or what is in his heart, but in this case it's clear his words have been twisted to be used as a weapon of bigotry and hate.

–noun
a person who is utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion.

Even though there is some difference in the meaning of the words "Bigot" and "Racist", they both refer to an unreasonable hate directed towards a group or class of people. In reality the individuals practicing such hate are cut from the same cloth.

Shame we see this level of hate practiced so often and so freely here on ATS. But then ATS is a microcosm of the world I suppose.

2 The so-called pope is crap - and all the other popes are crap.
3 The cardinals in the vatican are hugely rich.
4 The vatican is totally corrupt.
5 To all catholic believers - please, get out of the vatican.

1) How rich is the Vatican and yes, btw, I do see the Vatican saving dying people. Would you like a few links to Catholic hospitals and hospices?

2) Something to back that up please?

3) Really? How rich are they?

4) Something to back that up please?

5) This I can agree with, well for the most part. The Vatican is not large enough to hold all the Catholic believers. If they were all cramped in there it would be horrible. C'mon people, elbow room is important.

This thread is chock full of idiocy.

1) The Pope did NOT say that it was normal.

2) The Pope did NOT mention nations, he mentioned societies.

3) If the Pope did NOT make statements such as was made in the Christmas address he would be condemned for being callous, uncaring and out of touch. Make a statement that includes claims of culpability and how evil is objective as opposed to subjective and you are condemned. Make no statement and you are condemned. Nice.

this is truly shameful and is why I do not call myself a Catholic; the article said it best when they said that the church is more concerned about 'self-preservation', I mean just look at the Catholic Church's acts during WW 2, they kept their mouth shut & stayed alive! that's not a true follower of Jesus Christ

THIS JUST IN DimensionalDetective declares "chlid porn 'normal'"! WHAT A SICKO.

Thats basically what you did with this thread, I'm an atheist but this is just dumb you clearly took the statement out of context and just ignored what he said before it to fit some agenda.. Moronic.

Kiddy porn was available in porn shops in L.A. the mid 70's. I saw it up on the wall racks with my own eyes. I was shocked at the time and no, I did not look at them.

Here is more from the 70's..

1977, a French petition against age of consent laws was addressed to the parliament calling for the abrogation of several articles of the age-of-consent law and the decriminalization of all consented relations between adults and minors.

This, and even nowadays child porn is too accepted in places like Japan. If you think thats not true at all, just google "lolicon" or go to a "hentai" site they love pedo # over there. Also of course in various countries/times in history you had like 11 year old girls marrying adults and what not. So the pope obviously has a point that at times and in places it is accepted as normal too much. Though, the pope is still an idiot and hypocrit of course.

He's condemning it, by saying the world has become more accepting of it and they, the Church, can no longer be silent while the world continues to get worse.

I'm not remotely Catholic and I can understand what he's talking about.

Well said.

This rabid hunger to burn the witch before seeing the evidence is sadly becoming a frequent occurance on ATS

(not that i endorse the burning of anyone - even witch who are proven witches - it's just a metaphor!)

Have you ever read something wrong and took it to mean something else? I have.

Its called a mistake and if you claim to have never made a mistake that would be hypocritcal, though I would not call you moronic or stupid idiot or that you have done this on purpose to fit your agenda.

This thread has brought about some good discussion anyway even though the OP is wrong and the author admits he made a mistake on the first page,so no real point in getting all personal attacking is there.

The fact that he is more bothered with the reputation of the church than with the victims tells me enough.
"It has brought the church same"what about the victims you bastard?!

The article, as I read it, is very negative about the Pope -- as it should be. The Catholic Church bars gays from being full members of the Church. Yet, the majority of Priests are Gay, the Pope sure looks Gay. There is rampant abuse of Children by the Priests. I don't believe any of them have ever gone to Jail.

The word "StagNation" referrs to the "Vatican". The word "Stag" converts to the word "Fag". See the websites listed in my Profile. The ET Corn Gods language and game will bring the Church to its knees.

Remember when John Lennon said the Beatles were more famous than Christ? At that time I'd rather stay home and listen to "yeah, yeah, yeah" than go to church ... basically Lennon was right.

The pope says child porn is becoming more and more the norm! Look around you people, satan is loosed and having a ball! More and more evil is being excepted by people ... The pope isn't condoning child porn, come on!!

Satan knows he doesn't have much time ... we see his wrath upon the earth everyday!! Hello!!

Well done Mike, you beat me to it. Glad to see that someone else took the time to read the article and understood that far from condoning, he was strongly condemning and appears to be talking about how society in general had grown apathetic to the horrible crime of child abuse as recently as the 1970's.

As someone baptised a Catholic although lapsed for several years, I find some of the comments in this thread and many others on ATS extremely ignorant on the whole topic.

I'm European, both sides of my parental line are Catholic. I'd really like to know on how you get off on making such a ridiculous statement. But of course this is the internet where certain attention seeking D heads can talk about how they lie in a field every night watching swarms of alien ships (not UFOs, specifically aliens), label an entire continent as child abusers and of course have nothing to worry about due to their anonymity.

ATS, please bring back that ignore button.....

So, church law trumps the actual laws of a nation? I'm confused as to why actual crimes should be handled privately within the church. If my neighbor's wife gets murdered, can he just claim that his religion has placed him in charge of the investigation, and the cops should just leave them alone?

You are just trying to derail this aren't you? Just in case you haven't or won't read the full information GTORick has kindly provided, Church law isn't like Shariah law, it is the rules and regulations of the Church from an organisation point of view and it clearly states that where there is suspicion of any criminal activity (that's criminal activity according to the law of the land, not according to Church 'law'), then law enforcement agencies should be notified and that the Church will work with these agencies.

Look..for all of you Catholics crapping yourselves and metaphorically running around trying to do damage limitation...relax. It's not required.

The Pope is but a single man...a flawed, corrupt, nasty little man.

One man does not make the whole church, so it really is OK to be honest about a single man's failings, it does not mean your whole religion is invalid.

Defending this flawed, little creep, when it's obvious he is a flawed little dirtbag, is wrong though..on many levels.

Let's look at 'Benny's' history.

NAZI youth party member, glorifying and praising his god at the time..a certain Mr. Adolf Hitler.

Then as a highly placed Cardinal in Rome, during the 70's, he 'investigated' and subsequently whitewashed the suspicious death of Pope John Paul 1st, who many in the church suspected was quietly murdered, due to rumours he was about break the Catholic church's child sexual abuse scandals that was rocking the church in that time (and before, and after that time).

He has recently (widely known) been heavily implicated in the covering up (again) of myriad child sexual abuse cases, involving members of the clergy (male and female members) who in a position of trust, betrayed parents and children who placed their unconditional trust and faith in them to protect the children that had been entrusted to them, by raping and sexually molesting them.

'Benny' helped cover these allegation up.

And now we have Benny, using a form of psychology, to again centre on the subject of institutional sexual abuse, primarily by the Catholic church.

People may be taking what he said out of direct context, that's partly true, but the reason they are doing this, is because of the psychology being used. Mentioning that child sexual abuse is becoming very much an accepted aspect of human behaviour, even while simultaneously adding the codicil that it is not something he is either promoting of accepting of, places an air of acceptability around the subject.

It's a little like 'reverse psychology', but not quite. It's quite clever actually.

So, yes..Benny *is* a horrible, filthy dirty little man. A flawed human being, among many other flawed human beings. But he is *just* one man...the Pope may be the spiritual head of the Catholic faith, but he *certainly* is not 'the church'.

Boot the creep out and get someone to head up your religion that actually is fit for the post next time eh?

Yes, criminal law does apply..

But don't forget though, that Vatican City is a sovereign state, with it's own laws, and it's own police force etc.

Criminality won't come into it, as Vatican City is effectively it's own country.

It would be like taking a poor East Asian country to court, for allowing kids as young as 7 years old to marry, simply to get the wedding dowery money...which is quite 'normal' for a lot of these poor, third world places.

It's not going to happen.

This is so irresponsible, using material CLEARLY taken out of context to gain some consensus on Catholic and Vatican bashing and hate mongering...

Absolutely pathetic material for a thread...

The fact that some people have tried to "elevate" the level to discuss about the Vatican and, as someone else said in this thread "that creepy little man", speaks volumes about the garbage that can be found on ATS...

Simply shameful...

a couple hundred years ago, it was completely normal for 13 year old girls to be married and have children. Today thats considered pedophilia.

It was NOT.

Go look at records about marriages. Anywhere, for the last thousand years that you can dig up.

The ages of marriage for females is consistently over 16, and closer to 21. Males tend to be consistently over 21 to 30 for first marriages.

I know that this "fact" is very popular right now - however, it isn't a fact at all.

Erm some USA Rock and Roll star married a 14 year old in the 1950s, was it Little Richard? Elvis dated Precilla when she was underage.

No, that statement is misleading. It's the enforcement agencies within the country/region where the suspected activity took place, your statement taken to its logical conclusion would imply American state law is only applicable in Washington.
