Spain votes for tough smoking ban

www.bbc.co.uk

Spanish lawmakers have voted to approve a tough new anti-smoking law, meaning that from 2 January, bars and restaurants will be no-smoking zones.

Smokers will also not be allowed to light up on television broadcasts, near hospitals or in school playgrounds.

The bill, proposed by PM Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and his governing Socialist Party, was passed in the lower house by 189 votes to 154.

Bar and cafe owners fear the law will adversely affect business.

I think we have all see tobacco use being slowly removed from society for many years now. This law in Spain is just the latest hammer to come down. Tobacco is a very large industry, with billions to work with. In has been a long time in the making with the corporations fighting every step of the way. But I think it will happen completely sooner or later.

They already have a smoking ban in Greece and I can tell you that when I was there this summer it was 100% ignored apart from in some of the places in the cities.

I'm of the personal opinion that it's silly to ban smoking in a bar. It's a bar; it's main purpose is for you to partake of harmful substances. Banning smoking in it seems kind of silly given this.

Human slaves are NOT ALLOWED to pause, reflect and meditate upon thoughts which are considered dangerous to Big Brother watching you.

Smoking is one of such breech, therefore smoking must be banned. Other such 'thought' breeches will be dealt with in time insidiously with manipulated 'scientific' data. Humanity are such stupid wozzies easily addicted with blue pills and trinklets

There is NO NEED to think anymore. Big Brother had thought it all out for you. Just follow and do as instructed. Everything needed to be 'thought' had already already been written out by Big Brother through the compliant MSM and education system, when faced with any obstacle or problems.

By Order
Big Brother

Yet another example of the EU meddling in national affairs. I know this cause the greek government officially stated THEY MUST BAN SMOKING in all public places and they have no choice in the matter. The weird part is that hotels and bars were given a one year grace period to adapt smoke filters with an exhaust system on the roof. Not only that but store owners had to install A GLASS SHIELD to partition the space into smoking and non-smoking areas.

Extremely silly nonsense since the owners had to spend a fortune of their profit to keep the smoking clientelle happy and then our government turns around A YEAR LATER and says no smoking..period...meaning all the money went to a lost cause!

Then add the MAKE BELIEVE financial BANKER "crisis" and you got a recipe for DISASTER. In fact the world bank has sent its cronies here since last year and they tell "do this or your out of the EU" constantly..what BS and people put up with it...

Thanks to everyone for posting.

As to the reason why this is happening I can throw my two cents in now. Yes it is big brother watching but there is more to it then to just watch or to control the sheeple. Tobacco causes many dieses that over time kill. With the government taking a greater role in health care, that means they will also take a greater role in the way you take care of your self. Not just tobacco, trans fats have been banned in some states also if I remember right.

EVERYTHING, manmade or natural in our environment kills.

Let's BANNED everything. It will save on health care. Ban cars, factories, cellphones, computers, aircrafts, ships, etc, etc. Go back to the jungles, and then kill the animals, kill insects, kill plants, etc, etc.

BAN BAN BAN, KILL KILL KILL!!!!

Heil to the new Nazification of our world!!

Seeker
your point is well taken also be it when we look at tobacco it is much simpler to put a cost on the treatment for the effects of tobacco use. That is why it will be out of society sooner or later.

If I may interject some common sense here....

Tobacco CAN BE dangerous to certain individuals OVER A COURSE OF TIME, however what about liquor, sugar, soft drinks, chocolate bars and just about anything else mildely-to-moderate dangerous? Why not ban those too?

Narcotics have been outlawed for decades in almost all countries, except the netherlands, YET they still find their way into the economy and people pay expensive prices to use them...meaning they pay to ruin their life. If the governement(any government) was sincere don't you think they would stop the importation/exportation of illegal substances at the point of entry? Its common knowledge that customs only search 5%-10% of all containers yet at the airport your given absolute hell. I am not talking just about the TSA which is an american agency, in europe you have to go through similar searches. Whats the point of HARRASSING airline customers if they don't care to solve the problem?!

Tobacco is no where near as dangerous as narcotics so why ban it? And to take it a step forward why the hell does the government tell business owners to install special filters, exhaust sytem, glass shields IF THEY PLAN TO BAN ALL SMOKING WITHIN A YEAR? They are showing CONTEMPT not only for the smokers but your average business people trying to survive in A CHOKING ECONOMY!!! One would hope that the people ELECTED to represent us would care enough to think straight and not play THESE STUPID GAMES which help no one but the elite.

And don't tell me anything about public healthcare. Its wasteful to the point of bankruptcy, not just in greece but in many, many countries. Our "elected" leaders don't care about anything public...thats for sure...they want to privitise the hospitals/clinics just like everything else under government supervision. Its not a case of incompetance...its more a case of treason!

About 5 years ago they passed a law here in Spain that made it obligatory for all public places such as restaurants, bars, disco etc to have a smokers zone which had to be closed in and hermetically sealed with air conditioning.
Many bars and restaurants paid upto 100,000 euros to have this bulding work done. They gave you two options, no smoking or smoking with sealed zone...so many paid for building work, under the fear of loosing customers.

Now they're banning it all together who will compensate the business who paid thousands for something that now they dont need to have??
