There were 3 Quakes (changed by now) after the Big One,they added 3 new ones already. I would trust EMSC over USGS any Day ,because USGS downgrades and adds or removes Quakes all the Time.

Edit: just refreshed USGS,they are adding them now...slowpokes

No idea! It seems to be on land although as it changes magnitude it is moving around.

If it could cause a tsunami I would have thought that the wave would be going away from the coast not towards it like those wave machines at swimming pools.

Do you still think this was an Aftershock of the 9.0?

Yeah, that's what I am saying. If it was under land, I can't see how it could create an incoming wave that apparently did hit the shore. Something ain't right. That's for darn sure.

As far as I can see yes as the levels of seismicity have not return to normal before the big one as this graph shows.

Sorry, have to disagree with you on the Point that this was an Aftershock...

And another one just hit...again,on the same Spot (This makes 7 Aftershocks in the Location of the Big "Aftershock" )

Very weird, GE is not showing any of those and the 6.6 is still showing 7.1

I have no idea. It would need a seismologist to determine that. In accordance with the accepted definition they are still aftershocks. If a seismologist says they are aftershocks of the 6.6 or 7.1 or whatever it is then that's fine.

Incidentally why could they not be aftershocks to an aftershock?

Actually, after looking this, I think you might be correct:

www.jma.go.jp...

This could be a new source mechanism, because of the sheer frequency, amount and location of new aftershocks of this "aftershock".

And I will further qualify this: activity at MAJO has definitely picked up in GEE, and is behaving similarly to a mainshock/aftershock sequence.

Not quite sure what that JMA site is saying. I guess it depends on the definition you use for an aftershock. If they are using their intensity scale as a guide then that has nothing to do with magnitude so you can throw the definition of of the window.

At the end of the day what does it matter? They are earthquakes. Whether they are foreshocks or aftershocks or afternoon shocks is actually fairly irrelevant in the great scheme of things.

As i said

Incidentally why could they not be aftershocks to an aftershock?

That does not make the 6.6 NOT an aftershock of the 9.0 which was the original question.

Not sure a seismologist would see it that way. If this is a new source mechanism that has activated, I am sure it will be identified and studied as such in relation to the Japan Trench. I can't see how the discovery of a potentially new extension of an existing fault is irrelevant. It is very relevant.

And as we speak, MAJO continues twitching with small quakes. And before you say "Are you SURE those are small quakes?"

Yep. They are registering at G.INU as well, just far enough away to provide confirmation and ruling out man made activity.

Thought I'd let you guys, know that the 7.1 M or 6.6 M quake in Japan seems to have coincided with a CME that supposedly arrived on earth today...

Check thread for more details: www.abovetopsecret.com...

I'm no expert in this but, just wanted know if CME's maybe a cause in this increased EQ worldwide, since the Sun itself is active lately???

Obviously a humour failure has occurred on my part.

It does not matter in the sense that there are more important things in life than fault systems in a country far away when there are family matters to attend to. My apologies. That area became active in 1964

Yeah thanks for digging that up. So then this could be a new reactivation of a previously known fault? Or? What exactly are you saying...?

By the way, since II.ERM has come back online, most of these smaller ones are registering there too. They definitely seem to be quakes. And most are centered right around that same area of the "6.6". Man what a cluster****. So if this is true now we have aftershocks from a main shock that was an aftershock of a bigger main shock.

And I am really getting sick of trying to figure out what the magnitude is when you have ten different sources saying different things.

Solution: we invent and adopt the new ATS magnitude, Mats. We take all sources, average the magnitude, and that's what it becomes. The end.

Maybe there is a new Volcano forming? Would explain those weird Quakes all roughly in the same Spot...Magma coming up...

Example:

I don't know if the lack of detail before 1963 is because there is none, or because there was no recording before that so I am not sure if this is simply a continuation of older business or not - probably is. It seems odd to have started up with a high 4 however.

This is right close by but I don't think there is anything significant about it, as is this one but a bit further away and is/was a shield volcano.

MATS it is then, as long as we don't take that average of the USGS phase data. Way to many variants.

Is there a formula for converting to Mw otherwise my catalogues are all going to be out!!
