I was wondering because my alert in my own program is normally faster than eQuake - and I don't need the browser open to get the alert. If the browser is open eQuake is usually a minute of so behind.

I see I have some serious competition in the graphs department.

Yes I was using EMSC data which i think only goes down to 2.0 - which for most purposes is large enough.

There appears to be some bumps on the majority of the PNSN webis at the 2:16 mark. Can anyone pinpoint what the source of that was?

Hi westcoast, I have studied the seismo long and hard and have come to the conclusion that this one is definitely exhibiting all the signs of the passage of a herd - quite a large one - of Haggis Americanus Sinister (The left footed American haggis). You can see below the pointers to this.

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/66499edb2941.png[/atsimg]

Note the trace goes up from left to right fairly steeply in places? This is where the herd does a skid turn en masse which produces a high frequency crescendo.

You can also see a gap in the trace at the bottom. It stops for some time and was just re-starting as I looked at the trace. Undoubtedly the reason for this is that the herd took off like a flock of starlings - they are mighty jumpers - and had just floated back to ground again.

The trace just threw a wobbly as I was watching

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/19eef803b00b.png[/atsimg]

This is probably the first signs of the Vanuatu 6.9 appearing.

If it is not Haggis Sinister then it is possibly wind although not quite like the pattern I would expect. Snow perhaps - the very heavy king that produces earthquakes? Due to it's regularity I don't think it is anything significant - i.e.HT as that would be a different signature. I may try and have a listen later. It certainly is not Haggis Alba Dexter the Scottish Haggis (right footed) that is for sure.

PS It is 11 am and I have NOT been drinking!

Yes, Vanuatu. If you look at the arrival times here you will see Washington is 10:16 (BTW try not to talk PST - always think in UTC)

@westcoast - sorry I was not thinking - that wobble is not Vanuatu as that is the red squiggle about. Have to wait and see what that wobble does. Cedar Flats looks more like wind, as does TDH with a big telemetry blip just before the Vanuatu quake appears. This telemetry thing is odd as it appears on several of the records at different times so maybe it is some sort of calibration signal? Normally they just spike up or down once or twice, but then again maybe they are all different.

Going back to the wobbly on SHUK for a moment. This is the signal on the EHZ channel which looks much the same.

SHUK.UW..BHZ.2011.009

This signature is normally what you get from a Pacific 'bump' on these recorders - and that is what it looks like on the SHZ channel as well. But this does not show on any of the other SHZ channels - not one single one!

To give you an example this is Raoul in the Kermedecs and you can see that long wobbly signature as the S wave hits.

RAO.IU.10.BHZ.2011.009

I am just wondering if the sensitivity of SHUK is turned right up and that is why the 'normal' trace is so noisy?

Edit to say: Actually here is a better example of how a Pacific bump shows far away. This one is in Greenland.

ANGG.DK..BHZ.2011.009

PuterMan...could you keep an Eye on Europe for something unusual please? If something like Cracking an Eggshell turns out to be true,we could get more Activity here. Especially all those "little" Quakes in Czech,Poland,France and Switzerland the last 2 or 3 Days has me little worried.

Thanks for looking,

I'm not sure where on shuksan that station is at, but it is a beautiful, very steep rocky mountain. As to the herd...if anything were to be up there it would be most likely Elk. Good thought...although, again depeding on where the seismo is, there could be a whole lota snow on it right now.

Wierd waves. They DO look like S waves. SHUK wasn't working for a long time, so maybe there are still some bugs? Except for that some of the stuff I'm seeing on it also shows up on the nearest Baker seismo. Hmmm...I'll have to watch it for awhile and look for any patterns.

As to weather, it had been dry and sunny for the most part of last week, but today FINALLY started snowing. I'm excited because it's the first real snowfall we have had this year. Might get a lot!!

You inspired me to get into it

I have had Office 7 Excel for a year now, it takes a bit of getting used to, there are so many templates to choose from, I just figured out how to change the text on the axis', that was a problem for me for a while. I never read the instructions, just try things out.

I like the Iceland time/mag graphs and the Turkey one is quite good too under the map, showing the depth in relation to the map longitudes, just started doing that on my NZ Blog too, done the last 4 days

heres a couple of examples of my versions for New Zealand

I think it helps get a better overall picture, when combined with the maps showing locations
seabreeze.wordpress.com...

I'm running a continuous time/mag graph as well, joining up the daily time/mag graphs.
I had some issues doing it in .png format, the colours faded every time I opened the image to add a new day, seem to have sorted that out by working in .bmp then saving to .png before loading to the host.
I did 3 months worth on one image Oct-Dec 2010 but the image was too big, and 2MB size, so have broken it down to 5 day strips now.

seabreeze.wordpress.com...

I started a graph on Sept, and the Darfield Chch quake aftershocks after the 3rd the graph is saturated above Mag3

Yes I have had a magnitude/depth menu item in my program for over a year now and just not got round to doing anything with it. One of the reasons is that the 'freebie' graph is that sophisticated and I am more used to plotting things in Excel or Excel type programs. I suppose now I have competition I had better get on with it! Nothing like a bit of competition to spur one on!

Nice scatter graphs next?

I always have one eye on Europe, after all we are on the edge of it!

Things do seem a little lively - especially in Switzerland recently. I have seen a number of Swiss quakes on my list that pops up and I don't normally. Usually it is Greece and Turkey mainly.

Ok,thanks. Again with the "Cracking an Eggshell" - Theory, could be this New Faultline expanding from the UK down to the Med. Zone. Would explain this Quakes inbetween in France and Switzerland. Maybe worth looking into.

Yeah
, most of the networks maps show depth as a priority with their colour coded plots, whereas I have always concentrated on magnitude.
You can see why although we have had a Mag 4 every day bar one this year (9 days) that the reason they are not reported as felt is the depth. It seems to take a Mag5 for folks to feel the deep ones, regardless of what region they are in, Taranaki, Waikato get a lot, some in Bay of Plenty.
The Christchurch quakes all very shallow, you can see them all clumped around >30km at Lat 172-173

Quite a few deep ones today, 9/21 were deeper than 80km
