Thank you very much for the info. Getting closer to me. It seems like the New Madrid is becoming more unsettled, all starting with Arkansas.

CrazyDaisy:
I know exactly how you are feeling. I, along with everyone I know and love live here. I cant imagine having to go through what Susan and the rest of the people in Arkansas are going through. Just waiting and watching on pins and needles...

Well, as is often the case (90% of the time) there were no "forshocks" as such to the 5.4 NW of Tokomaru Bay
New 7 day GIF up to end 25th NZ quakes

There was an aftershock though

REF:3485335
LAT/LONG: -38.07673, 178.20236
UTC: 2011/3/25 8:48:16
NZDT: 2011/3/25 13:48:16
DEPTH: 56km MAG: 3.35ML
LOCATION: NW of Tokomaru Bay, East Cape
SERIES: Tokomaru Aftershock
Reported as Felt: No

source

II'm going to do one for japan, expect it will take a while, probably be more than 1MB, end of the month our ISP has reverted us to almost Diallup speed due to a cap on useage (reminds me of the 1970's an petrol rationing
)
edit on 26-3-2011 by muzzy because: if the source posted has the original source in there then there is no need to duplicate , I mean where do you stop? find out the persons name who works for Geonet who found the epi-center, and the person who wrote up the details etc, this is just rediculous

Muzzy thanks for posting your "new toy" quake map of NZ, and other NZ info. I'm in the North Island - supposedly in a quake-free zone, although there are faults deep below here i understand. Looking at the usgs world map each day, I'm seeing more and more decent-sized quakes from Fiji - south. I'm wondering if these are happening along the Kermadec trench? Do you envision these quakes moving southwards to NZ as time goes on, or are they just an adjustment after Japan?

That whole north east section of the Australan Plate from NZ north right around the top edge at Samoa and back west to Vanuatu is always pretty active, but it does seem to go in spurts.
I honestly don't think anything down this far is affected by what happened at Japan, in fact I'd say its the other way around. That Japan quake is likely due to spreading of the Pacific Plate, which expands in all directions.
I think you have to look at the bigger picture though, over many years and across at least half the globe to see the interaction of the tectonic plates with each other.

Now I've had a practice run with NZ and the Japan aftershocks, the next step is what I really wanted to do, the Global World Maps, which I already have made. I'm thinking to do them in 10 year periods, rather than the whole 100 years, because
1. the single 100year GIF would be massive MB
2. by the time you get to 50 years you've probably already forgotten the first couple of decades.

Its a work in progress, just like the planet Earth is

3.x miles in depth! wow. They are saying on TV a tsunami warning is in effect..

That would be REALLY bad, even if the waves were 2-5 feet, because it would push all that radiation covered water onto land... Hope there isn't one..

As soon as I heard about the tsunami following this quake I thought of the radiaition it could spread. This just gets worse every day. Also, that was a very significant quake that could have also done some damage.

Looks like it is downgraded to a 6.1 and changed to 17.1km depth, but EMSC still had it at 6.5 at 6km depth last time I looked. USGS is using this weird Mi scale that I can't find anything about and EMSC are using Mb.

Shake map does not look bad

Someone posted earlier today from memphis, wondering if there was any quake activity near by.

Apparently a relative in a n.e. suburb of the city reported his house was shaking earlier today.

Can anyone confirm this, as I have not learned the ins and outs of GEE.

I am also in memphis but did not feel anything.

Puterman, that is an insane amount of instruments you posted on the previous page! - Not that I am complaining, but it makes me wonder why so many.

and

Today’s Earthquake Fact
The largest recorded earthquake in the United States was a magnitude 9.2 that struck Prince William Sound, Alaska on Good Friday, March 28, 1964 UTC.

I have one of those dreaded headaches again today!!!
